We’ve had a couple of events re-scheduled due to very cold temps and icy weather. And being in the south, ice is not something most Texans are used to dealing with. But hopefully, she will release her grip and send the cold weather back up north where it belongs! Our calendar is quickly lling up with drives, socials, and track days. In addition, we have a new venue for autocross so they are squeezing in some more dates! We’re also adding some ladies events to help spread the fun for everyone. So keep an eye on our website calendar for the most up-to-date information.A new Social Committee has been formed and the rst event is “Let’s Flamingle” - a ladies luncheon and fashion show. We’ve got some fun activities planned and we’re still looking for members to join our committee! This charitable social will also benet SJRC in Bulverde. (See page 13 - Socially Speaking - for more detailed information.) Let Donna or Shelley know if you’re interested in helping out!If you ordered nametags from me and have not received them yet, let me know. I’ve been bringing them to the meetings and events but still have a lot ready to go. I can mail them to you if needed. They are $12 each.Sadly, this is the last regular column (check out page 16) of Motorsport Ramblings by Jack Merrell. Jack has written this bi-monthly column for the Roundup for 10+ years. He has covered everything from winterizing your Porsche to what the ags mean at DEs; from what tires to buy to getting your car ready for a DE or autocross. If it has to do with Porsches, Jack has probably written a column about it. I personally want to thank Jack, for not only his tireless efforts that he put into writing his columns, but also to the club in general. We’re a better club, and hopefully better drivers, because of him!In the last 2 years, everyone has gotten used to not going out much. But as we nally get into a somewhat normal post-Covid schedule and the calendar is lling with events, I realize how much I’ve missed seeing people and it’s so good to see everyone! But, I’m not seeing as much participation in our events as we had pre-Covid. These events take a lot of work for the people planning them so I hope everyone will get back into the routine of coming back to the meetings, drives, autocrosses, socials, and track days. I realize it will be a slow transition and I certainly want everyone to be safe. And of course, we will continue to monitor the Covid restrictions and cancel as needed. Hope to see you all soon!!LH ROUNDUP 3

President’s CornerBY JUD WALFORD, LONGHORN REGION PRESIDENTLH ROUNDUP 7What a start to 2022! We are just in March and we have already had several drives, an autocross and resumed monthly meetings. An exciting beginning to what promises to be a record year for Longhorn Region activity. After a year of searching, we finally have an Autocross venue. Many thanks to Michael Sorbera for his work in procuring the lot at Tree of Life Church. We look forward to a long and pleasant association with the church. The lot is large and in good condition and we already have 4 approved dates. Our first was March 12 and the layout and amenities are fabulous. There is covered parking for the cars, restrooms and lots of room for Federico to design a track. We are purchasing a new computer, we have new radios, and all should add up to be more fun and efficient events. Our calendar is filling up with Monthly Meetings and drives every month. The Fiesta Challenge, more Drives and a Track Day in May. Our Social Committee is working on a Ladies Luncheon and Fashion Show, and we will have a New Member social soon. Speaking of New Members, please take a look at my article on the PCA events in this issue. If you are thinking of entering an event, the article should give you some insight into the details. We passed a milestone this month with over 550 primary members. The great part of that is that we are seeing new members at every event…keep up the good work!We have had some trouble with our Longhorn app so go to our website longhornpca.org as an alternative.I have to remind you of our most important event of the year, The Fiesta Challenge. If you have not registered, please get involved in one of the events. On Saturday, April 9th at the Porsche Center we have a concours and a silent auction, lunch and a Rally to follow. Our first Fiesta Challenge Golf Tournament is at 1p.m. Sunday, the 10th, at Quarry Golf Club. This is a Scramble, which means every player in your group hits every shot and you pick the best on each. It is a fun tournament, and as are all events, for the benefit of K9 Warriors and Meals on Wheels. As usual, all events can be reserved at clubregistration.net As I am sure you are aware, Covid surges are still happening around the world. We all remember the brakes the pandemic put on our activities and we don’t want to return to those times. Please take precautions. Many of our activities are outdoors, but on the indoor meetings we encourage attendees to be vaccinated. I have met many new members this year and many members who are just beginning to get involved. We all do not have to do Autocross, Concours, Track Days or Drives…but we can all show up to our Monthly Meetings if for nothing else but to talk about our cars. We are a club of 550 primary members and only about 50-60 are taking part in any activity. I promise you that if you come to one meeting you will be hooked on the club and the people. I look forward to meeting you and having fun with your Porsche. If you come to a meeting and tell me you read this, I will give you a Porsche gift!

