s p on s or ed b y HEALTH WELLNESS HEALTHYHABITS Giving Effective Commands Many caregivers find themselves begging pleading negotiating bribing yelling threatening reminding children of their full names or any number of other strategies to get children to comply Despite parents attempts getting kids to do what you need them to do may feel impossible Many factors influence whether children will comply with instructions they are given We know that optimal compliance occurs when 1 2 Children and caregiver are actively working on having a positive relationship Caregivers give effective commands with good follow through The following steps are designed to help caregivers give effective commands Give commands only when needed and you are prepared to follow through Tell children what you want them to do not what you want them to stop doing e g if your child is jumping on the couch say please sit on the couch not please stop jumping Give commands for tasks or abilities that your child has demonstrated being able to accomplish successfully Avoid those they are still learning This is important because it takes the guessing out of deciding if they did not follow the instruction due to lack of ability or noncompliance Give one step instructions Children often get distracted with multistep commands like brush your teeth put shoes on and grab your backpack Chances are one step will be missed Include rationale for the command We are in church please use your inside voice Be specific please give me that please come 14 by me please use an indoor voice rather than be careful stop that or settle down Use a normal tone of voice to help kids pay attention to what you are saying and not how you are saying it Tell them do not ask Avoid phrases starting with will you could you can you let s and instead state exactly what you want them to do like please clean up your toys please give me that or please walk Parenting is hard but with continuous effort patience and a few effective approaches we can slowly help kids to be their best selves www southernidahokids com Brian Olsen PhD Psychologist Kelsie Hendrickson PhD ABPP Paula Griffith MD Sponsored by
