HISTORY Born January 19 1958 in the foothills of the Sierra Thom s skill and subject matter developed into Nevada in Northern California Thomas Kinkade a distinctive luminous style as he incorporated overcame a difficult childhood with determination a chiaroscuro and positive faith based message As strong sense of purpose and a tremendous talent to he honed his skills he built a powerful following of paint As a young man he began an apprenticeship collectors who also shared his message of a simpler with a local artist who further encouraged and trained and slower paced lifestyle him beyond Thom s own capabilities at the time Thom was a prolific creator and painted the world s He began studies at UC Berkley and transferred to most celebrated landmarks along with the most ArtCenter College of Design Thom soon married modest dwellings During his life Thom became the his high school sweetheart Nanette and they moved most published artist as he grew his following and back to their hometown of Placerville California to told his message raise their young family Upon his death in 2012 Thom had amassed a Thom and Nanette took their life savings and invested tremendous vault of unpublished works in varying in publishing prints of Thom s works The prints soon stages of completion His atelier maintains the became popular and in 1990 Thom ventured into Thomas Kinkade Studio collaboration and continues the publishing business creating his first business the Thomas Kinkade legacy Lightpost Publishing

THOMAS KINKADE STUDIOS Thomas Kinkade the famed Painter of Light loved to share his passion for art and his creative process with other artists throughout his career Thom believed in supporting artist development and exchanged ideas with artists Through this collaborative environment Thom passed down his methods and imparted the techniques concepts and vision for his signature Kinkadian style Today the artists of the Thomas Kinkade Studios apply many of the same techniques created by and used by Thom during his lifetime from sketching to digital and oil brushwork to image recapture and his use of light Over time these mastered skills have evolved into a Kinkadian style of art adored by art collectors around the world

Thomas Kinkade was deemed the most collected American Artist known as The Painter of Light living artist an unthinkable success to achieve Early on in art school Thom declared that his art during one s lifetime yet Thom reached this goal contrary to popular thought at the time was not early on in his prolific career Thom s evolution and going to be about him but rather about enriching elevation of painting techniques his successes his the life experiences of others From there he set works of charity and the devotion to his family out to write his personal story of family faith and all come together to tell the story of the great above all inspiring life affirming art

LEGACY To continue the legacy of Thomas Kinkade wife Nanette dedicate themselves to continuing and his art after his passing his family created a their father s legacy Through the Kinkade Family charitable organization in his honor The Kinkade Foundation the five Kinkade women honor the Family Foundation founded shortly after his memory of the remarkable man Thomas Kinkade death in 2012 is dedicated to sharing Thom s in the ways he would most appreciate by touching message supporting the arts and creative process lives with his art helping those in need and and pursuing humanitarian works in the global supporting creativity for all community Each of Thom s four daughters and his

T hom s fondest recollections as a child and as an adult are commemorated in the many works of art complied in his Americana genre such as America s Pride Called to Serve and A Trusted Friend One never knows what a child will remember what moments they ll latch on to and set aside to replay in their head in the years to come It could be a family vacation meeting a fireman or police officer or even a stuffed bear that pops up into a daydream Events shared by many can trigger a collective recollection Thom shared his collected memories and the memories of others through his paintings where he knew it was often the simplest moments that made the most impressionable and lasting memories

F or Thomas Kinkade painting was one of his most skillful forms of communication and through his art he communicated deeply and profoundly Part of what made Thom s art so meaningful was his use of symbols such as light words numbers and of course subject matter Among his favorite symbols were bridges To Thom bridges symbolized crossing over from darkness to light He emphasized this figurative ideal in many of his paintings where the viewer can actually see the romantic luminism of dark transitioning to light from one side of the bridge to another Thom painted famous bridges like the Golden Gate in California the Gapstow Bridge in New York s Central Park and the Tower Bridge in London Not all of Thom s bridge scapes however were grand Thom also painted bridges set in idyllic cottage landscapes like Bridge of Hope and Cobblestone Bridge which shepherded the viewer into peaceful and reflective settings Stone wooden or metal one can t help but search the spans of each Thomas Kinkade bridge and wonder what is on the other side

