WHY SOURCE SUSTAINABLY? Deforestation has major impacts reducing biodiversityamong plant and animal species, and affecting thelives of forest-dependent people. We don’t reallyknow what the long term effect of this will be. It alsocauses soil destabilisation with increased risks oflocalised flooding, and landslides. As a company weensure that we are not contributing to illegal loggingand criminal organisations that prevent legitimaterevenue reaching producer countries’ populationsand so denies them the opportunity to improveinfrastructure and living conditions. ENVIRONMENTAL TIMBER POLICYTimber Ireland buying policy is proactively influencedby the environmental responsibility of trading intimber as a renewable, natural resource. Wherepossible, product is sourced from proven, legal andsustainable forests and through this Timber Irelandhas attained the highest levels of independentaccreditation and is FSC certifiedThe Environmental Timber Policy defines the ethicaland responsible conduct that brands should upholdand sets common operating rules. This policy notablycovers timber purchases and sales which couldinvolve specific challenges and risks. It is within thiscontext that the timber policy reflects thecommitment of Timber Ireland which purchase timberproducts from various countries, to be recognised asa responsible business. Timber cladding is so versatile and so much a part of oureveryday life. One of the questions that we’re asked morefrequently is “what is the best wood for external cladding?”. However, identifying the best exterior cladding material foryour project can depend on several factors such as yourbudget, desired appearance and amount of exposure to theelements. The first thing to consider when choosing external timbercladding for your application is whether a hardwood orsoftwood would be better suited to your project. Softwoodsare considered easier to work with and finish and are normallyof a lighter colour, although this will change to a silver/grey ifthe surface is not properly treated over time. Hardwood cladding provides a much darker colour with Irokoand European oak the most popular choice, but like softwood, hardwood cladding materials will weather to a silver/grey if notproperly treated. Timber Ireland's cladding is an environmentally sustainable,low-carbon emitting, aesthetically pleasing material with goodthermal insulation that provides an effective decorativecovering for both exterior building facades and interiors.TIMBERTIMBER

By thermally modifying thesetypes of wood, the lifespan – alsooutside – is considerably extended.Thermal modification is a sustainableprocess in which the wood isprocessed by heat and steam, without the use of chemicals.Thermal modification makes thewoods just as durable as hardwoodwith an average lifespan of 20 years.Thermally modified wood islightweight and is therefore widelyused as facade cladding. It is alsopossible to make a fence out of it orto use it as a wall in your roof.A big difference compared to other garden woodis that thermally modified wood has little woodeffect. Nevertheless, it remains a natural productand there is a small chance of cracks occurring. These do not affect the quality of the wood.1313

Iroko cladding has a distinct yellow colour, buton exposure to light it quickly becomes golden-brown. The sapwood is narrow, being about50mm to 75mm wide, and clearly defined. The grain is usually interlocked and the textureis rather coarse but even, and the wood weighson average 660 kg/m³ when dried. Large, harddeposits of calcium carbonate called ‘stone’deposits, are sometimes present in cavities, probably as a result of injury to the tree. They are often enclosed by the wood and notvisible until the time of sawing, though thewood around them may be darker in colour, thus giving an indication of their presence. Iroko has excellent strength properties, compared well with teak, though weaker inbending and in compression along the grain. SIBERIAN LARCH CLADDINGDespite its hardwood status, Siberian Larch isactually denser than many hardwoods and itprovides plenty of strength and durability. It is one of best timbers for external cladding ifyou’re seeking a traditional style as it has a‘knottier’ appearance that many find appealing. Its colour can vary from yellow shades to richbrowns. Siberian Larch wood takes well to staining andpainting, so it may be the best choice if you’relooking for an exterior cladding material thatcan be customised to your own taste and style.Siberian Larch is another wood that can easilybe nailed and screwed, which makes it a greatoption for any domestic renovations. Once again, the wood will weather to asilver/grey colour over time, but this won’treduce its rustic charm or character.TIMBER CLADDINGwww.timberireland.ie +353 184 27669Units 1-3 Advanced Business Park,Airport road, Cloghran, Co Dublin. DOUGLAS FIR CLADDINGDouglas fir is relatively durable, inherently resilient to fungaldecay and other quality-decreasing factors. With lifeexpectancy of well over 35 years, Douglas fir is regarded as agenerally hardwearing species. Usually with quite a few knotsand larger grain patterns, adding to the overall appearances. These characteristics and possible colour variations are oftenincredibly desirable and what draws timber cladding clientsto Douglas fir.Douglas fir can be sourced from sustainable forests with FSCor PEFC certification, following our environmental policy.Although a softwood, Douglas fir is renowned for its notabledurability, strength and subsequent versatility. Softwoods aregenerally lighter and have a softer surface than hardwoods, yet still maintain comparable levels of strength. Additionally, softwoods are inherently largely resistant to bacteria, termitesand moisture, thus its outdoor applications. Due to itsconsideration as more sustainable wood, softwood accountsfor approximately 80% of timber.TIMBER CLADDINGwww.timberireland.ie +353 184 27669Units 1-3 Advanced Business Park,Airport road, Cloghran, Co Dublin. If you’ve settled on a hardwood cladding then exterior oak is the standoutchoice. The grain of European Oak is normally golden-brown in colour, whichmakes it a popular option for those looking for a more traditional style. Despite this, oak is also favoured for its versatility and is actually available invarious colours with various staining options available, allowing you to create abespoke cladding style that oozes character. Oak is naturally durable but, as you’re probably learning by now, will also turnsilver over time, and this will happen quicker if the wood is left untreated. It machines well, but is tougher to work with than softwoods meaning you mayfind nailing and screwing difficult. Steel screws should also be used as oakreacts with iron.EUROPEAN OAK CLADDINGTIMBER CLADDINGwww.timberireland.ie +353 184 27669Units 1-3 Advanced Business Park,Airport road, Cloghran, Co Dublin. 19BEAMSBEAMSThe superb quality and grading of our Douglas Fir &European Oak beams is a result of careful timbersourcing. The durability of the different species will beentirely dependent on whether the beam is usedinternally or externally, and in which type of applicationand setting. For further information on this, please consult our office. When used externally these species will weather to abeautiful shade of silver grey. When used internally, thecolour will remain fairly consistent over time. Cracks and splits are an inherent characteristic of thebeams, and in no way do they compromise theirstructural integrity. Structural timber has the advantageover most other structural materials of being renewableand also a relatively good thermal insulation material.

