Students who are chronically absent inpreschool, kindergarten, and first grade aremuch less likely to read at grade level by thirdgrade - which would make them 4 timesmore likely to drop out of hign school thanproficient readers. A student who is chronically absent any yearbetween grades 8 and 12 iis more than 7times more likely to drop out. SUMMARYChronic absenteeism may preventchildren from reaching early learningmilestones. Irregular attendance can be a betterpredictor of whether students will dropout before graduation than test scores. Frequent absences from school can shapeadulthood.Children who are chronically absent in preschool, kindergarten,and first grade are much less likely to read at grade level bythird grade. Students who cannot read at grade level by theend of third grade are four times more likely than proficientreaders to drop out of high school . A study of public school students in Utah found that anincidence of chronic absenteeism in even a single yearbetween 8th and 12th grade was associated with a seven-foldincrease in the likelihood of dropping out. High school dropout, which chronically absent students aremore likely to experience, has been linked to poor outcomesalter in life, from poverty and diminished health to involvementin the criminal justice system.
