Autocrosses, a Ladies Lunch and Fashion Show, Porsche Parade, and lots of drives. Check the calendar on the website at www.longhornpca.org for the most up-to-date information and plan to sign up early!Speaking of the ladies lunches, the social committee would like to plan some ladies activities if the interest is there. The PCA is not just for the guys and not just about cars! It's about the people rst and the amazing cars second! This would be an opportunity for the gals to meet and get involved in the club. Please let anyone on the social committee know if you have interest and/or ideas of activities that you'd like see. And if you are not on the primary member's membership as a Co-member - get signed up! This gives you an account number meaning you will recieve all correspondence from the region and national to keep you in the loop. It also helps our club by boosting our membership numbers. This is your club too - so let's all get involved! We need volunteers! Our club keeps going because of volunteers. No paid positions here - sorry! Immediately, we are looking for a new webmaster - someone who has experience with internet web experience and social media. If you are a novice or know a little bit about website design and like doing it but don't think you know enough - our current webmaster - John Barnes - will train! We're also looking for a new club historian. Our current historian - RJ Wilmoth - is retiring after 50 years as the keeper of national's history and LHR's history. This position is just for LHR history and there is a wonderful base to work from that so you'll just need to add current events. If you have any interest in either of these positions - talk to John or RJ or contact an ofcer or board member.Looking for LHR shirts - don't forget about the Longhorn Region webstore on the PCA website. https://www.pcawebstore.org/regions/LHNOn July 21 we will be hosting an informal NEW MEMBER’S SOCIAL at Stonewerks in the Vineyard from 6:30-8:00. This will be for new members and those that transferred into our region between July 2021 through July 2022.There will be appetizers and nger foods. The Longhorn Region’s ofcers and chairpeople will be there to talk about their roles in the club and the activities we sponsor! We will put the event on clubregistration.net for you to sign up just so we know how many to expect. LH ROUNDUP 3

President’s CornerBY JUD WALFORD, LONGHORN REGION PRESIDENTLH ROUNDUP 7I want to remind members that our monthly meetings continue to be the first Thursday of each month and we have some new venues including Longhorn Cafe in Boerne and La Hacienda de los Barios on Redland Road. These meetings are the best way to keep up to date on the club activities and visit with your fellow Porsche enthusiasts. Your Officers and Chairpersons use this forum to bring members up to date on activities and get input from members on club issues…plus a fun gathering, dinner and prizes! Our last Spring Autocross is June 4 at Tree of Life Church at noon. We will not have Autocross again until the Fall so sign up now. We have new equipment that is now refined and ready to go which will make the event much more efficient and fast.We also have a full schedule of drives this summer including the drive to Blanco and Ladies Flamingle Luncheon and Fashion Show at River Crossing Golf Club on June 11th. Another great drive is to Shiner Brewery on July 9th.Another note: We will have an Executive Council Meeting on June 30 via Zoom. This is an open meeting to all members for any topic to bring to the Executive Council (Board of Directors and all Chairpersons). Details on connecting to the meeting will be sent by email prior to the meeting. Please tune in with any subject you have to present to the council.I am pleased to report that we continue to add new members every month to the club, and many are starting off attending events and meetings. If you have not participated, please join us and get involved. Whether the active car events or socials, you will find fun people to interact with and who share your love of the Porsche brand. Some of the biggest and most important PCA events are upcoming including Porsche Parade in the Poconos in June and Werks Reunion in Monterey in August. Our Region will have representatives at both events and will be sharing their experiences with you.At our recent May monthly meeting at Pompei Italian Restaurant, representatives of Meals on Wheels shared some of the great activities they are involved in and made us all feel good about our $2500 donation to MOW from the Fiesta Challenge. At the next monthly meeting K-9 Warriors (our other $2500 Fiesta Challenge recipient) will make a presentation to the club on their activities with veterans at Longhorn Cafe in Boerne.I want to thank our members who have given their time and effort to planning and organizing so many excellent events on our calendar. I am particularly appreciative of our Roundup Editor, Shelley Matthews, who is tireless in her work on almost every event. Donna Clement has been busy also as Social Committee Chair with new venues and events for our monthly meetings, Christmas Party and a new Ladies event. Our Drive Committee has been very productive this year with many interesting and fun routes and venues. Thanks to Michael Sorbera and his very active committee. Michael was also instrumental in obtaining our new Autocross venue and James Bricken, Mike Matthews and Ignacio Fortuno have put many hours into upgrading our equipment for track events.I am also appreciative of our Board Members, James Bricken, Ignacio Fortuno and Chris Royter, who have been great partners with me in guiding the work and direction of the club. Another shout out to Chuck Bush, our Zone Representative, for his continued good work and advice.I mention all of these folks because without them there would be no Porsche activities or Club…that’s why we need you to get involved with some area that draws your interest as a committee member or even Chairperson or Officer. Our continued growth and interesting and fun activities depend on new involvement. Please contact any Chair or Board member with how you can be an active part of our great organization…I know you will be glad you did.

