We are thrilled to present our second magazine issue of the year, dedicated to the captivating beauty of roses. This longstanding tradition stems from the love our American members have for painting these exquisite flowers. Our team has worked tirelessly to curate a collection of articles showcasing stunning rose paintings, and we hope you find them as inspiring as we do. In addition to our rose-themed articles, we are excited to showcase the exceptional works of the Silver Awardees from our 2023 online competition. Their talent deserves recognition. We have also included a variety of captivating artworks on different themes to cater to the diverse interests of our international members. We sincerely appreciate your support and passion for the arts. We hope that this issue sparks inspiration and fosters a sense of unity in our artistic community. We believe that our magazine is truly brought to life by the contributions of our talented members. We invite you to submit your own remarkable paintings for publication, as your unique perspectives and creative visions will further enrich our magazine and create a platform for artists to connect and inspire one another. (Mixed Media) Hong Kong and Korean Artists Jointly Present a Journey of Porcelain Art Showcasing the Cultural Exploration of Hong Kong’s Mass Transit Railway Network In this third section of the six-month-long porcelain art exhibition, two mass transit railway (MTR) stations have been chosen as the venues. One of the benefits of this arrangement is that viewers have the opportunity to stand in close proximity to the plates painted for the exhibit. This proximity allows them to explore and appreciate the intricate techniques employed in the creation of these plates. With nearly a hundred plates on display, each showcasing landmarks from Hong Kong’s MTR stations, viewers can immerse themselves in the beauty and artistry of the exhibition. 32

Again the colors were designed to go well with the color of the coee. The set was painted with china paints using open oil. It took three res to nish: 1st - pink glaze, 2nd - colors and 3rd – gold. 34

A Rose from My Garden I once saw a beauful sunlit rose in the garden, photographed it, then enlarged it and painted it on a plate. It took me 3 res to nish: 1st - pink, orange and green, 2nd - reds, 3rd pink glaze. A Pink & Red Rose Again a rose from my garden, enlarged and painted on a le. It took 2 res: 1st - pink, orange, 2nd – reds. Joanna Swierczek 35

Hand-built Rose Wall Decoraon This mixed-media piece was hand-built from Audrey Blackman porcelain (also using slip trailing technique), red to 1280 degrees Celsius (2336 degrees Fahrenheit) and painted overglaze with china paints. Addionally, it was decorated with bright gold and glass. Some of the pearls and gold leaf elements were added aer ring. Joanna painted a piece with similar technique in 2020 for IPAT’s rst online compeon and won a gold ribbon. It was chosen to become the Compeon Book cover. Joanna Swierczek Melina Fiorella, Alabama, USA I have been painng porcelain china for over 35 years. I went to class for years with the same teacher and also studied with many brilliant, talented teachers from all over the world who have shared their styles generously. At the IPAT convenon in Las Vegas, I entered a Teapot Chandelier I created, using a teapot, cups and saucers that I painted. I also entered a paella plaer painted with a portrait of my granddaughter, Mason, and sunowers. The IPAT convenon in Las Vegas was fabulous. It was lled with exquisite painted china, costumes and ags from all countries. I had so much fun and met many new friends. The classes, teachers and demos were excellent. Lately I have been enjoying reading all my older magazines. I’m so thankful I saved them in plasc sleeves and put them in binders. It is a beauful life to enjoy the IPAT magazines and paint on porcelain almost every day. I love all my treasures that I have painted and use them daily. Scan QR code for more info on the arst. 52 TULIPS By Jane Bowen, Georgia, USA

Page 53

53TULIPS Brushes and Tools: Square shaders, pointers, linen, wipe out tool. Colors: Mixing Yellow, Bu, Deep Yellow Brown, Dark Violet, Black, Poppy Red, Red-Red, Kelly Green, Shading Green, Black Green. Mix paints with Drying Medium to a honey consistency. Add one drop of Fat Oil to each mixed color. This enables a heavier applicaon of paint. As the paint begins to dry, add Thinner to the paint and brush as needed. How to design Tulips are grown from bulbs and come in many variees and colors. The owers have many shapes and change spectacularly, as they become more open. Some variees have shaggy, ragged-edged petals like the parrot tulips while others are smooth-edged and ghtly cupped. Some variees have disncve stripes on the petals while others have a colored center or eye. Leaves are large and quite disncve as they wrap around the stems of the tulips. Some of the leaves can be located higher on the stem instead of having to be basal, as are so many bulbs. To create a pleasing design on the porcelain, locate where the main ower and secondary ower will be and show a variety of posions of the owers and buds. Best results for painng will be achieved if you can sketch and paint from live owers. Sketch design completely on the porcelain or on paper, then trace on the porcelain. How to paint Paint from back to front so the rst elements painted will be the leaves. Using a square shader load all the colors of green, loading the lightest rst and ending with a corner load of black green. Brush on the foliage with long strokes, allowing the bristles to create the veins of the leaves. When painng the owers, brush on the back petals rst and slowly work to the front petal. Complete each petal with its shading before moving to the next petal. Where the petals bend and fold, shade and highlight appropriately. Then paint the back owers, leaving the main ower unl last. It is easier to paint on top of an element of the design than to have to put a ower underneath a previously painted element. Use several colors of yellow and leave highlights. The stripes help to accentuate the bends and turns of the petals. Shade under each petal and toward the center of the petals. The center of these tulips has a dark violet shading, with black and dark violet (mixed on brush) stamens. Center sgma is green. Do as many res as needed to achieve the desired results.

33Betty Ann Craig California, USA My porcelain painting journey began with my step-grandmother paying for a month of china painting lessons in the mid-1990s. In no time at all, I was hooked! All I planned to do was to make some decorative, tabletop items. But, oh my, the wonderful variations of shapes (not just flat, but round, long, short, and twisted), textures (raised, cracked or smooth), and colors (fluxed, matt, lusters and metallics) along with mixed media, called to me. I painted so much more. When I paint, suddenly hours have passed. Of course, the most fantastic by-product of this art form is the wonderful people, now friends, I have gained. Thank you all! 54
