Thurston Woods Village Case StatementThurston Woods Village Case Statement45OUR PASSIONOur mission statement and core values serve as our guiding principles, aligning all involved with our organization, from Caregivers to Board Members. In our over 70-year history, these principles have served as our inspiration as we have grown; equally important is that our ideas and values have inspired others. Over the years, our benefactors have made signicant contributions that have helped us create transformational change. We believe our supporters say this better than we can, so here are a few comments from individuals who have provided their nancial support to Thurston Woods Village:“As you know, during the Fall months, Mom was being moved around with the lift, we were all taking turns feeding her, a lot of the time she wasn’t sure quite where she was or what was going on and what events had transpired. I have probably mentioned to you all before how fearful I was to take her away from the ‘city’ hospitals and doctors. But you have proven me wrong again, AND…bigger is not always better! Your entire sta has shown her love and compassion and she is the HAPPIEST I have seen her in years. She feels at home with you. She is active. She is making friends. She is cracking jokes, calls me all the time, and it is the most wonderful transformation to watch. I am most grateful that I am only 10 minutes down the road! Until Thurston Woods, she was pretty down in the dumps. Anyway, I could ramble on and on, but the short story is…thank you ALL for everything that you do, day in and day out for all of you residents, but mainly for my Mom”“For 3 years our mother has been a resident. We are very happy and satised with our Mom’s care and facility. Please keep up the standards and care for all our elderly. It brings comfort and peace to the family.”“I have lived here for 5 years. I feel that this Villa is truly lled with a Christian atmosphere & all the people that take care of us are kind – caregivers, dietary, cleaners, maintenance, a great beautician & free manicures. We are blessed with a very good chaplain.” These strong responses in support of Thurston Woods Village come about because of our exceptional sta and unique service level. We work hard to create a sense of belonging, oering engaging and enriching opportunities for our residents to gather together. Our donors identify with that philosophy, creating a sense of belonging for our residents with their gifts and promoting the highest quality of life.

Thurston Woods Village Case Statement9While our primary purpose is providing senior living, our reach extends beyond our buildings’ walls and our campus’s connes. We employ over 175 individuals, making us a leading employer in the Sturgis community. Ensuring we have well-trained and compassionate sta is easily our most important investment and is no small undertaking. Our requirements and the challenges that arise are constantly changing, requiring diligence from our leadership team to ensure that our sta always stays current. We also adopt new and better programs to keep Thurston Woods Village as the leader compared to our peers. One example of our signicant investment in the sta of Thurston Woods Village is how we train sta who work in Willowbrook Memory Care. Thanks to an anonymous donor who believes in and understands the value of highly trained sta, every employee who works in Willowbrook completes a comprehensive training program that covers ve topic areas for Alzheimer’s and dementia, including person-centered care, assessment and care planning, activities of daily living, communication changes and dementia-related behavior. Our Willowbrook sta are then tested in these areas and achieve certication; successfully completing the training and maintaining the certication is required to work in Willowbrook. This knowledge is then implemented and accompanies our memory care program that revolves around each resident’s unique life story. Our sta takes the time to learn about each individual, write their life story, and then adapt our care practices to t the person. Every aspect of what we do, from meal schedules to medication administration, centers around the person. This is one example of our signicant investment in the sta of Thurston Woods Village and how others can support us. Donating to educational opportunities truly provides a gift of knowledge that directly benets not only our sta but also our residents. It’s clear from our services to our sta, that Thurston Woods Village is unique. OUR PEOPLEEvery aspect of what we do, from meal schedules to medication administration, centers around the person.

11Thurston Woods Village Case Statement10OUR VISIONThurston Woods Village, our Board of Directors and Administration, has always been visionary, even from the onset of our existence. Vision was required when the Froh brothers identied the need for a place to care for senior citizens in 1953, a relatively new concept primarily provided for in more urban areas. This innovative vision continued in the ensuing years, creating a Life Plan community in the mid-1980s when only a few hundred existed nationwide. Thurston Woods Village remains a unique oering even today, representing one of only two registered, independently owned Life Plan communities in Michigan serving a community of 12,000 or less. Our latest example of vision is Willowbrook Memory Care, opening in 2023; it serves as the only dedicated memory care community within an hour of Sturgis, ensuring that people who live in our community can stay in our community to get the help they need. We keep our eyes on the future, evaluating strategies for things like:• Home-based services for individuals with high care needs and low incomes are provided through an innovative program that requires excellent care management.• Independent living options for middle-income seniors that serves a dual purpose for them to enjoy the benets of living at Thurston Woods Village and creates an opportunity for other Sturgis area residents to purchase the aordable homes that these seniors move from. • Expansion of existing services such as independent living in the form of constructing new duplex homes; or assisted living by reopening an adult foster care home. The support we receive from donors gives us the condence to grow and serve more people in our community. If Thurston Woods Village is to remain on the cutting edge, it will only be with that continued support. As you can see, a gift to Thurston Woods Village has far-reaching implications beyond our campus and securing our future. We appreciate the many blessings we have been given, and with the grace of God, we look forward to continuing our work in His service. You can support Thurston Woods Village by making your tax-deductible donation directly to us for one of our excellent services, through a gift to the Benevolent Care Fund, or by a planned gift, where you can plan a gift for us from your estate. Please get in touch with us if you’d like to learn more about supporting Thurston Woods Village.