ZONE 5 NOTESZONE 5 NOTESCHUCK BUSH, ZONE 5 REP There is a lot happening in the PCA and Porsche world. If you are getting this newsletter, you have already taken the first big step to stay in touch, which is to keep your PCA membership valid. I was talking with a fellow Porsche owner at a gas station the other day (don’t we all do that?) and he mentioned that he wanted to get his car out more but had stopped receiving notifications of events. He acknowledged that his membership had probably lapsed and he needed to renew. I know that has happened to me over the years as I wondered why I hadn’t received a Panorama recently. When PCA added auto-renewal as an option, that helped me keep current! So why is that important? There are so many great events coming up that I want to keep up to date on:Sportscar Together Festival at Indianapolis Motor Speedway - Sept 2-4 Like last year’s event, the SCTF will focus on Porsche culture and Porsche racing, and coincidentally 2022 also marks 50 years of Porsche’s RS models. RS stands for “Rennsport,” which means racing in German, and those two letters when applied to a Porsche means that it’s one of the automaker’s highest-performing road cars. Starting with the 1973 911 Carrera RS (which came out in 1972), Porsche continues to build RS models, the latest being the 718 Cayman GT4 RS. If the plan to have the largest gathering of RS models in the world comes to fruition, you can bet it'll be a sight to behold.Treffen in Bend, Oregon - Sept 14-18 - registration opens June 29 Werks Reunion Monterey - Aug 19 - registration opens May 25 Parade in Palm Springs – June 2023 - details to follow. Rennsport Reunion VII - Sept 28 - Oct 1, 2023Rennsport Reunion is probably the biggest non- PCA Porsche event in the world, if not the biggest. Sponsored by Porsche and facilitated by PCA, this is a one of the coolest events around. Since it hasn’t been held since 2018, this one in 2023 is going to be hugely popular. I was fortunate enough to go in 2018 and my favorite part was watching this long line of 917 race cars headed out pit row to the track to race. I highly recommend going if you have never been. But I would book a hotel room sooner than later as I bet they will get hard to find. Ticket and other info will be available down the road.I hope you are having a great Spring and getting out and enjoying your Porsches. There are many of you going to Parade this Summer in the Pocono’s and I hope you have a great time!See you down the road. Chuck Bush Zone 5 RepLH ROUNDUP 11

Use of new headsets will help with the drives. Tom S will follow up on PCA insurance for upcoming dates. The goal is more organized and polished events with multiple group leaders and sweepers. There was general discussion on the progressive dinner drive and making one of the drives a Time and Distance run. Chris’ CrumbsChris’ Crumbs by Chris Royter, Secretary by Chris Royter, SecretaryEve of the EveTwas two nights before the Fiesta Challenge weekend when the club gathered for a monthly dinner at Pompeii. Cars were lined up outside while members feasted on Italian entrees and sipped Chianti wine. Rick and Cindy ElizondoJud started the April 7 meeting by recognizing our VP James Bricken and Zone 5 rep Chuck Bush. There was much anticipation and excitement about the upcoming weekend and Jud invited everyone to participate in the Concours, Rally and first of its kind charity Golf Tournament. James Bricken presented the first place Autocross award to Bill Dorsey in his Targa GTS. Second place went to James Bricken in his Carrera S and third to Peter Fisher in his GT3. It’s great to have autocross days back. If you have not participated in an autocross you need to give it a try. Great fun, exhilarating, safe and educational. Many thanks to the club members who put so much effort to make this event great.Bill Dorsey and James BrickenMember Pete Harrell gave a very interesting presentation on “GRIP – What it is, How to Change it and How to use it”. He recommends the book “Going Faster, Mastering the Art of Race Driving” by Skip Barber Racing School and written by Carl Lopez. Porsche excels in the way the car is made because it is “race derived equipment”. Pete discussed the nomenclature of oversteer, understeer and slip angle. He went into detailed analysis of tire contact, tire hardness and understanding balance of the car, and understanding how to calculate the “g force”. “Understanding balance and grip are keys to performance driving”. Drive tour chair Michael Sorbera reviewed several upcoming drives with a nice variety of destinations to come. Tour of the Twisties (out to Camp Wood and back), a drive to WWI Aerodrome Museum, and a trip to Shiner Bock Brewery to name a few. Also, in June, is the ladies “Flamingle” event at River Crossing Golf Club. Enjoy a great lunch, fashion show and a fundraiser for SJRC. Be sure to check the upcoming events calendar on the LHR website and use clubregistration.net to sign up.Another great night with new members joining the dinner. Jason and Leslie Read, recently moved here from Houston, ’14 