Reading Makes Cents 2017-18Isabel’s Car WashThe Characteristics of an EntrepreneurIntroduction: In the book Isabel’s Car Wash, Isabel is an entrepreneur. She starts a carwash business with the goal of making a profit. What characteristics does it take to be asuccessful entrepreneur?Time Required: 25-30 minutes.Materials:● Chart paper and marker● Characteristic Cards – (Best printed on cardstock)Objectives:● The student will be introduced to the characteristics of an entrepreneur● The student will participate in a teacher directed activity ranking thecharacteristics of an entrepreneurVirginia Standards of Learning Economics and Personal FinanceEPF.2The student will demonstrate knowledge of the role of producers and consumers in amarket economy by c) identifying the role of entrepreneurs;Procedure:1. Collect and prepare materials prior to class.2. Read Isabel’s Car Wash to the students if time allows. Reading time is about tenminutes. YouTube Link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qGTbSDuPL8c3. Introduce the lesson by asking the students if they have ever heard of the wordentrepreneur. Define entrepreneur as a person who combines productiveresources to produce goods and services that they expect to sell for a profit.4. Ask the students if they can think of any person who fits this definition. Recordthese responses on chart paper or a white board. Possible answers include: BillGates (software), Jeff Bezos (online retail), Walt Disney (entertainment), HenryFord (automobiles), Steve Jobs (computers), Milton Hershey (chocolate), LarryPage & Sergey Brin (google) and Mark Zuckerberg (Facebook), Vera Wang(fashion), Mark Zuckerberg (Facebook). Discuss the entrepreneurs the studentshave suggested. Question why they think they were successful.5. Explain to the students that they are going to participating in an activity that hasno right or wrong answers. They will be arranging a set of characteristic cardsthat list these ten words: self-confident, determined, honest, creative,enthusiastic, hard-worker, risk-taker, self-sufficient, competitive, and energetic.6. Distribute the cards to ten students. Ask them to come up to the front of theclassroom. Tell the students to arrange themselves (from left to right) so thattheir cards display the most desirable characteristic an entrepreneur needs to theleast-needed. If students are knowledgeable of the literary entrepreneurs BillySure and Cleo Oliver, suggest that they rank the characteristics based on aspecific character.7.
