about up closeUp Close offers the unique chance to view Ballet Theatre Company’s professional dancers and advanced students of the Junior Corps de Ballet at close range, giving a completely new perspective on ballet appealing to new and returning audience members alike. While dance in a traditional theatre setting is thrilling, hearing the dancers’ breath and shoes on the floor, and watching them prepare in the “wings” between each entrance brings audience members enchanting insight into the physicality behind this powerful art form.Up Close was first introduced virtually to BTC’s performance season in Fall of 2020 when theaters remained closed. The intention of this performance series was to showcase the beauty and athleticism of ballet in a new perspective, and audiences responded with great interest and enthusiasm. Since then, BTC has welcomed hundreds of community members into its home theater to introduce classical and contemporary works in a cozy and intimate setting.Paul Mejia’s “Serenade in A”, Up Close: Spring 2022 | Photo: Tracy DormanA New Perspective on the Exhilarating Art of Ballet

Everyone knows where they are going and they are on a mission. In my mind, I imagine slowing down time in the middle of that rush to see how there is cohesion in the chaos as there are no collisions.” Elizabeth also shared that she tries to challenge her own movement quality when working on choreography. She likes the idea of dierent dynamics and trying to excite the audience with dierent aspects within one piece. In addition, she wanted to challenge the students with something dierent. “I wanted to give them movement that was new to them and would push them to move quickly,” she shares. “I kept throwing out the phrase organized chaos and I feel like that is an accurate depiction of the intent behind a lot of the patterns. I wanted them to feel like they were really giving in to the movement.”10 minute intermissionup close: spring 2024program
guest Choreographer Elizabeth van Heerden In addition to the premiere of Brockington’s Starburst, the performance will also feature a new work by resident dancer Elizabeth van Heerden. Van Heerden was selected as part of an initiative newly launched last spring by Artistic Director Stephanie Dattellas that gives BTC’s resident professional dancers the opportunity to choreograph a piece on its Junior Corps de Ballet. Interested dancers are invited to submit a choreographic proposal and one dancer is selected to choreograph and present their work as part of Up Close. Though Dattellas now has a repertoire of full-length ballets in her choreographic arsenal, she recognizes and highly values the impact of choreographic opportunities in addition to performance for interested dancers early on in their careers.Elizabeth is from Cape Town, South Africa where she began dancing at a young age with Marina Nicolaou and later with the Cape Junior Ballet School. She went on to study at the Kirov Academy of Ballet of Washington DC for four years, receiving Russian training under teachers from the Vaganova Academy, Bolshoi, and Perm schools. After graduating as valedictorian with honors, she went on to study at Butler University as a member of Butler Ballet. She graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Dance: Arts Administration and a minor in English with high honors in the Spring of 2023. She has performed in a range of classical ballet repertoire including Giselle, The Nutcracker, Swan Lake, and La Bayadere. She also performed in a production of Balanchine’s Serenade while at Butler under the direction of Deborah Wingert.up close: spring 2024 I see experimentation with movement and choreography as a form of therapy. It has helped me to look at dance in a dierent light as well as to understand how to be more adaptable as a dancer. When dancers enter a rehearsal ready to work you are able to not just create but also collaborate. I love working with movement that feels good but also challenges.

About Starburst“Starburst explores three main themes: joy, profound loss, and rediscovery,” shares Brockington.“I’ve challenged myself to use music composed by black artists. I nd that the music tells another side of history with personal stories that inuence the sound. The music for the rst movement is composed by Jessie Montgomery, a prominent new black female composer. This music is bright and full of vitality, representing joy for me. The second piece is composed by William Grant Still, a prolic artist with over 200 rarely used works. As we begin to create the other movements, we will delve into the other themes. The dancers greatly inspire what unfolds in the studio, and I aim to let their personalities inform some of the work we create. I’m very excited for the opportunity to create a larger piece for BTC and, hopefully, to tell more stories.”up close: spring 2024programRehearsal for Starburst, choreographer Derek Brockington, Up Close: Spring 2024 | Photo by Kai Whalen
up close: spring 2024resident Choreographer Derek BrockingtonBallet Theatre Company is thrilled to welcome Derek Brockington as a Resident Choreographer for its 25th Anniversary Season. After an exciting sneak peek of the work at Up Close: Fall, BTC’s Up Close: Spring performance series will feature the full premiere of Resident Choreographer Derek Brockington’s Starburst. Brockington, a dancer with the world-renowned company, Dance Theatre of Harlem, has also been a long-time guest dancer with BTC, and rst choreographed for the company in 2021. As BTC’s rst-ever Resident Choreographer, Brockington began working with the company dancers in early September and has since returned throughout the season to continue developing and ne-tuning Starburst in anticipation of its March premiere. It’s been amazing to have so much space to create, and to work with dancers who are willing to do so much. I want to focus on creating a feeling rather than creating more movement. I’m excited to continue that journey. Brockington was born in Chicago, IL, and raised in Holland, MI. He started his training at the Dance Asylum and moved to Grand Rapids Ballet School, Blue Lake Fine Arts, and attended Interlochen Arts Academy for his high school. Attended summer intensives at Ballet West and Pennsylvania Ballet Summer Intensives. Professional Experience: Dance Theatre of Harlem (sixth season), Cincinnati Ballet, Grand Rapids Ballet. Repertoire includes works by Claudia Schreier, Stanton Welch, George Balanchine, Robert Garland, Annabelle Lopez Ochoa, Nacho Duato, William Forsythe, and Darrell Grand Moultrie. He has choreographed for Columbia Ballet Collaborative, Ballet Theatre Company, and Dance Theatre of Harlem. Along with DTH’s Alexandra Hutchinson, he coordinates DTH social media.
In 1999, Ballet Theatre Company (BTC) was a small ballet company putting on one spring performance per year. Within twenty-ve years, it has grown exponentially to become Connecticut’s leading ballet organization.BTC was founded to produce professional dance productions for public enjoyment. Since 1999, the organization has grown to become a community leader in making dance accessible. BTC has ensured that dance is accessible to children and their families who faced nancial hardship by hosting free performances and after-school dance classes. This mission would later evolve into its Community Enrichment Program. BTC also trains the next generation of ballet dancers through its distinguished School of Ballet Theatre Company.Season innovation becomes traditionBallet Theatre Company Celebrates 25 years! To learn more, scan the code or visit www.dancebtc.org/btc-celebrates-25-years

pointe shoe patronage Many thanks to Pointe Shoe Patron Pointe Shoe PatronageGOAL: BTC seeks to raise $10,000 to provide pointe shoes for its dancers for the entire Season 25. This funding will cover shoes for 16 total performances and the accompanying rehearsals. BTC’s dancers use 1-2 pairs of pointe shoes per week. Retailing at between $75 and $150 a pair, pointe shoes can pose a serious nancial barrier. With the help of our Pointe Shoe Fund and generous donors like you, we are able to subsidize the cost of pointe shoes for our artists and select students. Made by hand with satin, glue, and leather, each pointe shoe is created with care and precision. With over a hundred brands and styles, each shoe is designed to break down and mold to a dancer’s foot, allowing for those breathtaking moments we see on stage during BTC performances.Hardworking pointe shoes don’t last long. Some pairs will only last a single performance; others one week of rehearsals, or at most two. While we are proud of our eorts to increase pointe shoe funds for our dancers year after year, our goal is to establish a robust fund that will allow us to completely alleviate pointe shoe costs for all dancers under contract.donate to the pointe shoe fundJo-ann Burke, BTC Company Dancer | Photo: Thomas Giroirhttps://www.dancebtc.org/pointe-shoe-patronage