Yellow 981 SFidencio Castillo showing off his new membership card. ’08 Silver Cayman SAndy and Tracy Wright. Chris’ CrumbsChris’ Crumbs by Chris Royter, Secretary by Chris Royter, Secretaryil quinto Maggio… AmigosOur May monthly meeting gathered to celebrate Cinco de Mayo at Pompeii Italian Grill. Jud provided a brief review of the successful Fiesta Challenge weekend in April. Everyone enjoyed the events, and we had a successful fundraiser for this year’s charities. More on that later. Then a presentation of Board members and introductions to the executive council team that provides invaluable support for the club functions. The current team that holds these responsibilities is listed on the LHR website under tab About Us. Jud emphasized that everyone in the club has a voice and the Board welcomes any suggestions input or ideas to discuss. We are always looking for ways to improve and new ideas. Our monthly meetings are the perfect forum for this and a great way to get involved. Any member is welcome to contact Board members through our website contact page to provide their thoughts. Autocross: James Bricken provided a recap of the recent Autocross and some of the issues that were worked out with the new timing equipment. This system will be a tremendous improvement over the old set up and should make the event run quicker and more accurate. Third place trophy went to Ignacio Fortuno, 2nd to Tom Orashan and James himself took 1st. Ignacio gave a huge thank you and club shout out to James and Mikel for all the effort to learn and run new equipment and software with just a few days before the run. Autocross events are coming up in May and June. Track Day: Scheduled Friday afternoon May 20 will be this year’s first track day. Harris Hill has increased track demand from its members so now we will run Friday afternoons this year. We hope this will change soon with a new track facility being constructed in Temple Tx. Still plenty of spots left for drivers to sign up for track day. Flamingle is coming up! Shelly Matthews of our Social committee gave an update on the Fundraiser/ Social event at River Crossing Country Club on June 11. Lunch, fashion show and support for the St. Jude’s Ranch for Children. Be sure to sign up on clubregistration.net. Fiesta Challenge: There was wonderful participation at Fiesta Challenge. Concours, afternoon Gimmick Rally and first of its kind charity Golf Tournament all provided great fundraising results for our 2022 charity groups. The raffle entries for prizes at the luncheon along with the mulligan sales for golf scramble really kicked it up this year. Ignacio made our $2500 donation presentation to the Meals on Wheels directors who attended the dinner. Anna Wimberly and Cynthia Thomas were very thankful for our support and provided a heartwarming overview of their operation and services. Nathan Whynott, our newest member joined the group tonight. He recently picked up a beautiful ’18 Black with Red Leather Panamera. With his new members hat in hand, Nathan looks forward to joining upcoming drives. Welcome to the club!Door Prize time: Laptop bag, hands free video frame, Treffen Porsche tote bag, backpacks, sunshades and soft sided coolers were given away. Our June 2nd dinner meeting will be at the Longhorn Café in Boerne. See you there. LH ROUNDUP 15

Meet the Longhorn - Tom & Claudia SchadeggTell us a bit about yourself/family/background? We both have our roots in Land of 10,000 Lakes. Claudia was born in the heart of Minnesota’s vacationland and home to Paul Bunyan – Brainerd. Tom grew up outside of Washington DC to parents who hailed from Minnesota and spent most of his summers on one of Brainerd’s area lakes. We met on a blind date one summer and have been together ever since. After finishing at the University of Minnesota, Tom joined the United States Air Force as a second-generation airman (his father flew B-17s during WWII). We served for 27 great years in a variety of flying (F-4, 15E, USN F-14B) and operations assignments around the world. Our son was born in the Philippines at Clark Air Base and was barely a year old when we had to evacuate because of the Mt Pinatubo eruption. We moved from Hawaii to Texas 10 years ago for our last assignment in the Air Force at Randolph AFB. Following the USAF, we spent time in the private sector securing foreign F-16s for civilian support to the Department of Defense. We have one son, Tommy, who is happily married and living in Atlanta; still awaiting grandchildren…lol. Tommy works at PEC Atlanta for Porsche Consulting and enjoys his ever-rotating company car; currently a Taycan. What year did you join PCA? 2018What other regions have you belonged to? NoneWhat Porsche(s) do you/have you owned? 