03YOUR HEALTH MATTERS Health hazards associated with welding processes typically include exposure to ultraviolet light (UV) radiation and intense visible light that have potential to cause eye damage. Physical eye hazards include welding spatter and grinding particles. It is important to understand the risks and use correct protection in the form of welding helmets and auto darkening filters.The risk of respiratory illness is an important problem in the workplace that needs careful consideration by both employee and employer. Prolonged exposure to high concentrations of dust, smoke, welding fumes, aerosols or toxic gases or vapours can lead to sever respiratory conditions and harm to other human organs. This risk can be eectively prevented with the use of respiratory protection equipment (RPE).Awareness is the first step in controlling hazards. Investing in the right personal protection equipment creates a healthier, safer and more productive workplace. REDUCE EXPOSURE TO HAZARDS UNDERSTAND THE RISKS Hazard identification – Recognize things that may cause harm or expose people to risk. Hazards can include fumes and gases, flying particles, fire and explosion, ultraviolet and infrared, radiation and noise.The correct selection of respiratory protection should be the result of a risk assessment conducted by a professional health and safety ocer.VENTILATION AND FUME EXTRACTION Ensure proper ventilation in the area where welding is being conducted to remove fumes and gases. 47PAPR INTRODUCTIONSELECTING PROPER RESPIRATORY EQUIPMENT (RPE)1. You need to know the concentration of the hazardous substance in a workplace (see step 2 & 3 of guide on page 46). 2. You need to know assigned Workplace Exposure Limit (WEL) WEL´s are occupational exposure limits (concentrations) of a specific airborne substance averaged over a reference period, to which workers may be exposed without experiencing significant adverse health eects. There are two reference periods for which the WELs may be set: 8-hour Time Weighted Average (TWA) and 15-minute Short Term Exposure Limit (STEL). TWA (Time Weighted Average) – 8 hours (long term) TWAs are set to help preventing health eects which require prolonged or accumulated exposure. STEL (Short Term Exposure Limit) – 15 minutes (short term) STELs are set to help prevents health eects which may be seen after short exposure (e.g. eye irritation that could occur after a few minutes) The absence of a substance from the list of WELs does not indicate that it is safe. For these substances, exposure should be controlled to a level to which nearly all the working population could be exposed, day after day at work, without any adverse eects on health.3. You need to determine the needed minimum protection factor of RPE. For example: Powered air purifying respirator incorporating a hood classified as TH3 according to EN 12 941 has a maximum inward leakage of 0.2 %.
