Hello Urban Experience Readers. It’s that time again, back to school, as an empty nester I remember those days as a parent adjusting to the days of summer coming to an end. This can be a big adjustment for children as they had nearly 3 months to relax without the educational structure of reading, writing, and mathematics they receive in school. As a parent here are some things to consider as your children go back to school: First look at your child’s behavior, is there enthusiasm, getting excited about going back to school, or is there a reluctance in going back after a long school break. This can involve many aspects and if your child is struggling in school this may aect his/her academic progress. As a former school counselor, I encourage all parents to develop a relationship with your child’s teacher (s), this will ensure your child knows how much you care about their education, and it builds unity and trust with the teacher and parent. So as school time approaches be sure to attend events such as the “ice cream socials” usually done in the elementary schools, and “back to school nights”. This is a great time at the beginning of the school year to develop a connection with your child’s teacher. The most important function is to attend all the Parent Teacher’s Conferences. Attending these conferences helps teachers know you as the parent desire to be informed. Establishing these relationships helps build a foundation you will continue throughout your child’s formal years including elementary, middle, and high school. Another concern that is vital to talk with your children about is bullying. As a reminder please be sure to visit SimplyNerdie.com; an anti-bullying brand that helps provide valuable resources and tools to help eliminate bullying. It is vitally important to never assume this can’t be an issue for your child, nor is it safe to assume that your child couldn’t be a bully. Whichever side your child is on, please have these conversations. Now if your child is dealing with bullying take time out to find out who is your child being bullied by and how they are being bullied. Unfortunately, kids get teased for so many reasons, including but not limited to not having named brand shoes or clothes, some kids get teased because they’re too big or too small, too dark or too light, too smart or not smart enough. As a parent I recommend building that trust with them that they will know they can come to you and tell you anything. The last thing we want is for our kids to feel they have no one they can trust and as a result they keep their hurt and pain bottled up inside. Unfortunately, there have been far too many suicides from kids being picked on from elementary age to college students. You may be saying that will never be my child, and I certainly hope this is true, but how about being proactive and speaking to your child early. Some kids get teased for being a nerd, which I like to rephrase the meaning behind being a nerd to; a person who is Nice Educated Respectful and Determined. So, in that case I’m a NERD too, and my desire is to continue being a NERD but also educating kids, teens, young adults and parents about being a NERD and helping to eliminate bullying. If your child is a bully, please don’t back down, address this issue with your child. You may have to ask very dicult questions that is challenging for both you and your child, however, it is vital that you do. As you ask those dicult questions and discuss with your child, your child will also know you care deeply and is very much concerned about them and their education which is a key to the challenges they will face in the world post-school education. Remind them of the Golden Rule: Treat others the way they want to be treated; a bully bullies because they are being bullied by someone else, another great reason to talk with your children. Bullying has no boundaries; sadly, bullying can also take place in the home, or a child can see bullying going on between the parents. Selah. Finally, if your child struggles with their academics be sure to talk with your child’s teacher so they can look at other resources the school may provide, or other potential resources in the community such as after school or before school tutoring programs to help your child improve in their reading, writing, and math. So, I pray you and your children have an amazing school year ahead, a year of success and a year without bullying. As a reminder as you follow these helpful tools just remember it’s never one and done but continue to keep the consistency of checking in with your child on how they are doing, as well as staying in contact with their teacher (s). As always if you or your child is struggling in any of these areas, please know you can always reach out and call our oce.Here's to a Happy and Successful New School Year!Blessings,Caleb Thomas M.A. LMHC319 206-0651caleb@thomasacc.comthomasacc.comThomas & Associates Counseling & ConsultingCounseling with a God given purpose!

AMERICAN HEART ASSOCIATIONBy: American Heart Association NewsKeep busy kids focused on heart health as they head back to schoolSummer is winding down and it’s almost time for kids to head back to school. As schedules change, it’s a great time for families to look at the ways they’re spending their time. It could impact their heart health. Staying active, eating healthy and getting plenty of sleep help kids stay healthy now and throughout their life. On the other hand, too much screen time and unhealthy, on-the-go-eating habits could make for some hard lessons in poor heart health in the future. “Our habits in adulthood begin in childhood, and we know that a sedentary lifestyle that’s spent in front of screens and not being outside, having fun with friends and being physically active puts children at a variety of health risks,” said Federico Asch, M.D., a volunteer member of the American Heart Association’s Science Advisory and Coordinating Committee, a cardiologist at MedStar Health and a professor of medicine at Georgetown University in Washington, D.C. “Once the school year starts, kids tend to have less free time and may navigate toward less active habits such as watching TV and playing video games. This is especially true as kids get older and no longer have scheduled gym classes or recess and don’t take part in organized or school sports.”Federal guidelines recommend children and teens ages 6 to 17 get at least an hour of

