LizzieMamie LouIsabel RoseAlfredSusanSybilAlfred Jones - Micah Tripp
Micah Tripp was born sometime between 1850 and 1863. She was the second or third daughter ofWesley Harris and Eliza Tripp. Her actual birth date is not known at this time. Census records taken in1870, 1880, 1900, and 1910 give her an uneven age differential at each of these census reports. Hermaternal sisters were Mollie, Sarah, and Sylvia. No other sisters or brothers have been associated withMicah. Very little is known about her sisters but census records indicate that Mollie was a school teacher. In 1865 the daughter of a plantation owner named Tripp moved from Henrico County in Virginia toAmericus, Georgia. As a gift from her father she took Micah, her parents, and her sisters. Micah wasbelieved to be about 15 years old at the time. Micah married Alfred Jones on June 30th 1881, in Americus, Georgia. The marriage ceremony wasperformed by Reverend Thomas Steward. Micah and Alfred had thirteen children. The 1900 censusrecords the names of their living children as Rose, Sybil, Susan, Olivia, Lizzie, Isabel, Alfred, and MamieLou. We do not know the names of the other children. A fire destroyed the 1990 census records andunfortunately those records may have given us the names to the other five children.Alfred died prior to 1890. Micah supported her children by working as a cook. Her sisters Rose, whoworked as a servant, and Olivia, who worked as a laborer, assisted her. Micah died in 1927.Our Tripp-Jones Family LineageThe Tripp line of our family lineage has come from one of two families of Tripps who came to southernAmerica. The first was Edward Tripp who resided in Northampton County, Virginia in 1649. The secondwas Henry Tripp who resided in Maryland in 1663.The Jones line of our family lineage may be linked to a George Jones. George was a member of theearliest Jones family to come to America. George Jones resided in Maryland in 1663.
Dear Cousins,It has been an honor to serve as historian of the Tripp Jones Family. I hope that it has beenrewarding for you to learn about our family’s history. The history of our family is filled withcountless stories of courage and faith and an indomitable will to embrace change rather than bedefeated by it. The contributions of our ancestors who hailed from Florida to Washington DCcontinually impact daily our lives. My overarching goal as historian is to get the whole family involved in uncovering andpreserving our family history. Over the years, you have answered that charge. I invite each ofyou to continue to submit photographs, stories, cherished family documents, and personalmemorials to be included in our archives. The pages that follow are an accumulation of theinformation that you have lovingly contributed since our last reunion. Thank you for supportingthis effort. When getting together with loved ones for the holidays, take advantage of that time to collectpieces of family stories which hold the keys to understanding and appreciating ourselves. Thebetter we understand our family the better we understand ourselves. This understanding isgained as we look to our family’s heritage with the help of our more seasoned relatives. Bydiscovering the customs, practices and traditions of our ancestors we uncover truths aboutourselves. We discover the ambitions and fears of our forefathers along with their triumphs. Inthe process of learning our family history we uncover our past, understand our present andshape our future. Over the past year we have celebrated the growth of our family in a variety of ways. On April 6,2024 we celebrated the marriage of Miriam and Marquis Rountree (Americus District) during abeautiful ceremony and reception held in Atlanta. I along with Antoine Lee (WashingtonD.C./Virginia District) welcomed Marquis to the Tripp-Jones Family during this joyous occasion. We were also blessed to expand our family via the birth of A’Kai Jae Smith (Florida District) andLeon Toby Hall-Garcia (Atlanta District). Since we last met in 2023, we have also experiencedthe transition of our cousin Millicent Lee (Washington D.C./Virginia District). During last year’s reunion, Kaliyah Steward-Ellis (Washington D.C./Virginia District) received a$1000 scholarship from the Elmira Kendrick Memorial Scholarship/Book Award. The moniesreceived were applied to her freshman year studies at College of Mount Saint Vincent in NewYork. In honor of our esteemed family members, let us work together to continue to collect ourfamily stories and heirloom documents to be shared with and preserved as priceless gifts forfuture generations.Sincerely,Betty Joyce Driskell-MayFamily Historian
