C ommunities are built on connections I often stop and watch in awe and wonder at what I call our every day miracle as more than 3 000 people gather on our campuses daily to create Woodward brought together from many different directions by common tasks and common values If we connect together every day in this way we also connect over time with thousands before us We recently celebrated our connections over time through memory tradition and gratitude at Homecoming Reunion weekend Even though there is much that is different from the Woodward of 20 years ago and the GMA of 50 years ago we could easily trace the lineage that allowed us to evolve to this point each step taken with the ever present commitment that children should thrive and grow In recent years we have entered a whole new realm of connectedness in which the pathways built of asphalt copper and even memories are taking a back seat to the fantastic world of Internet communication Woodward has entered that world I think with thoughtful enthusiasm The new communications technologies have given us a world of e mail Edline SmartBoards e newsletters online applications and the like which ideally only enhance communication without replacing human contact That is the caution required to be thoughtful users of the new technology This has all emerged so rapidly over 15 years that it is hard to believe we are entering yet another realm of possibility for connectedness This new world dubbed Web 2 0 creates a world where we do not simply communicate back and forth Web 1 0 but create communities This is the world of blogs for continuing debate and discussion wiki sites for creation of an online encyclopedia through joint effort Skype telephony and videoconferencing at no cost social networking communities and so on We have the capacity for the Woodward community already vast in its local incarnation and rich in its international connections to other schools to connect and interact worldwide to truly offer our students classrooms without walls And in establishing these connections we will also look locally for our links to the wider world through our many family connections to the international business and not for pro t community that has come to Atlanta and Woodward As with the earlier technologies we will proceed not according to a preordained plan but according to where our abiding interest in the best possible environment for our students takes us We will acquire the skills to begin the journey and see where it leads All the best Dr Harry C Payne President Woodward Academy FA L L W I N T E R 2 0 0 7 1
Left to right Marguerite Nunnally George Dietz Spike Dietz 01 and Rachel Trau 07 BRINGING BOOKS TO CHILDREN WOODWARD HELPS BUILD LIBRARY IN ZAMBIA There is a library in Africa named for Woodward Academy The Woodward Academy Library at Terranova School is the latest result of an ongoing relationship between the two schools The Terranova School is located at the Terranova Estate a coffee plantation in the upper Kaleya Valley of Zambia Eight years ago plantation owner Colin Street opened the school for children of workers The school started with grade one each year a grade has been added Now the Terranova School is open to all children in the area and educates about 300 students in grades one through eight The school is planning to add grade nine Woodward s effort to build a library for Terranova began last year when former Middle School teacher Marguerite Nunnally got the idea from a letter written by a Terranova student She and George Dietz Assistant Principal and science teacher contacted Mr Street 2 who said a library could be built for about 7 500 We were amazed at how cheaply a library could be built in Zambia so we presented the project to our students Mr Dietz said Students at the Middle School and all across the Academy embraced the project and raised construction funds as well as money to buy books and ship them to Africa Over the summer a Woodward delegation including Mrs Nunnally Mr Dietz his son Spike 01 and Rachel Trau 07 visited Terranova to celebrate the opening of the new library Carmen Martinez the U S Ambassador to Zambia was present for the event as were Terranova students and their parents whose sweat equity helped build the library Education has a profound impact on improving prospects for a better life in Zambia where typical workers earn the equivalent of about 1 per day according to Mr Dietz Many are subsistence farmers with little or no education Public schools are unavailable to many children there or if available often poor in quality At the Terranova School conditions for learning were excellent for Zambia but Spartan compared to Woodward said Mr Dietz Still the children were friendly and eager to see us All wanted to shake hands be photographed and then see their pictures on the cameras They were very shy at rst but gifts of candy pencils and balloons soon had everyone smiling The Woodward group spent eight days in Africa much of that time at Terranova getting to know the students and their families Mr Dietz said the group came away feeling that the Academy s ongoing support of the Terranova School makes an enormous impact and that building the library was an important step It s less important to redistribute wealth than to redistribute opportunity Mr Dietz said It will take a long time for Zambia to catch up to the ACADEMY MAGAZINE
It s less important to redistribute wealth than to redistribute opportunity U S Ambassador Carmen Martinez rest of the world but the kids at the Terranova School are most certainly better off than they were this time last year They all know that the way to a better life is with an education One of the bene ts of a better education is better living conditions and a chance to beat the odds of a life expectancy of 37 years The Woodward Terranova relationship helps the Zambian students but also provides rewarding experience for the Woodward community Teachers like Mrs Nunnally and Mr Dietz bring their experiences visiting Africa to the Academy s classrooms And Woodward students get to know their contemporaries in Africa through letters and photos broadening their understanding of the world We intend to continue our relationship with Terranova said Headmaster Ron McCollum Plans are under way to provide computers and the Upper School is engaging in a uniform clothing drive for FA L L W I N T E R 2 0 0 7 the students We re also exploring the idea of cooperative learning projects between Woodward and Terranova via Web 2 0 platforms and we re exploring the idea of sending small groups of students to Terranova and perhaps hosting a Terranova contingent on our campus in the future WOODWARD AND TERRANOVA A BRIEF HISTORY 2004 2005 It began with Lexi Street a former Woodward teacher and daughter in law of Terranova Estate owner Colin Street Mrs Street galvanized the Woodward community on behalf of the Terranova School Students collected books computers and clothing and raised money to ship them to Africa This began a tradition in which Terranova students wear Woodward clothing on Woodward Wednesdays In the summer of 2005 Mrs Street brought along two Woodward teachers Iona Wynter and Carrie Edmison on a visit to Terranova 2005 2006 Former Middle School teacher Marguerite Nunnally organized a Christmas season effort to ship more than 500 pounds of books and supplies to Terranova after she learned of the need for expanding the curriculum in middle school math Woodward Middle School students and their parents raised the funds required for shipping in little more than a week s time 2006 2007 The focus during this school year was on building the Woodward Academy Library at the Terranova School Woodward students and teachers embraced the project and eventually raised 7 500 for construction as well as almost 9 000 to buy books and pay for shipping them to Zambia 2007 2008 This year George Dietz and Lee Conner Director of IT for the Academy are working together on a plan to supply computers for the library at the Terranova School The plans include sending a team to Zambia in July 2008 to set up 16 computers along with high speed Internet and web cameras that would allow Terranova students and teachers to interact with Woodward teachers and students in real time In addition the Upper School is conducting a uniform clothing drive for Terranova students 3