8 LH ROUNDUPWhat are these events all about?By Jud WalfordI recently encountered one of our members in a store parking lot and he asked me if we shouldn’t give some better explanation on what each Porsche Club activity entailed. He pointed out that new members may not know what happens at a Concours or an Autocross and are reluctant to sign up because they don’t know what to expect. So as my dad used to say “Dawn comes to the swamp”. Consequently, here is some information by activity on what happens and what to expect. Now, after you know all this, I hope you will join us in one of these activities.Concours The basic definition is "a concours is a competition of classic motor vehicles in which prizes are awarded for those in the best original condition”. Within Porsche Club, we have several different kinds of Concours. Some judge only the obvious interior and exterior condition. Others get more serious, judging the engine and undercarriage. Longhorn Region Concours usually has “Clean & Shine” competition, which judges the interior (including trunk) and exterior of the car. We have several during the year and judging is divided by type and model of cars (i.e. 911, Cayman, Boxster, 356, etc.).The older the car the more leeway is given in judging. Prizes are given for each class and a prize is given for “Best of Show”. The great part of Concours is that even if you don’t win, you have gotten your car in primo condition. It is an easy way to get involved in Porsche competition and fun to show off your car and see other Porsche models at their best.Autocross If you have ever had an urge to be a race car driver (who hasn’t) autocross can give you a taste of that experience. Now don’t get nervous, it’s not really racing, no other car on the course and speeds are slow (35 mph or so) but a good test of your finely engineered Porsche through twists and turns around plastic cones. Only about a minute around the course so doesn’t tax your nerves. It is a timed event, but the fun is there even if you are not fast through the course (I can attest as I was last in the most recent autocross). We have a fabulous venue, a large parking lot with a variety of potential layouts and a team of veteran instructors who will ride with you to help you around the course if you desire. We will even have a Novice event this year, but you don’t have to wait as at every event there is room and beginners are welcome. Drives and Rallies If you enjoy cruising through the countryside and stopping for lunch with friends, these are the events for you. Typically lasting 5 or 6 hours with a stop for lunch, these excursions around the San Antonio area will let you discover roads you never knew existed, even for us natives. With some 15 drives throughout the year, there are a variety of destinations, interesting towns, or attractions. We even have had a 3- and 4-day drive to Big Bend National Park. Rallies are fun for the family also as they have gimmicks with clues on where to go or timed events where you are given

Page 9

LH ROUNDUP 9guides to each section and the winner matches as close as possible to the time and your co-pilot is essential (not speeding).Drivers Education For those who desire to get on a real racetrack and discover what your Porsche can do, we have a couple of Track Days at Harris Hill Raceway in San Marcos. These too are not races, not even timed and cars are on the track in classes of experience. Again, we have instructors who will give you insights into the track and car handling. The feeling is exhilarating, and you can go at your own pace. Social Events * Weekly Lies and Fries luncheon every Wednesday at Stonewerks in the Vineyard is fun place to meet. * We have Monthly Meetings on the first Thursday of every month at a local restaurant with presentations from officers, committee chairpersons, sponsors, and club members. We also have some door prizes at each event. * Our annual Picnic and Concours is a great outdoor gathering where all bring their favorite dish to share and the club provides the basic staple. There is also a very informal Concours in which all cars are included.* Our annual Christmas Party is the formal affair of the year at a classy venue with great food and drink and Awards night. Members and guests enjoy a fabulous meal and the door prizes are special. Part of the admission is a toy for Toys for Tots.* We also have a New Members social during the year to welcome and orient our newest Porsche friends.Other Events: The Club is very involved in the community and have special events to raise funds for local charities. Fiesta Challenge each year is a 3-event weekend that raised over $15,000 for San Antonio needy families last year. We also have a fun Halloween activity with a Trunk-n-Treat event at Boysville/Girlsville home for displaced children. Porsches are lined up all over the grounds and the kids get their treats out of our trunks.Other Region and National Events In addition to our region events, other regions in close proximity to us have their own events in which we can participate. National events are really special with the largest being Porsche Parade which moves to a different locale every year and Werks Reunion Monterey and Werks Reunion Amelia Island. These events draw Porsche enthusiasts from all over the country and bring over 800 cars to participate in drives, autocross and concours as well as multiple social events. There are also several Treffen (think mini–Porsche Parade) driving events around the country. Officers and Committee Chairs If you would like more information on any activity please contact one of our officers or committee chairpersons and they will be happy to share their knowledge and advice on your participation. Come join us... as we say in PCA “It's not just the cars, It's the People”.

