Hence, this building is a Design and Cultural center that retains and interacts with the existing heritage facade of an old governate building on the site, while providing a space for the people of Baghdad to interact, discuss and design new buildings for the city. The building uses silos to form circular introverted spaces that aid in social interaction among the users. _SITE PLANThe building site sits on the famous historic center of Baghdad, Al-Rusafa, with many historic buildings on one side and typical residential blocks with courtyards on the other side. These historic buildings either have ‘Domes’ or ‘Minarets’ and huge entrance arches as an important architectural element in the surrounding neighborhood. Therefore we can see a ‘juxtaposition of circles inside quadrilaterals’ in the plans of neighboring context._AIMAs mentioned earlier, the proposed Design and Cultural Center retain the old broken facade on the site to celebrate the heritage of Baghdad. This site has no order and is an abstract shape in plan. The new built form aims to create interactive internal spaces for the designers to come and work together, while also having an interaction with the existing walls. This could be achieved by introducing several smaller circular spaces within the boundary of the existing facade. These circular spaces turned out to relate to a similar architectural pattern as existing in the context. _SITE DESCRIPTIONThe period following 2003 has been one of the most challenging periods of Baghdad. In the last 15 years, Iraq has lost more than 50 percent of its historic buildings. The site of the proposed Design and Cultural Center is located on the very famous Al-Rusafa, known to be one of the main historic center of Baghdad. Currently, the broken facade of a Heritage governate building sits on the site, which is the remains post the looting and vandalism in the week that followed the US invasion of Iraq in 2003.MASTER’S PROJECTARCHITECTURE12

Circular spaces achieving increased interaction with the existing facade, avoiding isolated corners and giving more importance to the existing corners of the old facade.Giving verticality to the circular spaces forms multiple “silos” providing more usable floor area at higher levels.The verticality that comes with the silos forms introverted along with interactive space that encourages truly a communal learning experience.Streamlined movement achieving maximum contact with the existing facade.Juxtaposing ‘circular spaces over linear spaces’, ‘vertical forms over horizontal form’ and ‘new structure over old’. Introverted, enclosed spaces providing a concentrated social atmosphere for the designers.Voids are created through the volumes to bring in daylight to the interior spaces. Cutouts punched through the volumes of the silos to form interesting spaces as well as give openness to the building.Circular spaces providing continuous movement to the users.~ A circular amphitheater efficiently directs all concentration towards the stage.~ Spiral design for the gallery gives continuous flow in the circulation to the viewers.~ A circular co-working space increases social interaction and easy movement from one space to another.Silos are sliced at different angles on the top to control and create an interplay of light inside the building. Glazing and Vertical fins are used in the facade for Passive solar shading and light control. AmphitheatreGalleryCo-Working_IDEAThe first step taken while designing the proposed center was to create circular spaces that aid in providing maximum internal interaction, external interplay with the heritage facade and continuous movement through various spaces, thus having strong spatial energy. The use of circular spaces helps in achieving both internal and external interactions, providing highly networked space within the circles as well as between the circles and the square facade. CASCADING TERRACESPROJECT TYPE : RE-DESIGNPURPOSE : MIXED-USE DEVELOPMENTLOCATION : MELBOURNE, AUSTRALIA YEAR : 2018The project was to transform an existing car-park structure into a mixed-use development with singular residential as one of the main use. The focus of the project was individual activity, addressing a future with population control has atomized society. In this evolving context, car parks are now an opportunity, where ‘one individual per car park spot’ became the starting condition for the proposal.The proposal demanded accommodation for the same number of individual as the original structure parking spots. The design can include extensions on original volume for ‘indispensables’ as interconnected programs to residential activity.The project integrated sustainable matters, therefore the design demonstrated environmental awareness and attended interdependent issues. To do so the proposal combined residential program with more ‘indispensable’ attentions, to solve issues regarding interaction of humans with the earth and with each other. The housing should communicate ideas about how to live by the way they are organized on the inside and how they relate to the public realm on the outside while responding to the surrounding contextual street-scape conditions._SITE DESCRIPTIONThe site is located at Parkville, which is an inner-city suburb of Melbourne, Victoria. Parkville is a major research, education and healthcare precinct and home to the top universities and hospitals and this cluster employs 40,100 people. The site encompasses of an existing car-park building called Cardigan House Car Park and is bordered on three sides by existing streets being Grattan Street to the south, Dorrit street to the east and Cardigan street to the west. LIFTING THE EDGE - ENTRANCE ARCHURBAN OASIS - CENTRAL OPEN SPACEPERMEABLE FACADE ELEMENTS ON EVENT SPACES TO CREATE INTEREST FROM THE STREET AS WELL AS VISUAL CONNECTIVITY &LANDSCAPED TERRACESThe first step taken towards the proposed mixed development was to create a CENTRAL OPEN SPACE to bring in sunlight and natural ventilation.The main corner of the building was then opened to create an ENTRANCE ARCH to the building by lifting the edge and creating an entrance to the central open space. The height of the building was then increased to accommodate Residential units and introduced with CASCADING TERRACES that aid in providing panoramic views of the city as well as bring in light and ventilation. The edges on the ground floor were opened by Retails and Cafeteria’s to ACTIVATE THE EDGES, to create interaction between the busy street and the building, thus making use of the ground level frontage on three sides.An URBAN OASIS was designed in the Central Open Space to create a more soothing experience and contrast from the busy surrounding neighborhood. This would invite people to sit, relax, socialize and activate the core of the building, thus creating continuous movement through different spaces creating strong spatial energy and adding value to the building.PERMEABLE FACADE ELEMENTS AND GLAZING were used on event spaces to create interest and visual connectivity from streets.LANDSCAPED TERRACES with activity zones were provided for the users of the building for recreational purposes and quality of life.The overall approach helped in obtaining an innovative and site-responsive form.MASTER’S PROJECTARCHITECTURE40

