Algoma University offers students in Timmins the opportunity to earn an Honours Bachelor of Social Work (HBSW) degree, a Bachelor of Arts in Community Development (CD) degree or a Bachelor of Computer Science in Timmins! EARN YOUR DEGREE IN TIMMINS!2Honours Bachelor of Social WorkThe demand for social workers in Canada has risen significantly in recent years, and is even greater in Northern Ontario as demand continues to outpace supply. Employment prospects for social workers are even stronger for those who are interested in working in rural areas and for those who possess cultural skills to work with First Nations’ communities. Algoma U’s HBSW credential was developed in consultation with local employers in Sault Ste. Marie and Timmins, many of whom have cited a growing need for employees with an HBSW. Career paths for graduates include: Social Work, Social Services, (e.g. Counseling, Child Welfare, Addictions, Corrections), Community Development, Private Practice.
Bachelor of Arts in Community DevelopmentThe Bachelor of Arts in Community Development is a three year interdisciplinary degree program that includes required courses in Community Economic & Social Development and Social Welfare. Community development practitioners work alongside people in communities to effect change. They help communities identify common concerns and solutions, and build relationships with organizations and those in positions of power so that everyone can become involved in issues that affect their lives. Community development practitioners often work within a defined geographic area (urban, rural, First Nation), or with specific groups including people with disabilities, youth, children and families, newcomers, the unemployed and/or the homeless. The program includes a 150-hour field placement that will link community development concepts, values, and theories to practice.Career paths for graduates include: local, provincial, and federal government, not-for-profit and cooperative organizations, health and social service agencies, and many more!Bachelor of Computer ScienceThe 3 year (7 semester) dual credential in computer science program jointly delivered by Algoma University and Northern College faculty teaches students the theoretical and practical skills required to succeed in the field of computer science. Students who complete the program will graduate with a diploma in Computer Engineering Technology from Northern College and a Bachelor of Computer Science from Algoma University. Topics covered in the dual credential program include networking, database management, operating systems and software engineering. Career paths for graduates of the dual credential program include software developer, database manager, computer systems analyst, computer network analyst, and website developer.Bachelor of Business Administration (Pending)Algoma University is currently in discussions with Northern College regarding the anticipated introduction of a Bachelor of Business Administration option - stay tuned!algomau.ca/timmins3

Computer Science Dual Credential Program Admission Requirementsalgomau.ca/timminsStudents will be admitted to Northern College based on the current Northern College admission requirements except for the English Language requirement. University Transfers Students transferring from another university may apply to the professional years after completing 60 credits or two years of study. Students transferring from other programs will be assessed individually by the Office of the Registrar and will be subject to the same admission procedures and standards. Students will be required to have a minimum average of 70 percent. In some cases, students will be required to complete core courses required in the first two years of the HBSW program.College Graduates Students who have completed a recognized college diploma may receive course recognition towards the Honours Bachelor of Social Work or Community Development program depending on their GPA and diploma program of study. Students with a college diploma in any discipline are encouraged to apply and will have their transfer credits individually assessed. Students graduating with Social Service Worker, Child and Youth Worker, or Early Childhood Education diplomas from Sault College or Northern College will receive the following transfer credits:University Graduates Students who have completed a recognized university degree with a minimum of 70 percent may apply to the Honours Bachelor of Social Work or Community Development Programs. Students will be required to complete a minimum of 63 credits to complete the requirements of the professional years in Social Work. In some cases, students will be required to complete core courses required in the first two years of the HBSW program before being allowed admission.6