BRIDGES Blossom Bridge 1995 Country Memories 1992 Blossom Lane I Image Size 16 x 20 The Old Covered Bridge at Thomaston Brook Image Size 12 x 16 This title is sold out at publisher I came upon a scene in Ireland where ancient footpaths wind their way over an old stone bridge to a distant village It was all so green that I began to add brightly colored flowers and suddenly a riot of colors took over While visiting New England Nanette and I decided to search for some of the old haunts of our mutual hero Norman Rockwell Country Memories is a loving tribute to the charming country area Rockwell called home for so many years Golden Gate Bridge San Francisco 1995 The Th he Broadwater Broad dwaterr Brid Bridge dge Th Thomashire homashhire 1992 San Francisco Collection VI Image Size 24 x 36 This title is sold out at publisher NALED Lithograph Of The Year Second Runner Up 1995 Thomashire I Image Size 16 x 20 This title is sold out at publisher I came upon a half hidden trail overlooking the bay and followed it down through a dense eucalyptus forest leading to a small beach A fisherman there told me Few know about this place but it s like nowhere else in the world As he spoke a dense fog lifted and before me stood the majestic arch of the Golden Gate Bridge This beautiful Victorian era stone bridge is located on an idyllic stretch of stream that was once part of a large private estate and has been converted into an exclusive trout fishing club for gentlemen and ladies 21

A deeply religious man Thomas Kinkade thoroughly enjoyed the Christmas season While other artists shy away from distinctly seasonal subject matter he loved painting the warmth joy and family traditions of this nostalgic time of year Throughout the Christmas genre Thom pulled liberally from childhood memories He was inspired by traditions he experienced as a boy as well as traditions he dreamed of Having grown up in the Sierra Foothills in Northern California Thom often set his Christmas works within the familiar forested backdrops he knew and loved While some of Thom s Christmas scenes such as St Nicholas Circle and Spirit of Christmas are elaborately decorated for the season other settings like Christmas Lodge are adorned more humbly Christmas scenes with moonlight reflecting off the freshly fallen snow a lamppost lighting the way or a brightly lit windowpane all carry the same message of warmth safety and holiday spirit Thom s Christmas paintings themselves have become family traditions around the world

L ike many of his other subjects Thomas Kinkade focused on painting churches throughout his artistic career As places of worship and celebration Thom s churches have inspired collectors throughout the years Thom painted secluded mountain chapels like Moonlit Village and Winter Chapel iconic cathedrals and even painted a church of deep personal significance the place where he and Nanette were married Blossom Hill Church He was by his own words quite drawn to churches found in beautiful natural settings like Aspen Chapel and Valley Chapel where he painted classic steeples that stood high among the treetops as beacons to all who were in search for a place of devotion Along with steeples Thom s churches often featured traditional porticos welcoming any and all who would enter No matter how remote Thom s churches seem they are never abandoned and are almost always painted with light emanating from within Known as The Painter of Light Thom used light in many ways to symbolize God s presence guidance and connection in our lives

L ike many who are raised in a small town Thomas Kinkade also enjoyed the energy of the city He admired the architectural individuality of each city and was masterful at imagining these cities at different periods of time by including buildings and other structures that marked a city s history Another chronological marker Thom used to set the time period in his cityscapes was the attire of the people featured in the paintings Shopping strolling or driving down the main streets the figures in his cityscapes often took on resemblances to people associated with the venue people in his own life or in a few cases Thom himself Thom painted a number of American city landmark settings over the years such as Central Park in the Fall and Lombard Street San Francisco In these paintings Thom captured each city s distinctive pride and spirit He celebrates each region s beauty and uniqueness through its landmarks

P erhaps the subject Thomas Kinkade is most well known for painting are his cottages Typically humble dwellings where one can imagine a slower pace of life and commune with nature Thom s cottages are always safe and inviting Thom painted numerous collections in this genre many of which were inspired by real life homes such as the Flower Cottages of Carmel This popular collection includes Morning Glory Cottage Hollyhock House Lilac Cottage and Foxglove Cottage His family inspired several more paintings in the Cottage genre Thom paid homage to each of his four daughters and wife with a cottage painted in their honor Everett s Cottage Chandler s Cottage Winsor Manor Evening at Merritt s Cottage and Nanette s Cottage are all loving and sentimental tributes to his family Typically modest cozy and charming Thom painted cottages where he could envision a peaceful life full of family faith and nature The background settings of the cottages are also stunning with natural sun or moonlight providing the source for the luminism and overall tone Often the cottages are lit from within and provide a sense of welcoming and family one of Thom s continued messages

