5about up closeUp Close offers the unique chance to view Ballet Theatre Company’s professional dancers and advanced students of the Junior Corps de Ballet at close range, giving a completely new perspective on ballet appealing to new and returning audience members alike. While dance in a traditional theatre setting is thrilling, hearing the dancers’ breath and shoes on the floor, and watching them prepare in the “wings” between each entrance brings audience members enchanting insight into the physicality behind this powerful art form.Up Close was first introduced virtually to BTC’s performance season in Fall of 2020 when theaters remained closed. The intention of this performance series was to showcase the beauty and athleticism of ballet in a new perspective, and audiences responded with great interest and enthusiasm. Since then, BTC has welcomed hundreds of community members into its home theater to introduce classical and contemporary works in a cozy and intimate setting.Paul Mejia’s “Serenade in A”, Up Close: Spring 2022 | Photo: Tracy Dorman

She is very arrogant and infuriated when the mother interrupts her rehearsal and she must start over.Section 4: Prima Ballerina 2 She is the more amboyant of the two primas and very jealous of Prima 1’s talent. She is bossy and pushes the corps dancers around.Section 5: Overbearing Mother The Mother makes sure that her daughter is not overlooked. She pushes her daughter to the forefront whenever possible.Section 6: Fight between Primas The ght begins with the two Primas mocking the movements of the young daughter, but suddenly they nd themselves in a competition to see who’s betterSection 7: Boyfriend & GirlfriendThe girlfriend is proud of her boyfriend’s accomplishments and both wish for the ballet master to observe him. 8up close: winter 2024programAbout Après Degas“Après Degas,” choreographed by Marguerite de Anguera of the Connecticut Valley Regional Ballet in 1975, was later reconstructed and restaged at BTC by Tracy Dorman. The ballet was included in BTC’s Spring repertory performances in 2002, 2006, 2012, and 2015.“Après Degas” is a comic spoof on the ballet paintings of Edgar Degas. The ballet depicts a day in the life of the Paris Opera Ballet during the Romantic Era of the mid-1800s; daily class is enacted including barre and center, followed by rehearsal that follows the struggle between two prima ballerinas and a young dancer who is pushed by her “stage mother”. 9up close: winter 2024marguerite de AngueraChoreographer Marguerite de Anguera was born on February 21, 1911 in Rochester, NY. Dancing was her childhood dream and her love for dance would last her entire life. Her career would span every aspect of dancing, from ballet to Radio City Music Hall, Broadway, night clubs and theater, from teaching to choreography.Marguerite graduated from Barnard College in 1932 and went on to study and perform with some of the greatest ballet and modern choreographers of the era, including Agnes de Mille, Marge Champion and the original Jooss Ballet, performing in Europe and all over the United States. Marguerite wrote, taught and choreographed various musicals, modern dance and balletic productions. From the Archives 2002Choreographer Marguerite de Anguera during her residency with BTC in 2002. Photo by Tracy DormanChoreographer Marguerite de Anguera with dancer Carolyn Paine in 2002. Photo by Jay StockDuring Ms. de Anguera’s residency at BTC in 2002, Tracy Dorman staged her ballet Après Degas on the company. Dancer Carolyn Paine expressed that “having the opportunity to meet and work with Ms. Marguerite de Anguera when the Ballet Theatre Company rst performed ‘Après Degas’ is one of my favorite ballet memories. She was in her 90s at the time and still lled with energy and grace... even as a young dancer here, I knew I wanted to go on to choreograph, so it was so special to spend time with and be inspired by a female choreographer who really paved the way in American ballet. I especially loved her sense of humor and how she brought that to her ‘Après Degas’ story ballet-this...inspired me with many of my future works. I am so happy that Ballet Theatre Company is continuing to honor Ms. de Anguera’s legacy by performing her ballet.”

A ballet in three acts, Don Quixote opens in a square in Barcelona where Kitri professes her love for Basilio, despite her father’s insistence that she marry the wealthy Gamache instead. Don Quixote arrives, anked by his trusty sidekick Sancho Panza, and in the commotion, Kitri and Basilio sneak away. Don Quixote, Sancho Panza, and Gamache pursue Kitri and Basilio, which leads them through a number of adventures in the second act. Most notably, when Don Quixote valiantly ghts a windmill thinking it is a beast, and the iconic dream scene featuring Dulcinea, the Queen of the Dryads, and Cupid. After several twists and turns, Don Quixote ultimately nds Kitri and Basilio and convinces Kitri’s father, Lorenzo, to allow Kitri and Basilio to be married. The ballet closes in Act III with Kitri and Basilio’s joyous wedding, attended of course, by the guest of honor, Don Quixote. We hope you enjoy brief excerpts from this exciting and tumultuous tale. up close: winter 2024program

26pointe shoe patronage Many thanks to Pointe Shoe Patron Pointe Shoe PatronageGOAL: BTC seeks to raise $10,000 to provide pointe shoes for its dancers for the entire Season 25. This funding will cover shoes for 16 total performances and the accompanying rehearsals. BTC’s dancers use 1-2 pairs of pointe shoes per week. Retailing at between $75 and $150 a pair, pointe shoes can pose a serious nancial barrier. With the help of our Pointe Shoe Fund and generous donors like you, we are able to subsidize the cost of pointe shoes for our artists and select students. Made by hand with satin, glue, and leather, each pointe shoe is created with care and precision. With over a hundred brands and styles, each shoe is designed to break down and mold to a dancer’s foot, allowing for those breathtaking moments we see on stage during BTC performances.Hardworking pointe shoes don’t last long. Some pairs will only last a single performance; others one week of rehearsals, or at most two. While we are proud of our eorts to increase pointe shoe funds for our dancers year after year, our goal is to establish a robust fund that will allow us to completely alleviate pointe shoe costs for all dancers under contract.donate to the pointe shoe fundJo-ann Burke, BTC Company Dancer | Photo: Thomas Giroirhttps://www.dancebtc.org/pointe-shoe-patronage