ZONE 5 NOTESZONE 5 NOTESCHUCK BUSH, ZONE 5 REP We just finished the Zone 5 President’s meeting recently. Thanks to the Cimarron region for hosting it in lovely Tulsa, OK. The Region President’s meeting is an annual event where we gather to collaborate on how to make the club work better for our members. With 12 regions in Zone 5, it is a great opportunity to get an update on PCA and share ideas amongst the regions. Zone 5 is blessed with some very large regions as well as small ones and they all have unique challenges and opportunities. Growth in PCA remains strong, as it has even through the last few years with COVID. As we are hopefully on the backside of this pandemic, we have many new members without a sense of what is a normal schedule of events for our regions. As we ramp back up, take the opportunity to get out there and explore all PCA has to offer. While get togethers remain very popular, tours, autocrosses, DE’s, rally’s, and concours are all fun opportunities to enjoy your car while socializing with fellow club members. If you are a new member or haven’t participated in a while, get out there and try something new!One of the best kept secrets of being in the Porsche club is volunteering. There is nothing like the satisfaction of being involved in the running of events and seeing them go off well. There is also no better way to get to know folks in the club and to make new friends. Many hands make light work so there is always something for you to do that will help out the region while also improving your experience. One of my favorite jobs is working the grid at the autocrosses. It is wonderful to talk with folks that are so excited about their runs and driving the track. Being a timer at a concours is also a great job for a new person- you are on the judging team, you get a close look at beautiful cars, you can chat with the owners about their “babies” and the only skill required is being able to use a watch. There are so many fun jobs and with all of us contributing, it is very easy.We have many, many events coming up this year. Regional, Zone wide, and National. Check the PCA national website, your regional website, or just read the emails you get from PCA and your region. I hope to see you out there this year!Chuck Bush Zone 5 PCA12 LH ROUNDUP

Contact Shelley thru our LHR website (click tab About Us>Board>Email and select send to Membership Chair and Roundup Editor.James Bricken reviewed the new autocross venue at the Tree of Life Church on I35. It was stressed several times that participants can not arrive on site before noon. There are church events going on before us and we must not interfere with them or we could lose the venue . Staging of the lap runs was reviewed and how to make things more efficient and accurate. We want to encourage first timers to join the fun. These are not high-speed events and courses are laid out with safety in mind. With instructor ride along and no pressure on lap times it is a great way to learn about car control. LHR has several loaner helmets available too. Event fee is $35 so sign up on Club Registration. When you arrive, sign the waiver, follow parking directions, go through Tech inspection, and help out as needed. Goal is to HAVE FUN and drive. MOTORSPORT RAMBLINGS BY JACK MERRELL16 LH ROUNDUPAll good things must come to an end and so it is with me penning the Motorsport Ramblings. I started this almost 15 years ago when I revitalized the Regions autocross program and continued when I introduced a tracking program. Both have grown and provided enjoyment to many. It was not without help that we got it done. People like Ron McAtee and Bob Jones who were there every step of the way. RJ and Linda who were mainstays as was Ron Shade until he passed and Steve Farnham. Others joined in and made the programs even better. That said, it’s time to pass the baton to younger and more energetic members. James Bricken is doing a great job continuing the Autocross adventure and he is now picking up the tracking program. Mikel Matthews and Chuck Bush have also stepped in and provided consistent help. Others are contributing and that’s what makes a successful, safe, and enjoyable program I’m not going away completely and when my responsibilities allow, I will be there to help. The club needs someone to step up and take over this page in the Round Up. Shelley does a great job with our newsletter but she needs help with members providing material. So, there you have it, short and sweet. Again, I want to thank everyone that has helped me over the years I could not have done it alone. I would ask that you give James the same or better support as he works hard to make good programs even better. Drive safe and enjoy the great pleasure of exercising your Porsche.

