The Memory ProjectThese hand designs were created as a means of promoting empathy, understanding and diversity through global outreach. The Memory Projectconnects children that are culturally very different from one another. Fifth graders exchanged artwork with Syrian children currently residing in a refugee camp in Jordan. The intent of the exchange is to promote intercultural awareness, break down barriers and inspire creativity through the universal language of art. Each student designed a “Healing Hand” using the Zentangle method. Additional cross-cultural connections were made with the tangles themselves; the patterns derived from Indian henna, Celtic art, Zuni and Native American pottery, Maori tattoos and Islamic tiling.

Page 52

During this PBL (project-based learning)project, students studied the area that the children are living in and watched a video about the origin of The Memory Project. They paired off with an iPad and took pictures of one another to be included with their drawings. The cross-cultural nature of this project was in keeping with our theme of unityand reaching out to those in a time of need. The hand image is representative of friendship; the children are symbolically reaching out and touching hands.