2011 Carrera White Boxster Spyder (Previous) 2021 Racing Yellow 718 Spyder (Current)What’s your favorite Porsche memory? Tom and Tommy driving home to Texas from Seattle after our first Porsche purchase, a pre-owned CPO 2011 Boxster Spyder. What an incredible week on the road on some of America’s most scenic roads. After an exhilarating, and exhausting, 3000 miles in the Light Weight Bucket Seats we arrived home and Claudia jumped in for a quick Hill Country romp to see what this “Porsche stuff” was all about. We’ve been fans ever since! What LHR events do you enjoy most? We enjoy talking to and learning about our fellow Longhorn Region enthusiasts so just about any event, if it involves driving even better! We had a great time at this year’s Fiesta Challenge and participated in both days of Concours, Rally, Golf and met some wonderful members. What’s your favorite Porsche? That’s easy, we love the mid-engine Spyder. The streamliners on the back are such a unique styling element. What non-Porsche activities do you enjoy/participate in? Touring around the Texas Hill Country and visiting the unique shops, distilleries, breweries, and having world class BBQ. Along the way we’ll play some rounds of golf or hike in one of the beautiful Texas State Parks. We developed a fondness for Bourbon after a trip to Kentucky so we have fun looking for bottles, going to distilleries, or talking with other Bourbon lovers. 16 LH ROUNDUP

Drive to Laurel Tree Article by Mike VriesengaOn Saturday, May 14, about 50 folks from Longhorn PCA enjoyed a road trip through the Hill Country to the Laurel Tree restaurant in Utopia. After leaving the Lowes parking lot, the driving didn’t become interesting until we left Ingram. Sharp-eyed drivers would notice the Texas version of Stonehenge as we passed. Slipping onto Hwy 39, we enjoyed one of the prettier roads in the Hill Country, with overhanging trees, dammed pools from the river, weekend retreats and camps. I think of this stretch as “dancing with the Guadalupe” because we cross back and forth over the river, while the Porsche pivots on its hips below me. No Macarena for me, thank you. Both the sightseeing and the driving are a pleasure. Abandoning the Guadalupe River, Highway 39 straightens out a little, and the tree canopy thins. Clearly Bandera County received more rain than San Antonio, because the grass was green, and wildflowers, like White Prickly Poppy, showed off as we passed. Not that I want cows grazing along the road, but the White Prickly Poppy survives partly because cattle won’t eat it, even in drought. A left turn onto Highway 187 brought our Porsches onto a ridge heading south, with panoramic views and the opportunity to stretch the cars’ legs when the road was empty. Eventually we passed the entrance to Lost Maples, then followed the Sabinal River towards Utopia.Lunch at the Laurel Tree is always a treat, and this was no exception. We gathered around tables of about 10 to share stories and enjoy the food. All the men at my table ordered the crab, while all the women ordered chicken. There is a lesson there, but I don’t know what it is. Peach tea and ice cream for dessert made for a very pleasant meal. Strolling the grounds afterward we could see a few of the red poppies the grounds are known for, but the real eye-catchers were the Model A Fords we passed earlier. Pretty, but not as pretty as a Porsche.LH ROUNDUP 17

MOTORSPORT RE-RAMBLINGS BY JACK MERRELL Cones and Flags…… Little things are importantThe last track day indicated that at least several drivers were not clear on these two items so here we go with a review.CONES: Cones are strategi-cally placed on the track to help you safely negotiate the corners. There are at least three cones at each corner. They are the turn-in cone, the cone marking the turn's apex, and the track-out cone. The turn-in cone marks that point on the track where you should have completed any braking required and are initiating turning the car into the turn. It will be located on the outside edge of the track away from the direction of the turn. When I say you will have completed your braking and have achieved the entry speed for the turn, I don’t mean for you to take your foot off the brake pedal. Continue very light braking not so much to continue slowing your car but to maintain the balance of the car over the front wheels to improve turning. This is known as trail braking. As you continue into the turn you will see the next cone, the “apex” cone which is located on the inside of the track and approximately halfway through the turn. Its exact position is based on the specifics of the turn. You want to drive at the apex cone posi-tion as close to the inside of the track (turn) as you can. Why? As you approach the apex point in a turn lateral g’s are at a max and are trying to push your car to the outside of the turn. By being close to the inside you have room to spare and should not go off the track should you lose some traction. As you reach the apex point in a turn you should move your right foot from the brake pedal to the accelerator and slowly start accelerating the vehicle. NEVER just coast through a turn, you want to either be braking or accelerating and thus in control of the vehicle. The last cone in a turn is the “track out“ cone. It is positioned on the outside edge of the track relative to the direction of the turn you have just negotiated and you should be close to it as you accelerate down the next straight. By driving a turn with these cones as keys you will negotiate the turn safely, smoothly and maintain the maximum speed through the turn without skidding. Sometimes you may see other cones on the track especially on long straights and these are just to remind you of the correct side of the track to be on prior to the next turn.On your next track day watch your leader during the opening “follow the leader” session and see how close he adheres to these reference cones. 18 LH ROUNDUP