E S tately homes grand American mansions and English manors all detail Thomas Kinkade s great interest in architecture His estates such as the one in Gardens Beyond Spring Gate were tall elegant buildings and each of his properties were whimsically created to serve as the setting for grand parties family dinners and all of life s big and little celebrations For many of his mansion paintings including the Mansions in Paradise collection Thom was inspired by the Biblical verse John 14 2 In my Father s house are many mansions He imagined idyllic landscapes surrounding grand architectural homes where one could celebrate life as God intended During his travels through England Thom discovered several manor houses with compelling architectural detail from which he studied and learned One venue in particular inspired a return visit by both Thom and his wife Nanette Thom s 1991 painting The Autumn Gate of an inviting gated English garden inspired a return to the same location years later On Thom and Nanette s second visit to this location they explored past the gate and gardens to discover an elegant ivy covered stone manor that then became the subject of his 1993 painting Beyond Autumn Gate Morning at Ivycrest Manor

G ardens were among Thomas Kinkade s earliest subjects He continued to study and paint gardens throughout his career and traveled to England France and other parts of the United States that were well known for their gardens in search of new beauty to experience It was in Europe where he noticed the inclusion of statuary and stone in gardens and he soon incorporated these elements into his own creations Over time Thom honed his distinctive gardens with well defined brushwork and great care given to each minute bloom He used very fine brushes to create the base strokes and plant s structure and then laid in the color on top very thickly to suggest dense foliage Thom is said to have painted a dozen or more layers on certain points of his masterworks to create an almost sculptural feeling In many of his garden paintings Thom would paint an abundance of plant life with color spilling over urns and pathways and out of gates in what he called a riotous explosion of color

A master visual storyteller Thomas Kinkade utilized symbols to add depth and meaning to his works of art Among his favorite symbols Thom used gates to represent the choices and discoveries we have yet to make in life Most often Thom s gates are left slightly ajar or wholly open welcoming the next visitor rather than stopping them from passing through As with many of Thom s other genres this type of visual cue triggers curiosity and allows the viewers to place themselves in the scene One underlying theme Thom pursued in the gate genre was to use gates as symbolic thresholds for the changing of seasons or new life These works are represented by Spring Gate Autumn Lane Christmas Gate and Summer Gate and show the glory of the season through their natural flora and vivid color Rose Gate was painted in honor of his infant daughter Winsor Thom studied and painted gates early on in his career and returned to the subject many times From quaint cottage settings to formal entryways of grand mansions Thom painted gates in a wide range of settings many of which proved to rank among his most popular images

H aving grown up in the foothills of California s Sierra Mountains Thomas Kinkade developed a great love and admiration for the outdoors Thom saw the beauty and majesty in the smallest of blooms and in the largest of mountain ranges He painted fields streams forests and mountains as tributes to God s creative bounty Thom painted the Great Outdoors throughout the year and told the story of each season s profound glory Midway through his career Thomas Kinkade looked back and counted several of the nineteenth century American artists as great influences on his landscape style Thom named artists such as Albert Bierstadt Thomas Hill and William Keith as his inspirations These artists traveled the west in pursuit of the ideal vantage points to paint their epic masterpieces Thom also followed this process of traveling to remote destinations and laying down a plein air study These plein air studies were to later become masterfully detailed studio works of art Thom traveled near and far sometimes painting the Great Outdoors he saw before him yet other times creating scenes that he saw in his mind s eye

T homas Kinkade was a deeply spiritual man He let it be known that he was a practicing Christian and that faith was a fundamental part of the art he created Thom used his gifts as an artist to praise God and give tribute to His glory As The Painter of Light Thom s use of light was a continuous allegorical reference to the daily conflict of good battling evil Thom used biblical symbols and created his own representations to give deeper meaning to his paintings Birds at flight represent peace stairways symbolized life s struggles and trails symbolically represented the different paths one s life can take Acknowledging these symbols a Kinkade painting tells a greater story One of Thom s earliest works as a college student The Prince of Peace represented a revelation of his newfound faith From then on the titles Thom gave to his paintings added depth to each painting s story Paintings such as Walk of Faith and Sunrise were allusions to Bible stories and biblical references that stirred Thom s imagination Faith in God throughout his adult life is what drove Thom to continue to spread his message of life affirming Christian values

