By it's very definition, a hackathon bringstogether individuals to collectively develop solutions to problems forshort and long-term goals, which is why CoreNet developed severalareas to focus on, including: Space Utilization & Metrics, DistributedWork, Workplace Wellbeing, The Autonomous Workplace,Environmental & Climate Change, and Manufacturing & Industrial.SIOR’s participation in the hackathon focused on the latter:Manufacturing and Industrial, something our members know quite abit about. To tackle the challenges poised in this area, two SIOR members—SIOR Global’s President-Elect Patrick Sentner, SIOR, and AmyBroadhurst, SIOR, both of CBRE in Pittsburgh, PA—collaborated toanswer some critical questions impacting the manufacturing andindustrial space. Supply Chain ImpactsThe first question they tackled was: “Will the crisis promptmanufacturing companies to carry out a top-to-bottom review oftheir global supply chains with an eye toward reducing risks?”Continue reading > Large investment firms are seeking to close transactions.Industrial property is more popular than ever, due to its highliquidity and sustainable momentum. It is a sector thatcontinues to grow amidst a pandemic that has brought globaleconomies to a standstill. We are facing an unprecedented global crisis that will have alasting impact for months and years to come. Not since 9/11 haslife been altered in ways that will require drastic modifications toour daily routines. Time was needed to heal then, and it likely willtake a while to return to some sense of normalcy after thecurrent pandemic. But what can we do now to make the most ofwhat is available while continuing to conduct business?A common misconception right now is that all deals are on holdand there isn’t much left to do but wait. According toMinneapolis-based SIOR Mark Kolsrud, senior vice president ofColliers, waiting would be a mistake.Transactional opportunities are still plentiful—if you know whereto look. The industrial sector in particular is thriving in manyareas, and in some instances, even struggling to keep up withoverdemand. Many suppliers of essential products are over-capacity and seeking new storage options to meet demand. Thosekinds of non-essential storage facilities are a prime place tomodify assets and capitalize on the situation.“We are getting calls daily from investors looking to buy,” saysKolsrud. “This is not a down market when it comes toinvestments. We are representing buyers looking foropportunities throughout the country.”According to Kolsrud, investors are still looking to closetransactions in the current economic climate. He would know, considering he just closed the largest deal in Minnesota history,an industrial portfolio sale comprised of 59 properties and 7million square feet that sold for nearly $650 million. The record-breaking sale came about when a large investment firm sought toexpand its Midwest and West portfolio to expand its holdings andcapitalize on the Twin Cities’ booming investment market. While it may seem like an anomaly, miracle, or fluke depending onwhere you stand, this transaction indicates a few trends in themarket:1.2.Continue reading > SIOR EVENT CALENDARAPRIL 2021MANUFACTURING ANDINDUSTRIAL: THEIMPACTS AND IDEASFOR FUTURE PLANNINGFOUR STEPS TOCLOSING ATRANSACTION AMID APANDEMIC2021 Construction Reporter, LLC, All Rights Reserved. For women in male-dominated industries, like architecture, the challenge tomeet career and societal expectations can be intense. The COVID-19pandemic cultivated a new appreciation of these challenges, as well as anawareness of the shifts needed to make the work environment moreflexible and equitable.Despite only making up 24% of AIA members, women are leading andworking alongside their colleagues to support critical changes whileshaping an innovative future. Next fall, they will convene in Silicon Valleyfor the 2022 Women’s Leadership Summit to share their uniqueperspectives, learn from experts, and network with the largest gathering offemale architects in the United States.Five leaders from Women in Architecture Silicon Valley—the chapter thatwill host next year’s Women’s Leadership Summit—provided theirperspectives on the challenges women face in the industry, the changesneeded, and their excitement about the conference. They include MarianaAlvarez Parga, principal at 19six Architects; Leah Alissa Bayer, president ofOJK Architecture + Planning, founder and studio director of EVIA Studio;Katia McClain, managing principal for Northern California Steinberg Hart;Dasha Ortenberg, 2020 chair of the Women in Architecture committee,AIASVC; and Stephanie Silkwood, associate principal at RMW.What are some of the overall challenges that women faced in 2020?In the best of times, women carry heavy mental, logistical and physicalresponsibilities, but 2020 and the COVID-19 pandemic exacerbated theirchallenges. Mariana Alvarez Parga believes that last year “made the manyhurdles that women face even more obvious. That includes mothers, butalso those caring for the elderly or high-risk individuals. There is currently no vaccine to prevent coronavirus disease 2019(COVID-19).The best way to prevent illness is to avoid being exposed to thisvirus. The virus is thought to spread mainly from person-to-person.Between people who are in close contact with one another(within about 6 feet).Through respiratory droplets produced when an infectedperson coughs, sneezes or talks. These droplets can land in the mouths or noses of peoplewho are nearby or possibly be inhaled into the lungs. Some recent studies have suggested that COVID-19 maybe spread by people who are not showing symptoms.Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20seconds especially after you have been in a public place, or afterblowing your nose, coughing, or sneezing. It’s especially important to wash:Before eating or preparing foodBefore touching your faceAfter using the restroomAfter leaving a public placeAfter blowing your nose, coughing, or sneezingAfter handling your cloth face coveringAfter changing a diaperAfter caring for someone sickAfter touching animals or petsIf soap and water are not readily available, use a hand sanitizer thatcontains at least 60% alcohol. Cover all surfaces of your hands andrub them together until they feel dry.Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth with unwashed hands.Inside your home: Avoid close contact with people who are sick.If possible, maintain 6 feet between the person who is sickand other household members.Outside your home: Put 6 feet of distance between yourself andpeople who don’t live in your household.Remember that some people without symptoms may beable to spread virus.Stay at least 6 feet (about 2 arms’ length) from otherpeople.Keeping distance from others is especially importantfor people who are at higher risk of getting very sick.Know how it spreadsEveryone ShouldWash your hands oftenAvoid close contactCLICK HERE FOR MORE INFORMATIONTo keep you informed, we are posting dailyupdates to our website. ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) — New Mexico health officialson Wednesday reported more progress in getting residentsvaccinated as the state continues to lead the U.S. in thevaccine rollout.State Health Secretary Dr. Tracie Collins said 50% ofresidents 16 and older have received their first shot and 31%are fully vaccinated. The latest figures come as other stateslook to expand distribution beyond health care workers andother priority groups to meet an April 19 deadline from theBiden administration. While New Mexico opened up eligibility Monday, Collinssaid priority will still be given to those who are 75 and olderand other senior citizens who have chronic conditions thatput them at greater risk.State officials also said more vaccine clinics are planned, including a dozen in southern New Mexico. They’re alsoworking with health care providers to target people who arehome-bound, noting that about 1,000 doses have beenadministered so far to people in that group.Despite the progress, the officials stressed that vaccinationsalong with continued public health restrictions such as mask-wearing will be important as COVID-19 variants emerge. They said the state’s color-coded risk system for countieswill likely remain in place at least through late May or earlyJune depending on spread rates and daily case totals. As of Wednesday, 10 of the state’s 33 counties wereclassified as yellow, meaning there are more restrictions oncommercial and day-to-day activities amid higher virus risk.“I think we want to move in a general direction that takeseverybody forward. I think the vaccine is the thing that’sgoing to help us to do that, and I think that we just keep whatwe’ve got in place as a backstop in case in the unfortunateevent that we would have to move back into it,” said Dr.David Scrase, head of the New Mexico Department ofHuman Services. The New Mexico National Guard is operating a vaccinedistribution center in Albuquerque, which U.S. Sen. MartinHeinrich toured Tuesday. The distribution effort will benefit from funding included inthe federal government’s most recent pandemic reliefpackage, specifically $20 billion that the New MexicoDemocrat says will supercharge vaccine distributionsnationwide.Continue reading > Six weeks after New Mexico health officials unveiled theleast restrictive tier under its framework for lifting Covid-19 restrictions, 20 counties are classified as Turquoise, according to Department of Health data releasedWednesday afternoon. The 20 counties are Catron, Chaves, Colfax, Curry, DeBaca, Eddy, Lea, Lincoln, Los Alamos, McKinley, Mora,Quay, Rio Arriba, Roosevelt, Santa Fe, Sierra, Socorro,Taos, Torrance and Union countiesIntroduced Feb. 24, the Turquoise tier offers the leastrestrictive occupancy limits for many categories ofbusinesses. THEFT&SECURITY Earlier this year, burglars used a backhoe to smash into LandingsRestaurant in Portugal Cove–St. Philip's and swipe its ATM. Thatalready marked the fifth time so far this year that heavy equipmenthas been used in thefts in the area. Another person has beenarrested for stealing an S160 Bobcat brand skid steer loader inMoniteau County. In July, a Coleman Township man was charged withstealing a skid steer from a Firstbrook Line Road address inTemiskaming Shores. These are only a few among the many cases ofconstruction equipment theft this year.In fact, for business owners around the world, constructionequipment theft continues to be a major issue. Because sites areusually left unattended and anyone can get in and out whilepretending to be one of the foremen, thieves find stealing equipmenta low-risk yet high-value job. It is even easier to sell stolen equipmentto unsuspecting buyers due to unavailability of titles and registrationsconsolidated in one database.Glen Sider, operations manager at the National Equipment Register(NER), relayed the usual narrative about one of the reportedequipment theft incidents. On a Sunday morning, a foremanhappened to pass by one of his construction sites and noticed menloading a machine onto a flatbed trailer. The foreman reasoned outwith the two men and found out they were just employees from theleasing company. He maintained he hadn't called for a routinemaintenance, yet the two men handed paperwork printed on theleasing company's letterhead, confirming all particulars of the saidrequest. The documents looked real, so he let the men continue—only to find out the equipment was nowhere to be found the nextmorning, the day they promised to return it.The Reality of Construction Equipment TheftAccording to the 2016 Annual Theft Report by the NER, constructionequipment theft is more rampant in states where there's a record-high volume of construction and therefore have the most machinery, particularly Texas and North Carolina. It was found that most stolenequipment are loaders (skid steer, backhoe, and wheel loader) andtractors. Interestingly, the report points out that the larger theequipment, the greater risk of it being stolen while remainingunnoticeable to those in charge of managing them. The reportfurther shows that thieves choose high-value equipment from well-known manufacturers like Cat, Toro, Kubota, John Deere, Bobcat, andothers. In 2017, data from the LoJack Corporation Study on ConstructionEquipment Theft reveals that the type of heavy constructionequipment stolen were loaders (26%): backhoes, skid steers, tracked, and wheeled. Not far behind are towables (20%) comprising of aircompressors, chippers, generators, light towers, and welderspredominantly. While excavators ranked third on the list, the newlyincluded category of trailers and RVs was not far behind. Californiaand Texas continue to be the top states where theft is common.Continue reading > NEW MEXICOUSEFUL INFORMATION AND TIPSHere's How You Prevent ConstructionEquipment TheftBy The IRSLET US HELP YOU RECOVER YOUR STOLENPROPERTY AND PROTECT YOUR ASSETS!
