T Program Notes he Suffragette Symphony was conceived to coincide with the 100th anniversary of women s suffrage nationwide and the 150th in Wyoming To mark this momentous occasion The WSO commissioned an original composition from American composer Stephanie Ann Boyd with the generous support of the Doane family Boyd visited Casper in 2019 before composing this unique piece where she had the opportunity to hear the WSO orchestra perform talk to local scholars on the history of Wyoming s suffrage movement meet community members and experience a wide swath of our state s gorgeous landscapes As a result of the unexpected spread of covid 19 in early 2020 we were not able to premiere this historic composition on its original date We are thrilled to finally present you Stephanie Ann Boyd s Julia Louisa Esther during Women s History Month 2022 alongside a program celebrating the artistic accomplishments and contributions of women throughout musical history While it may seem that music composition is the quintessential Old Boys Club a number of examples of music written by women can easily be heard going all the way back to Hildegard von Bingen the Renaissance Woman who happened to be born half a millennium before the Renaissance and Florence Price whose music we hear tonight are just a few names of women who flourished as composers from the mid nineteenth century to the first half of the twentieth century counterbalanced by notes which don t seem to fit the rest of the music as if the scale had been temporarily bent This gives a little tension which is quickly released by moving to the right note and is a technique we hear in much of the jazz of the early twentieth century The dances depict life among the laborers who after a strenuous day clearing the fields would entertain themselves with music and dance The lyrical melodies are accompanied by syncopated bass lines which together establish a laid back cheerful mood We hear this lightness interlude before Act IV and the Act I Procession of the Toreadors While the Procession of the Toreadors is familiar in its own context we know the Aragonaise partly through other music that the opera inspired most notably Pablo de Sarasate s Carmen Fantasy for solo violin and orchestra French Composer George Bizet died shortly after the premiere of one of his best known works his opera Carmen While later operas centered on a female lead character it is unusual prior to the Florence Price grew up in Little Rock Arkansas and mid nineteenth century for an operatic female studied at the New England Conservatory She is protagonist to be something other than a mythic believed to be one of the first African American character women to have a work performed by a major Because the music provides such vivid imagery orchestra her Symphony in E was premiered by many excerpts from the opera were adapted the Chicago Symphony in 1927 One of her last into two suites written by Bizet s friend Ernest works Dances in the Canebrakes was written for Guiraud published roughly a decade after Bizet s solo piano and following her death in 1953 death Much like Tschaikovsky s Suite from the was orchestrated by William Grant Still The title Nutcracker the music from the Carmen Suites refers to canebrakes stands of cane which had to provides arguably the greatest public impression be cleared from southern farms to make way for of the larger work including an instrumental cotton to be planted version of the Habanera from Act I the Aragonaise

Program note from Stephanie Ann Boyd JULIA LOUISA ESTHER s first movement is a depiction of the wild land that was no place for a woman a tableau of the High Plains the majesty of Wyoming s many rivers the thunderous galloping of wild horses and the crystalline silence at the top of the Grand Tetons The second movement then delves into the mutual love and respect between a saloon owner and his wife Julia Bright fortified with sonic paintings of Wyoming by moonlight The third movement s fervent frenetic energy highlights his arguments on behalf of women when he introduced a bill that allowed them their civic say the moment of the first vote entered by a woman Louisa Swain on a day in early September and the victory of Esther Morris s appointment as Justice of the Peace soon thereafter she was the first woman to ever hold public office in the United States The fourth movement brings the work to its close in a final anthem to the justice that Wyoming gave to its women the justice that inspired other states to follow suit in this most necessary most basic of human freedoms an action that prompted Susan B Anthony to declare that Wyoming is the first place on God s green earth which could consistently claim to be the land of the free The inscription on the first page on the score reads Inspired by Paulann a brave pioneer who brought new horizons to all those who were graced to walk beside her And the many women including Julia Louisa and Esther who brought new horizons of capability and possibility to so many in their wake May we all have the courage to seek our own horizons not only for ourselves but so as to provide a sturdier path for those who will inevitably follow us In Memoriam Paulann Doane Julia Lousia Esther was commissioned in memoriam of Paulann Tanner Doane fervent advocate of the arts and champion of education and learning As Julia Lousia and Esther were trailblazers in their own time Paulann was a leading light at the Casper College Foundation and in her eight years at it s head increased the foundation s assets by 44 5 million and awarded 7 5 million in scholarships and 21 9 million in support to Casper College Paulann also headed the final stages of the fundraising campaign raising the money to build five new buildings on the Casper College campus including the Walter H Nolte Gateway Center and the Music Building Paulann earned a Bachelor of Arts in Theatre and Dance from the University of Wyoming and a Master of Arts Administration from American University During college she participated in theatre productions at UW and completed an internship with the Kennedy Center where she helped to organize the National College Theatre Festival After receiving her M A she worked at Wolf Trap Performing Arts Center near Washington D C Later Paulann and her husband Rob returned to the West where she accepted a position at AIMS Community College in Greeley CO and later at Red Rocks Community College in Denver Paulann and Rob were great supporters of the arts throughout their years in Casper attending art music and theatre events Rob Avery and Zach wanted to memorialize Paulann with this piece because like Julia Louisa and Esther she exemplified the spirit of Wyoming Women The creation of this piece allows Paulann s spirit to continue to represent Wyoming Women through the arts for years to come