Meet the Longhorn - Rick & Cindy ElizondoTell us about yourself and family. I was born and raised in Houston. Out of high school I worked with a plumbing crew and worked up to a licensed plumber which paid for a couple of years of college. I graduated with a BA in marketing from UTSA then worked and retired after 27 years in pharmaceutical sales. During that time, I met my wife Cindy who is a preschool teacher and she has been my reason for the past 20 years. We have one daughter Emily who is a Physical Therapist and a certified K9 rehab specialist. She lives with her husband Tim in New Braunfels. My 911 has been my childhood dream and the year before I retired I bought it as a retirement gift to myself. What year did you join PCA? I joined PCA in 2020 at the suggestion of my sales rep at Porsche of Oklahoma.Other regions that I’ve belonged to? None. What Porsche do you have? A 2020 Aventurine Green 911 Carrera. What’s your favorite Porsche memory? Seeing it in my garage the morning after I brought it home. I was very blessed to find this car because at that time the waiting list was about six to eight months long. Then COVID hit and everything shut down so I thought getting my Porsche was another couple of years out now so I just put it out of my mind. But it seemed like the stars aligned in my favor because I found a 992 that was 95% my exact build on the showroom floor at Porsche of Oklahoma. I called the them, told the rep I was very interested in the car and after a conversation with the sales rep and the manager I sent them a picture of my plane ticket to Oklahoma along with a picture of the insurance card for that car to show them I was committed. I flew to Oklahoma and met them at the dealership on a Tuesday and drove it home the next Wednesday. I know I was very fortunate because not only did I have my Porsche during the most challenging times but I also bypassed that incredibly long waiting list. What LHR events do you enjoy the most? Cindy and I have enjoyed every event so far. The people are so friendly, and everyone has a story of an event or a drive. The camaraderie is the most enjoyable.Whats your favorite Porsche? The one in my garage. What non-Porsche activities do you enjoy/participate in? Cindy sings at church, I fly RC planes and I volunteer at the Kingsbury Aerodrome which will be a LHR drive in May. Cindy likes scrapbooking and both of us like movies, Downton Abbey, drives and food. I like lots of food. We also like to travel, ride bicycles, and enjoy our dog and cat.LH ROUNDUP 17

The Los Angeles Literature Meet and Toy Show Article and Photos by Chuck BushOne of the biggest annual events in the Porsche enthusiast’s world is the LA Literature, Toy and memorabilia show for Porsches and Vintage VW’s (mostly Porsche). The show is an annual event that includes several days of local shop tours and the Saturday main event at the LAX Hilton Hotel that has over 300 tables displaying all kinds of Porsche memorabilia and parts. Sponsored by Stoddard’s imported parts from Ohio, I think this show is a relic from the days before you could find anything on the internet. But as you know, there is nothing like seeing and touching stuff so the show continues to flourish. There were so many items on display from posters to vintage plate frames, to Porsche 356 switches and knobs. Many of the vendors that you know and love if you are restoring a Porsche were there with big displays including Stoddards, PMB brakes, Restoration design, Autobahn interiors, and so many more. I don’t think it is something I’ll go to every year, but it is up there with Rennsport Reunion as a bucket list Porsche event. The other aspect of the show is the shop tours that go on in conjunction with the show. Probably the biggest social event of the year, all the major shops in LA open their doors for visitors to come see what they do. You can take a bus or drive yourself as we did, but they are spread out all over LA and it quite the undertaking to get to them all. The shop tours were spread out over four days, and since I only had the one day, I missed some of them, but it was quite the sensory overload of very cool Porsches and restoration shops. Shops opening their doors included: LA Dismantler, Sierra Madre Collection, Callas Rennsport, Klasse 356, Wilhoit Restoration, Benton Performance, CarParc, European Collectibles, and several more. If you have been around Porsches for a while, you will recognize those names as some of the most famous in the business and it helps explain why Southern California is the hub of Porsche restoration and modernization. I was very happy to have had the opportunity to attend, and highly recommend it.If this is something you are interested in, it always happens the last weekend of Feb. You can find information at the website (https://lalitandtoyshow.com) and plan your trip for next year!Shop ToursLit and Toy Show18 LH ROUNDUP

