SETTING: Terry is sitting at a desk in the classroom, making a sign, when Chris walks by. PROPS: A marker and a sign reading "Lemonade for Sale!" Chris: What are you doing, Terry? Terry: I'm going into the lemonade business at our next market session, Chris. Here, read this sign. (TERRY STANDS UP AND SHOWS THE SIGN.) Chris: Lemonade for Sale! How much? Terry: Fifty ____________s a cup. Chris: Fifty ____________s a cup! Are you crazy, Terry? I have better things to do with my hard earned money than to spend fifty ____________s on a cup of lemonade! Terry: But, Chris! There are so many neat things for sale at our mini-society markets. And I want to buy lots of them. But I just don't make enough money. I've got to start earning more! Chris: I don't think you will sell much lemonade at fifty ____________s a cup. Terry: I've just got to get the money before our next market day! So I'm going to start selling lemonade to get the money that I want. (LESLIE ENTERS.) Leslie: Hi! What's going on? Chris: Terry is going to sell lemonade, Leslie, but it costs too much for me to buy. Leslie: How much is it? Terry: Fifty ____________s a cup is what I said, but maybe that is too much. How much would you pay for a cup, Chris? Chris: I might give you 30 ____________s a cup since you're my friend. Leslie: I only have 10 ____________s. Terry: Leslie, that's not enough! I have to pay for the lemons, the sugar, and the cups that I get from the classroom warehouse, you know. That costs 17 ____________s for each cup I make. Plus, I made a deal with my friend Sarah to use her desk in the front of the room for the lemonade stand, on the condition that I pay her 2 ____________s for each cup of lemonade that I sell. Leslie: Here comes Pat and some other kids. Why don't you ask them. Maybe they will pay you 50 ____________s a cup for your lemonade. (PAT AND THREE CLASSMATES ENTER.) Pat: Hi, Terry! Are you planning to sell lemonade? Terry: Yes, Pat. Would you like to buy some? It's really good! Pat: How much? Terry: I haven't decided on a price yet. Maybe you can help! How many cups of lemonade would you buy if I charge 50 ____________s a cup? Everyone: None! (EVERYONE EXCEPT TERRY SHAKES HEAD TO SIGNIFY "NO.")

Well, I'd buy one cup. Leslie: Not me. Chris: Me, either. (THE THREE CLASSMATES SHAKE HEADS TO SIGNIFY "NO.") Terry: Well, that's just one customer. How many cups would you buy at 30 ____________s a cup? (PAUSE. PAT AND CHRIS RAISE HANDS.) Pat: I guess I'd still buy one cup. Chris: And I'd buy one cup, at that price. Leslie: That's still too much for me. (THE THREE CLASSMATES SHAKE HEADS TO SIGNIFY "NO.") Terry: That's two customers this time. How many cups would you buy at 25 ____________s a cup? (PAUSE. EVERYONE EXCEPT TERRY RAISES A HAND.) Pat: One for me! Chris: Me, too. (LOOKING AROUND) I think we all would want a cup! Leslie: Yes! I'd take one, too, even if I have to borrow the money! Terry: (COUNTING CUSTOMERS) One, two, three, four, five, six. That's better! Six customers! What about 20 ____________s a cup. How many cups would you buy then? (PAUSE. EVERYONE EXCEPT TERRY RAISES A HAND, EXCITEDLY.) Pat: For that price, I'd buy two cups! Chris: Me, too! Leslie: (LESLIE LOOKS AROUND. THE THREE CLASSMATES SHAKE HEADS TO SIGNIFY "YES.") I think we all would all would want two cups. Terry: Wow! That would make twelve cups! Leslie: Why don't you sell it for 15 ____________s a cup. I'll bet everyone would buy 3 cups apiece! (EVERYONE EXCEPT TERRY SHAKES HEAD EXCITEDLY TO SIGNIFY "YES.") Terry: Now wait a minute, Leslie. It costs me more than 15 ____________s a cup to produce the lemonade. I couldn't sell it for that price! I'd lose money! Chris: Well, have you made up your mind about the price? It sure would be nice to have some lemonade at our next market. Terry: OK! Some friends of mine are going to help me figure out how much I should charge for my lemonade. Will you check with me later? I should be able to tell you my price then. Pat: Sure. We'll be back! Chris: See you later! Everyone: Bye! (EVERYONE WAVES AND EXITS.)
