Ryan McGinely Ryan McGinley burst into prominence in his early twenties after circulating copies of a self published portfolio of photographs He has since become known as the youngest artist at the age of 23 to present a solo exhibition at the Whitney Museum of American Art His work revolves around the life and youth of family and friends in contemporary culture and particularly in the Lower East Side While his early works featured more candid and documentary subjects he started to explore around 2003 the possibility of photographing directed situations He has since become known for studio portraits and landscapes with bodies in action or lost in contemplation McGinley s models are usually nude but never sexualized I think most people look at the nudity sexually but I believe everyone looks much sexier with their clothes on 41

Harley Weir Weir s work oscillates between brazen glimpses of the body and an ongoing obsession with youth subsuming the photographer s many influences into the washed out tender fashion images Whether shooting a red headed family in high fashion threads or turning the war reportage on its head in Israel and Jordan Weir s images exude an enigmatic magnetism to consistently pull the audience in 44

DANI ROCHE The Babaton Girl Boss How did you get your start in this huge industry what inspired you to become an entrepreneur so young I got my start through fashion blogging and communities such as Lookbook nu way back in 2008 and from there I realized this desire to start a business My first business was selling clothes online vintage clothes and clothing that I had sewn and designed in my basement with my business partner at the time From there it progressed into starting a business called Kastor Pollux How did you come up with your name for the brand agency When I was in high school my old business partner and I looked super similar our friends would mistake us for each other all the time When we started Kastor Pollux we wanted a name that paid tribute to that Since Castor Pollux are the Gemini twins we went with it and changed the C to a K because I liked the way it looked typographically What do you like most about being your own boss and about the Kastor Pollux environment I really like the fact that I can work with my friends in a very transparent open environment What s the biggest challenge in running your own business Something that I never thought that I d like doing the business aspect of of the firm The challenge is finding a smart happy medium between my instinct and what I think is actually a logical way to solve a problem What are three things we can always find in your bag My laptop which doubles as a phone charger a granola bar since I m always hungry and last but not least my makeup bag What is one piece of advise you d like to give young creatives Try everything at once and don t be afraid of doing something that s embarrassing or stupid It s so important to try new things and know what your weaknesses are and then try to pinpoint them so you can improve Name five things you cant live without 1 Coffee 2 Tinder 3 Babaton Sweater 4 Wacom Tablet 5 Mint chocolate 89

CAROLINE ISSA The Wilfred Warrior How has your style evolved as you ve moved into the fashion industry I ve really embraced colour and print I started my career wearing suits and probably worse suits than the ones I wear now and nowadays although I still wear a suit I opt for one paired with tops that are a little bit crazier from Wilfred with florals or polka dots on it for example What do you like to wear when you re off duty I tend to wear looser silhouettes and a lot of cashmere knitwear During the week I wear outfits that are sharper and more fitted so at the weekend I prefer to wear easy and comfortable pieces I love throwing a chunky sweater over a silk dress What are your top five ultimate musthave wardrobe items The first thing is a classic fit silk y shirt I invest in those a lot For me good denim is also a must have especially high waisted or boyfriend jeans When it comes to tops it s important to have a good cotton top that can take you from day to night One of my favourites is a white stiff cotton one from Wilfred that s extra extra long at the back You are an expert at putting together colour and wearing print What are your tips for introducing these into your everyday wardrobe For me I would wear a leather coat with a pink dress underneath and think it s totally normal but I realize that that is further than most women want to go The best thing is to start with easy layering pieces I recoommend investing in colourful and or printed blouses that you can wear underneath solids So if you have a black suit try investing in a peach or baby blue blouse instead of the usual white or grey ones What are your travel essentials I tend to wear elasticated trousers purely for comfort so I don t have too tight jeans cutting me off when I m sitting My favourite the Wilfred track pants with zippers and leather detailing which I love On top I often wear an easy knit that s breathable but still warm because sometimes it gets super hot or cold on the airplane I ve also started wearing an amazing travel outfit from Wilfred it looks like a high end pair of cashmere pyjamas but it looks quite chic when I pair it with earrings 121

TINASHE The TNA Trendsetter How would you describe your day today personal style Moody My style changes from one day to the next It really all depends on what side of the bed I wake up on What are the three most worn pieces in your wardrobe An oversized T shirt or crop sweater sweat pants and sneakers Does your fashion mirror your music style which has a lot of sass and attitude or do you play it safe with fashion I guess the best way for me to describe myself and my personal style is that I don t like to be generalized and put in one singular box In music I m not just one thing and the same can be said for my sense of fashion How if at all does your style change when you re on stage It all about confidence when you hit the stage When you re confident everything looks better The crowd helps because they give you this oneof a kind amazing energy You seem confident in both your music and your fashion sense But is there any fashion advice that you would offer to your younger self I never wore sneakers in my teens I would tell my younger self to buy a pair of J s Jordans The heels aren t fooling anyone You ve been spotted in various pieces from Vancouver based brand TNA do you have a favourite look or item from the line I love the entire athleisure style vibe to the collection It really goes handin hand with my laid back persona The best thing about both TNA and Aritzia as a brand is that it extends past fashion and really becomes like a lifestyle When I m in the clothes I feel a certain way and that feeling doesn t come around all that often Finally what are you most excited about when it comes to fall fashion Peacoats and knee high boots 143
