A European Tour In June the Woodward Choral Department traveled to Germany and the Czech Republic with a group of 45 students and teachers In Berlin the singers visited the Brandenburg Gate a symbol of Germany s division and reunification On the way to Leipzig the group stopped by Wittenberg to visit the home of Martin Luther The singers performed in the Castle Church where Martin Luther nailed the famous 95 Theses to the door In Leipzig home to Mendelsohn Schumann and Bach singers visited Thomaskirche where Bach served for 27 years as choirmaster In Dresden the choir visited the Zwinger Castle and saw the Dresden Opera House Finally in Prague the singers went on a walking tour of the Hradcany Castle and crossed the 14th century Charles Bridge The Woodward singers enjoyed the checkerboard streets of medieval Prague and ended their tour with a dinner cruise on the Vltava River While in Europe the choir performed three full concerts Over the summer I took a course at Emory University on abnormal psychology and development I also volunteered at the Emory Autism Clinic These experiences have provided me with greater insight in understanding autism and how I can improve the way I work with children at Chastain After seeing the tremendous progress of children with autism in equine therapy I was inspired to find a way to provide access to this potentially lifechanging therapy I collected money from a letter writing campaign and received a grant from the Door and Ladder Society a philanthropy group for Jewish teens I was able to fund a series of 10 equine therapy sessions for more than 20 children a project that became known as the Isenstein Initiative Also during the summer I worked at a camp with an inclusion program for children with autism I was able to help select students from the inclusion program to receive scholarships from the Isenstein Initiative and I have already begun working with several of them This experience has shown me that I truly can make a difference in the lives of others Travel to China Chinese language students along with teacher Betty Bienert and some parents visited China over the summer traveling to Beijing Xi an Shanghai and Hong Kong It was an unforgettable experience for everyone The students not only used what they learned in class with Chinese locals they also learned Chinese history and culture through the many historical sites they visited Mrs Bienert said The students often talk about the fond memories from the trip and many say that they want to return to China In addition Woodward welcomed an exchange student from China in August through the ASSIST program which brings outstanding international students to attend the finest American independent schools for a year 360 continues on next page Go to 360 Headlines at www woodward edu for more recent news FALL 2011 7

Why Woodward By Nija Meyer Parent of Woodward North students Why Woodward It s the question I hear every day asked by neighbors who have chosen to attend public school by newcomers exploring private school options by the random person who sees the sticker on my car in the grocery store parking lot and most recently by friends who are struggling with the decision of whether to continue from Woodward North to Main Campus in seventh grade Believe it or not my Why Woodward decision was made more than 40 years ago when my parents and I emigrated to the United States from India In my family of scholars academics reigned supreme but it was forever at tension with the Gandhian equality for everyone mindset My parents wanted the best school for me but their perception of private schools was tainted by labels of privileged and elitist They consequently sent me to what was then ranked the best public school in Georgia Did I do well Sure I learned how to excel at standardized testing I learned how to memorize exactly what the teacher wanted to hear so I could get good grades I learned how to work the system Is that what I want for my children No When it came time for our children to go to school my husband and I prepared a shopping list with all our desired attributes It went something like this n Academic excellence without being an academic pressure cooker Nija and Joe Meyer with their children Hans and Arya n Diversity of race religion and ethnicity after all that s the world n Well rounded education not just in core subjects but in the arts and athletics n Cultivation of compassion and character guided by moral values n A school from which our children would emerge as happy well balanced individuals ready to make positive contributions to the world Our list reminded me of the scene in Mary Poppins in which the children write down their criteria for the perfect nanny then Mary Poppins arrives and fits their description to a tee At the risk of sounding corny that is precisely what Woodward Academy did for us Our Mary Poppins had arrived Jumping ahead my son has now been at Woodward North for seven years and my daughter for five years As my husband and I look back on these years we find that WN has not only met but surpassed our already high expectations We all hear our school praised for its diversity sense of family emphasis on the whole child and strong value system but can phrases such as these even begin to capture the full Woodward experience If excellence is in the details then just what are the details that make our school truly exceptional Here are some of those details I love that our WN principal Mr Lee Vincent personally greets each child by name every Why Woodward continued on next page www woodward edu FALL 2011 9