Page 11

11moderate to vigorous activity a day, including more intense activities at least three times a week.Healthy eating is also important for growing kids. Once the busy school year starts, many may skip breakfast in the morning and if the family doesn’t have a scheduled mealtime, they may be grabbing unhealthy snacks on the go after school and munching on junk food while engaging in that screen time in the evenings.Even sleep can signicantly impact a child’s health. Adequate sleep promotes healing, improves brain function and reduces the risk for chronic diseases. Children require more sleep than adults, with recommendations for kids including:♥ 10-16 hours for ages 5 and younger, including naps; . ♥ 9-12 hours for ages 6-12; ♥ and 8-10 hours for ages 13-18.The American Heart Association suggests a few tips for helping keep kids heart-healthy: Schedule family time for physical activity. Weather permitting, go outdoors for a walk, a hike or even just some backyard games. Indoor activities can actually incorporate active screentime, like playing a dance-off or interactive sports video game. Plan a weekly menu and prep your meals. Encourage kids to help with meal planning and even grocery shopping. Make sure you have on hand foods they will eat that are also healthy for them. Taking the time to prepare for the week ahead – even cutting up fruits and veggies for healthy snacks – can help improve overall diets. Simplify your family’s schedule. In today’s society we’re expected to do it all. But this type of non-stop lifestyle isn’t sustainable or healthy. Try prioritizing your activities and see what you can do without so you’ll have more time for the things that matter. You can also work on ways to manage stress.  Set a regular bed time – and wake-up time. Develop bedtime routines to wind down after a busy day. While it may be unrealistic to expect older kids to turn in early, have them to turn off their phones and other devices prior to bedtime. Encourage them to develop their own rituals for a good night’s sleep – and trying to catch up on the weekends doesn’t count. Live by example. Be a role model for healthy behaviors. It doesn’t mean you have to change-up everything at once, set goals and take baby steps. Teaching your kids about heart health now will help them live longer, healthier lives for their own future.“It can be a challenge for busy working parents to nd ways to keep their kids active and help them develop healthy habits. We know lifelong heart health begins in childhood, so it’s important to make the effort,” Asch said. “Switch off the TV and limit video game time and instead go outside to toss a ball or take a walk. Schedule regular family dinner time as often as possible and encourage your kids to help in the meal planning. Simple steps can make a big difference and will set them up for a lifetime of good health.”Learn more about the importance of heart health at heart.org.

19Many of us have our minds set on daily tasks that have to be done before the end of the day, a check list of chores to do, maybe even some short term or long term goals to accomplish along the way. Although each day has many different things that need done; is making time for God a priority in your life?Just a thought; do you make time to talk with God? An intimate relationship with God is essential to our lives. Our Heavenly Father rewards those who diligently seeks Him. God works according to your faith. A GUIDE TO RECLAIMING YOUR HEALTH AND WELLBEINGTRANSFORMING INNER TURMOILWritten by: Debra A. Carr