FLAGS: These form the only means corner workers and the safety steward can communicate with a driver. It is each driver’s responsibility to see, acknowledge and abide by the meaning of each flag displayed. Here they are: These flags apply to all cars on the track. GREENGREEN: indicates the start of a session and that the track is safe for you to continue.YELLOW -YELLOW - Caution and you should continue but at a slower pace, as there is something on the track, debris, safety vehicle, etc. that requires caution. RED -RED - this means all cars come safely to a stop, off the driving line and away from the exit of a turn – i.e.: acknowledge the flag and slow to a stop approx-imately 1/3 to 1/2 way down the straight to make room for cars behind you. Remain in your car and stopped until told to do otherwise. There is a serious issue on the track. WHITE -WHITE - signals this is the last lap before the checkered flag will be displayed. CHECKCHECKEREDERED - the session is over, and you should drive around and into the pits at a slower “cool down” pace. There are several flags that are pointed at spe-cific vehicles and that vehicle should acknowl-edge and take the proper action.BLUEBLUE with YELLOW STRIPE -YELLOW STRIPE -: You have a faster car close behind you, on the next straight let him pass. (Editor’s note - picture on the right shows blue with orange stripe, LHR’s flag has a yellow stripe.)BLACKBLACK - When this flag is displayed to you it means we want you to slow, turn on your flashers and continue the lap off the driving line and come into the pits. One of the safety people has seen either something wrong with your car or observed something in your driving style that needs correcting. Someone will meet you in the staging area, resolve the issue and get you back on the track. There you have it, little things that every driver needs to know and, in the case of flags, abide by to contribute to a safe track day. Drive safe and enjoy the learning experience offered in a controlled environment at each of our track events.Jack is now retired from writing regular columns in the Roundup although he may write a column now and then. 20 LH ROUNDUPFiesta Challenge ARTICLE BY JUD WALFORDSaturday, April 9 & 10 marked 40 years of the Longhorn Region holding the Fiesta Challenge and what a way to celebrate all those years of our biggest annual event! A new record attendance at our Concours competition was set with 32 cars entered in 6 classes. Some 60 plus PCAers in attendance enjoyed every Porsche era from 356B to the 2022 Taycan. As always, the Fiesta Challenge donates the proceeds of the event to local charities, this year K-9 for Warriors and Meals on Wheels.Cars began arriving at 8 am and judging started at 10:30. The cars were judged as “Clean & Shine” covering exterior, interior, and trunks. Judges awarded trophies in 6 different classes and 5 cars earned a 150 point score out of 155 with judges picking Donovan Butter’s 1961 356 B as Best of Show.Box lunches were enjoyed while there was a raffle for premium prizes donated by The Porsche Center and Hagerty Insurance that raised over $1000 and gave away a dozen quality Porsche themed items.Immediately following, Mike Vriesenga led some 15 Porsches on a Gimmick Rally that ended in Lukenbach, Texas. For all of the years the Fiesta Challenge has been celebrated in the Longhorn Region, there has not been a Golf Tournament so Fiesta Challenge Chair Jud Walford decided the club needed a new event. This turned out to be a good decision as our first Fiesta Challenge Scramble was an exciting and fun event as 38 players in 10 Teams vied for the top prize. The event was held at the prestigious Quarry Golf Club Sunday after the events at The Porsche Center even though we were competing with Fiesta, Palm Sunday, and The Masters, we had a well attended and super fun tournament. There was intense competition as five different teams were in close competition with Bill Dorsey's group taking first prize with a 12 under par 59! There were 3 other teams close behind as the Walford Group, Clement Group and Jablecki Group all tied for 2nd with 11 under par 60s. The event raised over $1000 for our charities K-9 for Warriors and Meals on Wheels. All agreed this should be an annual event and we should add another Tournament to the Fall schedule. Watch for it and register to have a great outdoor day at the Golf Course. As a result of proceeds from all events and individual member donations, Longhorn Region will donate $2500 each to K-9 for Warriors and Meals on Wheels.