The process of design development helps architectural ideas to gain essential depth and brings a sense of order, material richness, structural integration, particular qualities of light, and sophisticated spatial definition to the project through repeated design investigation. For this, the unit required to select one of my previous design projects from 5th, 4th or 3rd-year design unit, and use it as the base for the unit’s design investigations. The project, Waterfront Restaurant is a part of a luxury beach river resort designed in my bachelor’s course work final Thesis Project situated in Surathkal, Karnataka, India. Water - used as an aesthetic element, both either as a feature or a function to enrich the design of the building was the main driving principle in the design development of the main project which can be seen in-depth by clicking on the following link - ‘Apas’ Beach River Resort.60

_ARCHITECTURAL IDEA + DESIGN PRINCIPLEThe restaurant block sits in a beautifully landscaped setting, surrounded by a water-body on the north and the east sides and serene combination of a hard and soft landscape on all the sides. The objective was to create a strong relationship between the presence of water and landscape in and around the design of the building. From the beginning, the main design principle driving the project was to give the waterfront and landscape view to the users and make the most use of it and was achieved by producing a series of drawings which are further refined and investigated._SPATIAL ORDER + STRUCTURAL ORDERThe drawings of the ordering principles helped define the column grid and understand the hierarchy of the spaces within, which pointed out that the proposed columns in the original Plan of the restaurant were causing hindrance to the view, thus defeating the main design principle. Therefore, all the columns were offset from all the sides of the Plan, to avoid hindrance to the outside view from inside the restaurant, as can be seen in the Plan. The vision was to create a space with thoroughly clean lines and very minimal embellishments. By preventing distractions of ornamentation within the restaurant, viewers can focus on the surrounding landscape and natural elements, including light water and wind.Geometry and Proportions were used to keep the structure simple and clean. The main shape is a square shared with two rectangles which, when divided, also has the same proportions similar to the geometry of the main square. Concrete, timber and glass were used in the structure. A solid wall is used at the rear of the building to maintain privacy to service areas, kitchen and utilities.MASTER’S PROJECTARCHITECTURE68

