BUSOGABUGLE Achieving the impossible Indefinite maintenance of boreholes B T s Flagship Program The PBR PAYMENT BY RESULTS I f at first you don t succeed try and try and try again So one s grandparents used to say Successful long term maintenance is the Holy Grail of rural water For several years B T struggled Then since June 2020 the PBR took off The number of communities enrolled has grown from 150 to 580 These are signed up and paid up members of the PBR our professionalised system of maintenance Each source belongs to a concession looked after by a professional mechanic He or she ensures that all their sources are working properly The usual problems encountered are easily managed ie bearings chains and buckets need replacement from time to time Stainless steel does not rust Our next challenge is to achieve 1 000 PBR boreholes We then would like a consultant to assess and write up the program This could be B T s biggest contribution to Rural Africa where often 50 of water sources are non functional B T is creating independence not dependence TESTIMONIALS THE PBR B T S FLAGSHIP PROGRAM Meet Wansolo George and B T S CDO Winnie George tells us We used to wait for the borehole to break down and then bump into peoples homes asking for large sums of money for repair and this caused havoc in the community as people raised insults to us the WUC members because they didn t have instant money As a result the pipes got extremely corroded snapped and fell into the well For six dreadful years we had to struggle searching for water in valley dams and sharing with cattle But now it has been seven months of consistent and effective functionality of our borehole supplying our community with safe clean water We ve had two incidents of break downs when our pump had rod disconnections but on both occasions the response from Busoga Trust and our mechanic was immediate I no longer have to sell my maize or bump into peoples homes asking for money to repair our borehole the as it was before due to poor management of the water source funds If it wasn t for the PBR program I am sure our borehole wouldn t be functioning now reported Wansolo George the Chairperson of the WUC BUSOGABUGLE SPRING EDITION P4
BUSOGABUGLE MORE PBR TESTIMONIALS Meet Kamanzi Josephine 40 years old and a proud mother of 4 children talking to Immaculate B T s CDO We no longer have to be woken up by the early morning knocks on our doors asking for instant money whenever our borehole broke down When we failed to raise the money the borehole could remain non functional for months We are so thankful to Busoga Trust for incorporating the PBR program in their scope of work It has meticulously solved all our water source management woes and ensured full time functionality of our borehole Whenever our borehole broke down there was immediate response from the WSP and Busoga Trust without hesitation It s been 10 months since the intervention by BT and we can t wait to extend our agreement with Busoga Trust You have indeed fulfilled your promise of timely efficient and effective service delivery She commented Mr Ntalo George William is 77 years old and a retired fish factory engineer For four years now he has been Chairman of the water source The water pump sits on his land near his cocoa and coffee garden Security was very difficult especially for young girls and kids due to distance but when it was resited security of both the water source and users is now good Also the caretaker lives near the source and he monitors all wrong activities at the source People no long misbehave Mr Ntalo explains that before joining the PBR program monthly payment was not easy People used to dodge payments and misbehave It s now easy to talk to fee defaulters as they are happy to save and the journey has been much smoother The challenge is sustainability of the program but our WSP gives us quick service whenever we call him and water user fees are well recorded BUSOGABUGLE SPRING EDITION P5
BUSOGABUGLE IT NEVER RAINS BUT IT POURS EXCEPT WHEN cows drinking borehole water bottle irrigation beehives IT DROUGHTS Right now the Horn of Africa is suffering a grievous drought Many pastoralists have seen all of their precious animals perish This drought is now afflicting parts of Uganda Buyende and Kayunga are badly hit but the 102 boreholes B T has restored in Kayunga and the 174 which B T has restored in Buyende are real life savers for both the people and their cattle which are drinking out of tanks placed by the boreholes Just imagine what that means to people for whom their animals represent their livelihoods Furthermore this drought has come just when B T is planting and selling fruit tree seedlings to counter deforestation We are in a race against time B T has decided we cannot afford to wait for the rains to come We must plant plant and plant again The fruit tree seedlings can be watered from the boreholes Then when they are sold they can then be watered by Bottle Irrigation President Musevini has been on Telly demonstrating how he waters his pineapples by bottle irrigation In the photo you can see B T s borehole water dripping from the bottle attached to the tree into its roots This cheap and effective solution is made possible with borehole water Water really is LIFE So far 5282 mostly fruit trees have been planted BUSOGABUGLE SPRING EDITION P6 Young boy waters his cows with borehole water