PLEIN AIR Wailea Chapel 2003 Los Gatos 2003 Tropical Series Image Sizes 18 x 24 25 5 x 34 Image Sizes 16 x 20 24 x 30 I found Wailea Chapel a charming little whitewashed church with a proud steeple not more than a block from the blue Pacific nestled under a stand of palm trees and enveloped in lush tropical flowers I m so very pleased with this witness to the harmony between nature and faith I recently got the chance to paint Los Gatos It was a bright Saturday morning tourists and townsfolk alike indulged in a favorite weekend pass time strolling the avenues and gathering at such favored local breakfast spots as Gilley s Coffee Shoppe Not many make Los Gatos their home perhaps through this painting many who live elsewhere can bring the beauty of Los Gatos home with them A View from Cannery Row Row Monterey 2003 Lake Tahoe Shoreline Winter 2003 Image Sizes 9 x 12 12 x 16 Image Sizes 12 x 16 18 x 24 Plein air painting is a total sensory experience that helps me capture the spirit of a place Cannery Row in Monterey evokes the vibrant energy of the vigorous lifestyle celebrated in John Steinbeck s great novel A View from Cannery Row Monterey expresses all of that in a way only a painting can When I took my family to Tahoe recently I neglected to bring my art supplies As soon as I caught a breathtaking glimpse of the radiant afternoon light on the sapphire jewel of a lake I realized what a mistake I d made I scoured the town for an art supply store and bought several tubes of color The passion with which I worked shows itself in the bold brushwork that brings Lake Tahoe Shoreline Winter to life 181

PLEIN AIR Paci c Grove 1995 Paris St Paris St Mich Michel hell 1995 Image Size 9 x 12 This title is sold out at publisher Image Size 9 x 12 Pacific Grove features a perfect little sand beach on California s north coast Normally it s relaxed and laid back but on the day I visited preparations were underway for the annual Chinese Lantern Festival Crowds of Parisians gathered to watch as I painted the famed boulevard once frequented by Hemingway The crowd seemed to approve of my efforts Some even paid me the compliment of believing I was a Frenchman San Francisco Alcatraz 1995 Luxembourg Gardens 1995 Image Size 12 x 16 Image Size 8 x 10 On the day that I set up my canvas to paint San Francisco this wonderful historic ship was docked in the harbor and tourists crowded the waterfront viewing the island of Alcatraz On Sundays the wonderful formal gardens of Paris fill up with people of all descriptions When I set up my easel at the Luxembourg Gardens a band concert behind me drew a crowd filling the park with music and color 195

I n his earlier years from 1984 to 1990 Thomas Kinkade experimented under the brush name Robert Girrard During this experimentation period he sought complete artistic freedom and employed the styles and techniques used by artists of the French Impressionist movement both in subject matter and brushstroke From his Girrard period Thom s subject matter would often utilize sources of light to suggest the presence of people but without actual figures present in the painting This technique diffused the focus from a defined human figure and allowed the viewers to imagine themselves in the tableau The experimentation and autonomy resulted in numerous breakthroughs and advances in Thom s creative techniques He stretched his artistic skills and over the years Thom s painting styles evolved and became quite distinct His use and play with luminism became more defined and representative Thom started to incorporate multiple sources of light and he would eventually become known as The Painter of Light

U p and down the Pacific Coast Alaska the North Atlantic and indeed all over the world Thom loved to paint seascapes He painted shores harbors lighthouses and quaint coastal towns With these backdrops we can see a calm sea and a quiet sky or a tumultuous storm with power and drama Thom s seascapes span the gamut of weather conditions and gave him the tools to tell wide ranging stories through the metaphorical images of seascapes Thom was able to travel extensively in pursuit of challenging and beautiful vistas but he was always drawn back to the pulse and rhythm of the surf pounding against the shore He would pack his easel and paints and set out to discover remote locations All of his travels added to his understanding and knowledge base from which idealistic scenes like New Horizons were created

symbolize ideas and concepts A reason for this is that allegory has immense power of illustrating complex ideas and concepts in a digestible concrete way A frame component that goes between either the wood outer frame and the art or the linen liner and the art Usually gold though it can be any color or style it serves to add a visual element that highlights the art and gives the eye a smooth