PERDOOR PLAZAPROJECT TYPE : URBAN RE-DEVELOPMENTLOCATION : PERDOOR, KARNATAKA INDIAYEAR : SPRING, 2013AWARD : BEST DESIGN PROJECT SEMESTER 6 It is commonly known as temple city, with an ancient temple of Lord Sri Ananthapadmanabha (LORD VISHNU) in the center of the village, which is known to be more than 1,000 years old. There is a sacred stepped water tank known as Pushkarani, within the premises of the temple. The temple is famous for an offering of 1001 bananas to the deity, by people on fulfillment of their wishes. Perdoor Sankranti festival, which occurs every month as per the Hindu calendar, is very famous and attracts thousands of people. The townhouses a rich temple heritage but fails to convey this image to its visitors. The temple square is crowded with small commercial shops, houses, bus stops etc. This spoils the temple vistas, thus deteriorating the heritage value of the town, failing to attract tourists to visit the place. To improve the quality of this heritage site, the temple square needs a face-lift. Further addition of interactive features, informal seating spaces, buffer zones, restaurants will help to bring people together and thus collectively enhance the design._SITE DESCRIPTIONPerdoor is a small village located in Udupi district, Karnataka with a total of 2248 families and has a population of 10,957 as per population census 2011.The existing scenario calls for the need to redesign the temple square. EXISTING SITEThe temple square was cluttered with small retail shops and vacant mini-blocks with settlements sprouting up across the streets on all the sides. MAHADWARA / SHARED STREETMahadwara’s are introduced on all sides to create a prominent entry to the temple and create a sense monumentality. The road abutting the temple on the east side was pedestrianized and changed to the shared street to ease the circulation of people from temple to the commercial zone and also for the Rath to carry out the necessary circumambulation during yatra without hindering the traffic and usual activities.COLONNADED PLAZA / WATER BODYTEMPLE RENOVATION~A green plaza was designed on the north-east side of the temple where people could gather in the evening/during the festival with its periphery marked by series of columns to provide a view of the plaza from the heavy vehicular traffic passing by.~A waterbody (miniature Yamuna Creek ) with Musical Lotus fountain, Rotating Sudarshan Chakras and mini shrine structures were provided to engage the visitors and create interest.~Temple premise was renovated, and additional aesthetic spaces were designed inside the premise._DESIGN CONCEPTIn Hindu mythology, the traditional depiction of Lord Vishnu is that of him reclining on the coils of the serpent Shesha, accompanied by his consort, Lakshmi with left hand-hand holding a Padma (lotus flower) and right hand handing the Sudarshana Chakra and residing deep in the ocean. Water, Lotus and Sudarshan Chakras are believed to be Lord Vishnu’s enchanting elements. Since it was a Vishnu temple, a small scale Yamuna creek outside the temple and to enhance it Musical Lotus fountain, Rotating Sudarshan Chakras producing beautiful ripple effect and mini shrine structures reciting Vishnu’s various shlokas were created.BACHELOR’S PROJECTURBAN DESIGN84

Hence, the plan eventually evolved around the existing site conditions after various proposals and changes.Laterite Masonry was used for the walls with plaster, and Mangalore tiles were used for roofing with wooden bat-tens to give a traditional look. Exposed Masonry was used only on the top portion of the walls to a point were eaves projection could protect it from heavy rainfall conditions. PUNJA ASSOCIATESPROJECT TYPE : INTERIOR DESIGNPURPOSE : OFFICE SPACE LOCATION : MANGALORE YEAR OF COMPLETION : 2017CONCEPT : FOLLY LINESWith a set of predetermined materials, the purpose of the project was to design main office space for a well-known entrepreneur on the ground floor of the company’s building.Space is characterized by custom-made veneers and ceramic tiles with crisp marble texture, which are complemented by viper skin patterned laminates and metallic accessories. At the central axis of the space is a timber-framed partition, which is flanked by two sides accommodating Reception Lobby, MD Cabin, Informal Cabin (meeting room), Staff Workspace, Kitchenette and Washrooms._ DESIGN The vertical partition members are incorporated in the design in a way that they seem folly and is for aesthetic purpose. Taking inspiration from M.C. Escher’s square tessellation - Book and Diamond match of veneers were made with a gradual progression of slowly morphing into tessellated patterns as they move towards the bottom.
