COMMUNITY ARTICLE The Difference As a parent I understand the desire to give your child an excellent education in hopes to prepare him or her for a successful future I too have borne the weight of trying to make the best decision about how to educate my children As one having been engaged in a variety of educational methods public private homeschooling dual enrollment and college and enrolling my children in yet a different type of education a Montessori based studentled environment I d like to share what I believe fosters a love of learning in children as well as prepares them for life beyond school the Montessori Method I believe this educational method not only teaches facts but helps develop the child as a whole What is the Montessori Method The Montessori Method is a philosophy of education that helps children develop a deep love of learning by promoting individual interests exploration and hands on activities rather than children working at the same pace and on the same materials as their peers But how can education be tailored to each child in a group setting Let s take a look at the unique characteristics of this type of education Child directed learning Children are eager to learn and take great pride when given responsibility over their education A Montessori setting allows children to direct their own learning This nurturing and satisfying environment follows a child s unique personality spirit and readiness to progress In this environment they learn to govern themselves as well as their school community and eliminate the need for an authoritarian figure to direct their choices and actions Doesn t this setting sound like one that will prepare children to be responsible independent adults Multi age classrooms In multi age classrooms children learn to collaborate together and gain valuable insights from students of different ages and experiences Older children s previous Acton Academy 1 4 Page Vertical Rapids 1 4 Page Vertical LITTLES ACADEMY FOR AGES 3 5 YOUTH ACADEMY FOR AGES 5 8 WITH LOCAL WEEKDAY GAMES EMAIL US AT RAPIDSSC GMAIL COM OR FIND US ON FACEBOOK COMPETITIVE AGES 10 18 L E A R N M O R E O R R E G I S T E R AT WWW TWINFALLSRAPIDS COM 24 www southernidahokids com

COMMUNITY ARTICLE learning is solidified by assisting younger students They also develop leadership skills and rise to the privilege of being a role model to their younger peers Younger students learn new skills and advanced concepts through observing older peers They also feel supported and cared for by being guided by older students This setting reduces self centered competitiveness and promotes a close caring community How would raising children in this setting change our realworld communities Unique learning materials Montessori materials are specially designed hands on learning materials that teach core skills and life principles Students are encouraged to use their senses manipulate materials and move about when needed When children use their hands to discover learning is much more rooted and meaningful rather than reading mere symbols or words on a page These materials help students move from concrete to abstract concepts in an age appropriate progression Skills are mastered and then built upon versus moving on to a harder concept after an awarded letter grade regardless of readiness Mastering concepts not only builds a better understanding it also builds confidence in students which leads to increased joy in learning How many of us say we enjoy or even learn better by doing rather than by being told What the hand does the mind remembers Maria Montessori Summit Dental NO INSURANCE 1 4 Page Vertical We now have a savings plan for the whole family call us for details 208 733 9999 285 Canyon Crest Drive Twin Falls ID www summitdentalsmiles com Uninterrupted work periods Because each child is respected as a unique individual with different interests and abilities students are given an uninterrupted work period to work at their own pace This time allows children to feel enjoyment and accomplishment by being fully immersed and focused on one s work Students work on tasks without interruption for as long as they re interested They then return the material to the shelf and pick another skill that interests them Imagine the quality of work that could be accomplished when students are allowed to choose materials that interest them and then joyfully delve into a subject without bells changing their focus every period These are just a few of the differences between a Montessori environment versus a traditional setting However I ve seen these differences create confident independant and enthusiastic individuals who are prepared to positively contribute to their communities with the talents and passions they ve enriched in themselves A Montessori education does more than teach facts it develops all aspects of a child and prepares them for life Mindy Petramalo Head of School Acton Academy Does your child struggle to read out loud or hate spelling tests WE CAN HELP CALL TODAY TO SCHEDULE AN EVALUATION 208 366 4833 Kool Minds 1 4 Page Vertical W E O FFER O NE O N O NE SESSI O NS A S W E L L AS O NLI NE PRO G RAM S www koolminds com April 2022 25
