TRANSITIONLEARNINGSUPPORT PROGRAMThe Transition program is dedicated to empowering students with diagnosed learning differences, including dyslexia, dysgraphia, and dyscalculia. We aim to guide students toward their academic goals through tailored lessons, grade-level curriculum, and explicit executive functioning instruction. This is accomplished through the implementation of research-based strategies and responsive classroom experiences carefully curated for each student’s unique strengths and needs. More than an educational initiative, the Transition program bridges the gap between diagnosed learning differences and academic success. With SMALLER CLASS SIZES, EXPERT FACULTY, AND PROVEN PEDAGOGICAL APPROACHES for every academic area, your child will learn the same college-preparatory curriculum as Woodward peers in mainstream classes while developing tools and strategies to transform diverse learning profiles into con-fidence, social and emotional stability, and tremendous academic success.

Beginning with the second grade on Main Campus in College Park, the Transition Program provides a comprehensive college prep curriculum for bright students who learn differently. Transition students learn the same curriculum as mainstream peers, but the material is taught in ways that suit their individual needs and learning profiles. The academic environment is designed for students with average to above-average intelli-gence and a specific documented diagnosis by either a private or school psychologist in areas such as dyslexia, dysgraphia, and auditory processing, among others. It is not designed to meet the needs of students whose learning problems exist primarily because of below-average intelligence, behavioral issues, or attention regulation.PRIMARY AND LOWER SCHOOL GRADES 26 At the Primary and Lower School level, teachers use a multi-sensory, specialized instructional approach in a combination of one-to-one, small group, and whole-class instruction, and place special emphasis on training in language arts and mathematics. Students participate in field trips and other cocurricular offerings. The average class size is nine students. MIDDLE SCHOOL GRADES 78 In the seventh and eighth grades, tutorials for individual clarifica-tion and reinforcement are held daily. At this level, students may be mainstreamed in one or more courses. The Transition Program stresses the acquisition of academic concepts and skills necessary for successful college preparatory work. Students move from classroom to classroom in reading, English, social stud-ies, mathematics, science, and various elective courses. Study strategies, organization skills, and other tools are emphasized in all disciplines. Average class size is 10 to 12 students.