Why Woodward continued from page 9 morning I love how all our teachers even those who have never taught my children look out for their best interests just like members of an extended family I love how they have fueled the joy for learning in meaningful and memorable ways whether it is mining for gold in Dahlonega after studying geology visiting the Atlanta Botanical Garden after studying botany or role playing the life of a pilgrim I love that my children appreciate Eid Yom Kippur Diwali Nowruz and the Chinese New Year and are invited by their friends to participate in these celebrations I love how our children have been given so many opportunities to perform that they can stand up confidently in front of an audience of more than 300 people with nothing more than what my son calls the good kind of butterflies Our students are not afraid to put themselves out there and they learn to take both wins and losses in stride I love that even though there is no homework on weekends my 8 year old and 10 year old look ahead on their own to see what is coming so they can minimize their workload during the hectic week I love that my children s friends and their parents have all become what we call our family of friends bound together by similar values and priorities Experiences like these don t just happen It is impossible for me to put a price tag on them but I do know that when prospective parents ask me Is the difference worth the dollars I can unhesitatingly answer yes Now for the next difficult question Is the difference worth the distance Every year I see the parental angst that begins to creep in 10 WOODWARD ACADEMY starting in fourth grade as children approach the Middle School years Interestingly enough students have a different perspective viewing the commute to Main Campus as an opportunity to catch up on sleep socialize with their friends listen to music and get ahead on homework except on Fridays when everyone is ready to start the weekend In a recent session with middle schoolers the overwhelming majority felt that the ride was worth it because of all the things they love about Main Campus Over the years I have become more involved in a volunteer capacity at Main Campus Every time I m there I get the same feeling goose bumps Fascinated inspired excited goose bumps that come from the realization that our wonderful experiences at WN were just a tiny sneak preview of what is in store for our children in the years ahead including opportunities to take a myriad of AP courses and electives such as robotics oceanography and environmental science work in collaboration with Emory and Georgia Tech professors on leading edge research explore painting drawing sculpture and photography perform in plays and musicals of such high quality that you can visualize our young stars on Broadway and engage in community service that is about active participation not just parents writing a check Woodward offers a customized curriculum personally tailored to bring out the strengths in each individual with no cookie cutter definition for success Can other schools offer this experience I will answer by saying that each school has its strong suits but I believe that Woodward s strong suit is that it is strong in all the suits It offers the total package the whole shebang Our rich diversity is not only in demographics but in learning styles vistas viewpoints and visions truly preparing our students for the real world Our students don t just talk about accountability and responsibility they live it from the earliest grades and on through college Am I willing to go the distance literally and figuratively for my children to have these opportunities and experiences Again my answer is unhesitatingly yes As I walk across Main Campus and see our Woodward students changing buildings for classes using breaks to catch up on work laughing with friends and looking confident and relaxed I have no doubt that these young men and women will not just succeed in college they will be happy well balanced individuals ready to make positive contributions to the world My husband and I couldn t ask for more for our children

www woodward edu alumni ALUMNI REFLECTIONS Remembering Our Years as Boarding Parents By Carolyn Haldeman Every family has its stories The close proximity in which we lived as dorm parents at Woodward from 1972 to 1983 provided lasting memories of a sometimes dysfunctional but almost always fun certainly close family My husband John and I moved into the dorm apartment vacated by long time Woodward faculty members Judy and Sammy Andrews When our children were born in 1973 1976 and 1979 we were fortunate to employ the nanny who had looked after The Haldeman children grew up on a campus with the children of other Kimberly Andrews Brown 83 and Lee Andrews faculty members who were also dorm parents Many of the children also became Woodward alumni Pictured here are Katherine Reed 87 Mrs Maggie Harper was a formidable lady Fuller 98 Claire Carpenter Jack Haldeman 97 Nicolas Reed 98 and our son Jack was probably among her more Stephen Cobb 96 and Mary Haldeman 95 challenging charges When John and I made evening checks in the Weltner and Evans dorms Jack would sometimes get away from his sisters Once we had returned from our rounds and hadn t even realized Jack was missing when a plainclothes detective rang our back doorbell He had smiling diapered Jack in the crook of his arm Our daughters Elizabeth and Mary were standing behind me and several of the girls in Weltner next door were looking out the windows to check out what was happening The detective not realizing that we were in a dorm said Lady how many children do you have in there The boarders were our adolescent children They often came from small Georgia counties that couldn t offer the kind of education that Woodward offered Some came from overseas such as the children of the pilot of the Shah of Iran One was a President s daughter When Amy Carter 85 first came to look at Woodward her parents and an entourage of Secret Service accompanied her Dr Betsy Box the first to head up our Transition Program had invited all boarders to her log cabin on Walker Avenue for a Christmas party It was a bit disconcerting to see big men in overcoats stationed behind trees in her woodsy front yard The next year when Amy was a boarder she asked her parents to release her Secret Service detail for her 16th birthday which they did The day the men left John and I saw Amy at the bus stop She said she was going to Junkman s Daughter in Little Five Points to shop and would be back for supper as indeed she was free at last At least two long marriages received their catalysts from dorm friendships Allison Taylor 76 a boarder in Evans for whom I named my second daughter married boarder Paul Turk 76 Elizabeth Peacock 73 and Alan Brandes 73 fell in love sharing meaningful glances and an English textbook in my classroom Elizabeth the daughter of a Baptist minister and Alan who led the Jewish services for boarders have merged both family traditions enabling their children to enjoy twice as many holidays The Turks have traveled with their three children all over the world still remembering this AP English teacher and sending photos with their Christmas cards It s always a pleasure to hear from a former student but it is a special gift to hear from students who for a time called Woodward home Mrs Haldeman is a beloved member of the Upper School English faculty who has taught generations of Woodward students since joining the faculty in 1971 Her children Elizabeth Wynn Haldeman Flesher 91 Mary Allison Haldeman 95 and Jack Haldeman 97 grew up on campus FALL 2011 23
