WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW REMOTE LEARNING PLANS Remote Learning Plans or RLPs are not IEPs If a child has an IEP it s likely the family recently received a Remote Learning Plan However most parents do not know the difference between an IEP and an RLP and it s to their child s detriment To be clear the federal rights for children with an IEP to receive a free and appropriate education or what s known as FAPE that meets that child s individual and unique needs has not changed Moreover no new laws have passed to change the special education rights afforded in the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act known as IDEA The US Department of Education has been clear Districts must implement IEPs and follow the IDEA Simply put Don t sign away your rights If an RLP is not appropriate reject it BreakingAutism com info BreakingAutism com 06

2021 REMOTE LEARNING PLANS CONTINUED There are no waivers to IEPs or IDEA rights Yet Parents are signing RLPs without fully knowing the implications We re seeing countless remote learning plans actually reduce critical services like specialized instruction speech OT and social work without informing parents and including parent input on the plan These reductions likely mean the child s progress is going to be affected and that s not OK This is so important and most parents aren t able to read between the lines to see the seriousness of what is happening Make sure you compare the IEP against your remote learning plan Also learn how to monitor your child s progress on your own to make sure your IEP is truly working Net net parents have options and there is help Breaking Autism is offering IEP and Remote Learning Plan analysis There are no waivers to IEPs or IDEA rights Yet Parents are signing RLPs without fully knowing the implications Call us for help and use our free resources Check out our Special Education Rights Resources During COVID 19 video other must know videos on our YouTube Channel and join our workshops to get answers to your special education questions Go to BreakingAutism com for Sample Letters Guides and more info BreakingAutism com BreakingAutism com info BreakingAutism com 07