On Saturday, May 7th Rick Elizondo will be leading a drive to the Pioneer Flight Museum which is located at the Old Kingsbury Aerodrome Airport in Kingsbury, Texas. Come dressed with comfortable walking shoes and be ready for a day of fun!The not-for-profit 501c3 Pioneer Flight Museum organization is dedicated to the restoration, preservation and reproduction of aircraft and vehicles from the beginning of flight to the early years of World War II.Fly-Ins are held twice a year at the airport and provide the main source of income for the museum to continue to preserve and teach future generations of a history that is fast being lost. Planes from the museum will be available to view along with other planes that “fly-in” from all over the country and welcome the chance to share their aircraft for a good cause. In addition to the variety of planes, restored and replica vehicles will be available for viewing and in some cases - rides. Volunteers in period costumes will be on hand to share their knowledge and assistance with visitors to the museum. One aircraft from the collection is the Fokker Dr1 (see picture above). This was the most respected and feared airplane of World War I. You might know it better as the plane flown by the German flying ace Baron Richthofen or The Red Baron. Another plane available for viewing will be the tri-plane (see below), known as the Dridecker (3 winged) plane or Dr1. My favorite areas of the museum collection are the library, which with enough donations, will hopefully soon be housed in a climate-controlled area for all to enjoy the rich history of these eras for years to come, and the trench art. Trench art is an artform created by the servicemen in the trenches during lulls in battle. They would take bullet casings and other items available to them and create the most beautiful art pieces from items of war. This will be a day to showcase the collection and to raise funds to continue with the work that is ongoing at the museum. Volunteers and donations are gratefully accepted. Owners and museum operators, Roger and Charlotte, welcome visitors for tours most days but recommend calling prior to arriving at the airport (830) 639-4162. Both Charlotte and Roger are accomplished pilots and enjoy sharing their love of the history and museum collections with visitors to the Pioneer Flight Museum of Kingsbury, Texas. The serpentine belt which is removed.←Water pump over old one out and thermostat←Under car looking at engine→Engine access←↑New water pump and gasketLH ROUNDUP 27Replacing a water pump on a BoxsterArticle and Photos by Chuck BushAs I was driving my 1999 Boxster recently, I started hearing a little extra whirring from the engine compartment. I figured it was one of the serpentine belt pully bearings going bad, and I would check it out when it got worse. Well, it didn’t take long to get worse, and a low coolant light came on. When I checked under the car, it was leaking anti-freeze. A quick check pointed at the water pump as the problem. Once I started looking into it, I found that water pump failure on cars over 80K miles is fairly common. One of the nice things about the early model Boxsters - 986 and 987 - is that you can actually work on them yourself if you are so inclined. A YouTube video and the 101 Projects for your Boxster gave me an overview of how to do the job, so I got to work. (I like the video by “Burner’s cars- how to replace the water pump on a Porsche Boxster”.) While you can watch a video on how to do it - here is a quick overview/tips from my experience:1. It really doesn’t take many tools. A 24mm socket to release the belt tension and 10mm sockets and wrench to remove water pump bolts.2. All the access to the water pump is from below the car and behind the seats.3. You don’t need to replace the thermostat, or all your radiator hoses, or anything else. But check them out, and if you see any signs that they may not be in good shape, then consider doing it while you are in there.4. Water pumps come with their gasket. You will have to trim it but that’s easy.5. You will need to a couple of gallons of anti-freeze and a bucket to drain about 5 gallons of the old stuff. You will also need to have a place to dispose of it. Probably the biggest challenge of the job.6. When you look at the oil and water filler in the trunk, there is a little flap under the caps. Pull that flap out and there is a little wire lever to bleed the cooling system. You have to open this bleed valve to refill the coolant.