Page 21

21A GUIDE TO RECLAIMING YOUR HEALTH AND WELLBEINGIn the hustle and bustle of everyday life, it's easy to attribute our struggles to external forces. However, sometimes the most challenging obstacles we face come from within ourselves or those closest to us, such as a partner, spouse or even a good friend. Recognizing and addressing these internal and relational challenges is crucial for reclaiming our health and wellbeing. Here's a personal perspective on navigating these turbulent waters and emerging stronger on the other side.RECOGNIZING INNER STRUGGLESThe rst step in this journey is recognizing that sometimes, the negative forces we battle come from within. Self-doubt, insecurities, and unresolved trauma can manifest as internal struggles, holding us back from reaching our full potential. It’s essential to confront these inner conicts head-on:1. Self-Reection: Take time to introspect and identify the root causes of your inner turmoil. Journaling, meditation, or speaking with a therapist can help uncover hidden fears and anxieties.2.Self-Compassion: Be kind to yourself. Acknowledge that it's okay to have aws and that healing is a process. Replace self-criticism with self-love.3. Setting Boundaries: Establish clear boundaries with yourself regarding negative self-talk and destructive behaviors. Practice saying no to things that drain your energy.4. Listen to Yourself: Pay attention to your self-talk. No one can hear your thoughts, but you do. When they come to your mind, redirect the thought and replace them with more positive thoughts. Redirecting and reframing the context of the messages swirling in your mind can prove benecial. You have the power to shi a negative thought to a positive outcome.NAVIGATING TOXIC RELATIONSHIPS When the source of your distress is linked to a partner, spouse or even a good friend, the situation can become even more complex. We know we can’t control what others think, say, or do; however, we can control how we choose to respond. When those close to us give negative energy, these relationships can become toxic and may severely impact your mental and physical health. Here’s how to manage such situations:1. Identify Toxic Patterns: Pay attention to patterns of manipulation, control, and emotional abuse. Recognizing these behaviors is the rst step toward addressing them.2. Communicate Eectively: Open and honest communication is vital. Express your feelings and concerns without fear of retaliation. If your partner is receptive, consider couples counseling to work through issues together. If it is a friend, try talking to them and sharing how their behavior makes you feel. Oen people who project negative energy have a low level of social awareness. They oen lack the ability to take another person’s perspective. If you nd yourself in that type of situation, your ability to communicate clearly without attacking the other person can be helpful. If the other person has a conscious and any bit of a rational mind, the hope is they can listen to hear you and understand where you are coming from and hopefully change their behavior. If your earnest eorts go in vain, it may be time to let go of the relationship. This is oen easier said than done, yet it may be very necessary to do so given the circumstances.3. Prioritize Your Wellbeing: Your health and wellbeing should always come rst. If the relationship is causing more harm than good, it may be time to consider separation or seek professional help to navigate your options. Staying in a negative relationship of any type is not worth losing yourself in the process. Recognize what role you may have played (if any) in the tension felt; yet don’t make excuses for the toxic behavior of the other person. It is ok if you choose to close that chapter and begin writing a new one. Some relationships are only meant to be for a season. RECLAIMING YOUR HEALTH AND WELLBEINGTaking back control of your life and wellbeing involves intentional actions and a commitment to self-care. Here are some strategies to help you reclaim your power:1. Build a Support Network: Surround yourself with supportive friends and family who upli and encourage you. Isolation can exacerbate feelings of helplessness, so seek out positive connections. Disconnect from those that do not bring value into your life.2. Engage in Self-Care Practices: Regular exercise, healthy eating, and sucient sleep are fundamental

Page 22

to maintaining your physical and mental health. Incorporate activities that bring you joy and relaxation into your daily routine.Try herbal remedies and supplements that do not have extra additives and llers. Incorporate more fruits and vegetables in your diet and be sure to drink lots of alkaline water. Water is a healer. Leverage water for all the health benets that it provides. Minimize or eliminate excess sugars and processed foods out of your diet. Also, be careful of toxins found in daily products like candles, toilet paper, washing powder, room fresheners, and even shampoo, mouthwashes, deodorants, and toothpaste. You will be surprised at what you learn when you become a more informed consumer.3. Seek Professional Help: Therapists, counselors, and life coaches can provide valuable guidance and support as you navigate these challenges. Don’t hesitate to reach out for professional assistance. There are a growing number of culturally competent therapists and counselors being added on a regular basis. Interview them and nd one that specializes in areas you may need additional support with.4.Empower Yourself: Engage in activities that boost your condence and sense of self-worth. Whether it’s pursuing a new hobby, furthering your education, or setting and achieving personal goals, empowerment is key to reclaiming your life. 5. Try something new: Set an intention and challenge yourself to travel somewhere you have never been before, sit and enjoy the beauty of nature or even write a book. Whatever you choose, expand your sphere of inuence and creativity by challenging yourself to think of opportunities to live a more positive and spirit lled life. It all begins with your thought and your commitment to take action to create the life you choose to live surrounded by those who support you along the way.CONCLUSIONFacing inner struggles or challenges in close relationships is a daunting task, but it is also a transformative journey. By acknowledging these challenges, setting boundaries, and prioritizing self-care, we can reclaim our health and wellbeing. Remember, you are deserving of love, respect, and happiness, and sometimes the most courageous act is choosing to take care of yourself.Got an Event? We do Ctering!CONTACT US TODAY! 515-770-2271 • RUBYBSKITCHEN.COM