What is a Gimmick Rally? A. A chance to get to know your partner better B. A test of your navigational skills C. An opportunity to have fun D. All of the above! If you’ve ever wanted to do a PCA Gimmick Road Rally and wondered what it is like, let me tell you. It’s a lot of fun plus a little bit of skill and determination and a chance to spend some one-on-one time with your partner, be that person your spouse, your child/parent or a friend. The Road Rally requires a team comprised of a driver and a navigator. At the start of the rally, the Rally Director will give you a set of clues/questions that you use to answer questions pertaining to things you see along your route. It’s kind of like a scavenger hunt along a pre-determined route. I did my first Rally with one of my friends. She and I did not have a clue what we were getting into but ended up winning third place. Since then, my son, wanting to get in on the action, has signed up with me. The first time we competed together, we took fifth place with him as the navigator and me as the driver. We quickly determined that he was the better driver and I, the better navigator. We took second place under this new arrangement. This year we were so excited to get first place! Want to know a few of our secrets?Clear your odometer at the start and check to make sure it is synchronized to match that of the Rally Director. Don’t worry if you forget. You can always set it at the next marker but then you have to constantly do math. Second thought, don’t forget. Many of the Rally Director’s clues will tell you when to turn based on mileage; street names/highway numbers may or may not be given (i.e. turn at 3.3 miles at the tree that looks like a bear…you get the idea). Instructions/clues vary by Rally Director. The Longhorn Region has several very talented course planners and some folks like Mike Vriesenga, and Chuck and Susie Bush who have great senses of humor when planning their clues. On this year’s route called the “Church Tour”, some of my personal favorites included: Fill in the blank…Best __________ _____________ in Texas was answered by Little Smokehouse (found at the turn from Old 471 towards Quihi) – Bet you were thinking of a movie title?, Date on cornerstone of Lutheran Church in Quihi, Sign on road featuring John Wilkes Booth’s doctor…SIGN read “Mud on Road” and our favorite, “unusual piece of equipment not expected in area” was answered by “Snowmobile”. We joked about buying it and bringing it along for bonus points. Upon closer inspection of this unusual equipment in the field, we found that it was a “wet bike” or a motorcycle used on water. Still unusual.Don’t take yourselves too seriously. It is a gimmick rally and not a time/speed/distance rally so a little cushion in the “oops, let’s go back and try that again arena”. About 1 hour into our last competition, we realized that we missed two questions. We made a strategic decision to back track 20 miles to find the answers to the clues which meant we were going to do a round trip of 40 miles and cost us a little time. We turned around, found the answers to 2 clues, and continued on our way and came in about 30 minutes behind everyone else at the end. It didn’t matter however because we were told at the start of the rally that we would be judged based on the number of correct answers. The team with the most correct answers would win; in the event of a tie, then the team with the travel time closest to the average time 22 LH ROUNDUPFiesta Challenge - Rally Article and photos by Patricia Broyles

travelled by the group would win. We ended up clearly having the most correct answers but not the fastest time.Watch for livestock. Many of our rally courses take us along the road less traveled by and may include cattle guards and livestock both domestic and wild. We saw plenty of cattle, sheep and goats/goat kids and a wild turkey!Don’t get frustrated. Don’t give up. About halfway thru the clues, we were struggling and discussed giving up, going straight to the end, and getting an early start on the refreshments with other PCA members. We decided to persevere and were happier for it. These things happen. Remember it’s all just for fun! And there’s good company and refreshments waiting for you at the end! Here's information on the WetBike in case you feel like you have to have one! Not made by Porsche but hey, they can't all be winners!More Concours CarsPhotos by Mike MatthewsLH ROUNDUP 23