Drive to Longhorn CanyonArticle by Shelley Matthews Photos by Sherry Sorbera and Mike MatthewsOn a beautiful spring day in Texas, 17 cars full of LHR members met in Bergheim to wind their way through the twisty back roads - even the cows wanted to join us but they really couldn't keep up. Next was a stop in Luckenbach and on to the Longhorn Caverns (NOT named after our group - sorry) for a picnic lunch and a tour through the caverns. The day was perfect (high 80s) and the cavern was cool (68°). Bill and Irene Dorsey led the tour and a few of us even stopped by The Bluebon-net Cafe in Marble Falls for an early dinner and a slice of their famous pie for dessert.28 LH ROUNDUP

Choose Carefully, Part 2Article by Rob Turner, Maverick Region memberIt’s not so much that I am an automotive journalist. I’ve checked, the pay ain’t so great. Or an auto- industry pundit, ditto about the pay part. No I think of myself as an observer of things automotive. More of an automotive chronicler about all things Porsche. A monthly column kinda guy that writes from the heart. Most of the time. But there are times when I would love to be that guy that gets the call from an automotive manufacturer—BIG hint here Porsche—and a voice says something pithy like “How do you feel about The Steffel Pass in Zandfortin or the lovely Isle of Marjorie in the Delnium Islands? Think you might fancy a trip there? Oh, and we will throw in some cars for you to drive.” At this point, the writer is supposed to pause for a few seconds to leave the automotive marketing types hanging—like you’ll really turn them down—before saying very causally, “Let me check my calendar and see if those dates work.” Inside you are shouting, YES! I would cancel my wedding or try to delay the birth of my child to go there. And YES! I may even possibly be per-suaded—denitely maybe—that I could squeeze in driving some fast cars too. (Oh, and I hear that they ply you with good food and very good drink. Lots of it.) So you deliberately slow down your brain and try to be uber cool and nonchalant and work your mouth very carefully to say each word S L O W L Y, so you don’t end up sounding like an idiot. But that never works. You’ll blurt out “YesIwould-lovetogotoZandfortinyespleasethankyouvery-much.” Or something that is probably very close to unintelligible. The suave auto-marketing types knows what your response will be, so he tells you to check your inbox, ‘cause the itinerary will be forthcoming. You hang up and start packing right away, even though the trip is ve weeks out. You do want to be prepared after all. What does this have to do with a car company’s congurator? Well, I will get around to it - eventu-ally. See the auto companies want the Journos to write glowingly about their new offerings. They pick beautiful places, take over high-star hotels and make those hardworking Journos sit through a mind numbing half hour to forty-ve minutes of marketing speak before turning them loose in the car of the moment. But wait there’s more. They usually put every bell and whistle on the car to make sure that all the good stuff gets tested and written about. Problem is, when the writer is talking about this button here, that switch there or this sub-set of commands in the dark innards of the car’s perfor-mance capabilities, we are left lusting and wanting for things that we may not need or are too expen-sive to buy. I mean I would love to listen to a gold-plated Bergfarb Grand Marquis sound system, but probably won’t pony for the seven large to buy it. And the micromium plated multi-faceted sport de-sign exhaust at a mind numbing four big ones will probably not be one of the boxes I tick off. But the Journos? Man they love it. It’s pretty easy to turn a $60K car into a $80K (or at least $70K) car nowadays. And in Porsches’ case, a $100K car into a $150K car in a snap. Someday when I congure my 911, I may remem-ber some writer with his hair on re, going 120 MPH into a screaming long sweeper and talking about how the PDCC with Sport Chrono really sets the handling tone. But me, I will just opt for the PASM Sports Suspension at $890 and be done with it. I don’t mind if my eyeballs giggle on the road, I just want to take that corner at 125. Oh Baby. And on that exhaust note, see you all next time.RL Turner is the author of The Driver, a series of action adventure novels, available in both print and ebook on Amazon (more info at www.thedriv-er-series.com). Having owned a dozen Porsches and driven hundreds of laps on racetracks throughout the southwest, author Turner knows a few things about going fast in a Porsche and then xing them when he breaks something.
