do so by Friday 11 April otherwiseyou won’t be allowed. If you’re voting in person don’tforget the new rules which meanyou must take photo ID, like adriving licence or passport, toprove you are you. Alternatively you can vote by post. However, to do that you must alsoapply and be registered with thegovernment by 5pm on Monday14th April. If you miss this date, youcan still vote in person but not bypost. If you want a proxy vote you mustalready be registered to vote - asdoes the person you want to voteon your behalf. But you have until5pm on St George’s Day (23rd April)to register for a proxy vote. Alldetails can either be found onGov.uk or on Cornwall Council’swebsite. If you are interested in earning a bitof cash on the 1st May thenCornwall Council is looking forpeople to work on both election dayand the election count. They need a presiding officer (£295)and poll clerk (£221). This involvesworking from at least 7am until10pm and also requires you toattend online or in-person training.GET READY FOR THE EXCITEMENT OF THELOCAL ELECTIONSIt’s that time again. Every fouryears we have the chance to eitherstand as a parish or Cornwallcouncillor, vote for them or votethem out. There are two sets of electionshappening. One for CornwallCouncils’ Longrock, Marazion andSt Erth area representative. Andone for Marazion Town Council. Between 7am and 10pm, Thursday1st May, you can pop to our PollingStation up at the CommunityCentre and vote for who you want. The Cornwall Council elections willbe contested by national politicalparties and independentcandidates. Meanwhile, historically, the Town Council elections havenever had political party candidatesand instead feature independentlocal people passionate about Marazion. You can vote in person, by post orby proxy (where someone can votefor you if you can’t get to thepolling station in person) but youmust register and let theauthorities know. If you are not registered to voteand you want to exercise the rightthat millions fought and died forover the decades, then you need to They also are looking for countsupervisors and count assistants(£12.50p/h in the day and £17.50p/hif it is an overnight count). Now the fun part - if you want tostand to become a councillor. Youmust have your nomination papershanded into Cornwall Council by nolater than 4pm on Wednesday 2ndApril. For Marazion Town Council, thereare 11 unpaid councillor postsavailable for the 1,170 voters in ourtown to vote to fill. In an ideal worldmany more than 11 people will puttheir names forward so thatresidents can vote for theirpreferred candidate. However, should there be 11 or fewerpeople wanting to be a MarazionTown Councillor then there will beno election and no chance for you toselect who you want. If there are fewer than 11 councillors on Marazion Town Council then itcan still operate but then the councilwill start looking to ‘co-opt’(absolutely not press gang) peopleinto serving our community. The elections are held every fouryears and any elected councillor, unless they stand down, will servefor that amount of time. S P R I N G / S U M M E R 2 0 2 5 V O L . 5P A G E 4

While thereis road furniture like humps and chicanes slowing peoplea bit, it is hoped an extra prod by the signs will also makepeople kill their speed and not a child. Like the ones as you go through Rosesudgeon, Thesehighly visible signs display real-time vehicle speeds, encouraging motorists to adhere to the speed limit anddrive responsibly. The signs can be shifted from one spot to another to helpremind people of Marazion now being a 20mph zone. They will be popping up on Gwallon Lane, Turnpike Roadand West End.