Autocross Article by James Bricken For starters I would like to apologize for the asco this event was. Teething pains along with hardware issues made for a perfect storm. It also didn't help that about a third of the entrants didn't show up, so again we were shorthanded when we needed extra personnel.Speaking of which: I want to thank all those people who volunteered to do extra work even though they were not running. This includes (but not limited too) Matt B, Jo, Lester, Mike S, and Joseph. Special thanks go out to Mike M for sacricing his own runs to deal with the timing, Chuck and Suzie for dealing with the trailer and equipment, and Federico for once again designing an excellent course. One thing that did go well was the bar code reader actually works. But we need a little more practice with it. Turns out it goes into sleep mode after a short time and you have to trigger it to wake it up (not a big deal). Keep in mind that once a bar code is issued it should stay with you (hopefully) for every event. If you use loaner helmets you will have to get a new bar code for each event or buy your own helmet (recommended). If you buy a new helmet or your bar code is otherwise damaged we can always issue a new bar code. Also, if you have two accounts on clubregistration and you use the wrong account to sign up for the event your bar code will not be valid. Your bar code is associated with your unique clubregistration account number (just as your car number is) and not with your name. What became apparent early on was that the nish line timer was malfunctioning. By the end of the day we were convinced we would need to replace some equipment. But last night I accidently happened across the manual and it says the maximum range is 250-300 feet (usually overestimated) and we were probably pushing our luck. Now it occurs to me that cars stopping in front of the timing tent were also part of the problem (that was when we would usually have a problem) as was the fact that we had the timer/display standing upright so we could read it which means the antenna was horizontal (also not optimal). The solution here I think is to get an external antenna which will improve range and line of sight. So, lets gets to the results: unfortunately as everybody knows, it was mostly not useable. Some people got as many 8-9 runs, while some got as few 5 (me included). I tried to give 2 more runs to the rst group because of timing issues. Of the runs that got counted, some people only got one and some got 6. Sorry, but that's just the way it was and we are sure to do better next time. I had the event trophies with me but we had to audit the results to eliminate all the erroneous times and it took several hours to gure out how to do that. So, in the future I think we should have many of our issues resolved. Hopefully before the next event we will have a new printer, bluetooth mouse, a new antenna and maybe a 2nd tripod for the second display. The BOD met recently and we hope to have new autocross t-shirts available soon (initially free we hope) and we hope to be giving away other swag at the events (must be present to win). Registration is now open so sign up early for the June 4th event. I will have the trophies at the next meeting. If you can’t make it let me know and I will see what I can do.Let me know if you have any questions, concerns, or suggestions.26 LH ROUNDUP

Our sponsors!!Drive to the Twisties Article by Michael Sobera and Photos by Sherry SorberaLH ROUNDUP 29What an awesome day of driving some of the twistiest roads in Texas! We all gathered at CVS in Helotes and had some good fellowship time before heading out. We had 13 cars and 19 Porsche fanatics leave for the drive at 8:30 A.M.Had some little rain showers as we headed up to Bandera where we stopped at the Shell station on the main street. After a short break we were off! We took the “southern” route on 470 to Utopia, then on to 83, then north to Leakey. We stopped at the Bear Meat Market for a short break. Then we headed out on 337, one of the “twisted sister” legs to Camp Wood. Unfortunately, we encountered a very long and slow motorcycle club, so we took the opportunity to enjoy the scenery! We turned around in Camp Wood and headed back to Leakey, this time no slow motorcycle clubs! When we were coming into Leakey we passed over 30 Ferraris going in the other direction!Stopped at the Stripes station on 83 in Leakey for a quick break before heading on 337 east to Vanderpool, then on to Medina where we stopped for lunch at Love Creek Apple Store! As always, the food was great, but more importantly the fellowship was great! And the Ferrari club showed up at the same restaurant! There were lots of great cars to look at! Special shout out to Lester for being the sweeper and Shaun for helping relay messages from Lester to the lead car! Great job everyone!