Timber is often chosen for its natural beauty and good looks.Exposing the grain can have a dramatic and aestheticallypleasing effect. When choosing a timber species, considerwhat colour you would like for your deck. Enhancing the natural hue of the timber can be achieved byusing a Colourtone. By choosing a shade that matches thenatural colour of the wood, the knots and grains will shinethrough. Building up the colour will make a style statement. Softwood Decking should last at least 15 years if leftunstained or unpainted and hardwood decking can last upto 50 years when given adequate protection in the form of agood stain or oil.23TIMBERTIMBERDECKINGDECKING

REALCEDAR.COMCanadian Western Red Cedar decking looks great and offers extended living space to the outdoors, red cedardecking is naturally more durable than normal softwood treated decking its natural colour variations rangefrom dark browns through to lighter browns, pinks and yellows. Cedar has a long history of use in decking and housing. It’s naturally resistant to rot, decay and insect attacks, and resists moisture absorption, so it tends to last longer, needs less maintenance, and doesn’t warp or split aseasily. A cedar deck can last for 20 years or more, depending on maintenance and environment. Many people are surprised to find out that cedar (and other natural woods) are actually more environmentallysuperior to synthetic products. It has a net negative greenhouse gas effect (it removes these gasses from theatmosphere), and is renewable and biodegradable. It’s also produced from sustainably managed forests, so itdoesn’t degrade our natural forests.CEDAR DECKINGTIMBER DECKINGwww.timberireland.ie +353 184 27669Units 1-3 Advanced Business Park,Airport road, Cloghran, Co Dublin. Massaranduba decking is incredibly versatile. Its durabilitymakes it a natural choice for commercial projects, such ashigh-traffic, large-scale beach piers or boardwalks, or evenpublic benches. Equally, its beauty, striking colour, strength, and low maintenance needs also make it a leading option forresidential decking. A hardwood deck, if installed correctly, should last between15 and 20 years. Thats why a durable hardwood, such asMassaranduba wood is a great choice of timber for youroutdoor living space. Massaranduba, like Ipe, is one of thehardest woods in the world with a Janka Hardness rating ofup to 3,190. Compare that to Oak, at about 1,200. This extreme hardness lends to its dimensional stability, longlifespan, and natural weatherproof properties. NATURAL FENCESTake a look at our range of natural fences. Natural fence panels such as willow fencepanels and Kokowall fence panels have a finer structure and therefore have a friendlyappearance. A natural garden fence is often less noticeable, which fits nicely with anatural and green garden. Another advantage: climbing plants love to grow against it,which also provides natural greenery in the garden.A garden fence is not only beautiful, but also practical. It makes clear where the gardenruns and a high garden fence also provides privacy. Thanks to the wide choice atTimber Ireland you will always find something that suits your garden and taste. You canalso decide for yourself how high and tight the garden fence is. A high and sight-prooffence with garden screens naturally provides a lot of privacy. But if you prefer a moreopen look, there is also plenty to choose from different types of low garden fences inthe form of garden fences or low fences. The fibres areimpregnated with organic colouring agents andchemically bound to one another by a specialresin which lends Valchromat uniquephysicochemical features, allows exploring thethird dimension, the beauty of textures and thebest of engineering.VALCHROMATINTRODUCTION:Additional specifications, sizes, chain of custody and specials are available to orderMade in Valchromat is produced in Portugal. Natural On the surface small wood fibres are visible, fibres which did notabsorb the organic dyes. This peculiarity gives Valchromat itsunique and natural look. Because wood, it’s main raw material, has natural variations in tonality, Valchromat can also showvariations in colour. Moisture Resistant Valchromat is classified as an MDF.HLS, it is a panel that can beused as a structural element to support loads in humidenvironments. Density It has a higher density than a normal MDF, being morehomogeneous throughout the thickness. Mechanical resistance Greater resistance to flexion, elasticity modulus and internalcohesion, which allow its use in structural applications such aspavements supported by beams and structural walls. Ease of Mechanizing / Milling One of the mechanical characteristics that the panel has is theease of being mechanized / milled without crumbling its interior. Lower abrasion of tools When cut, drilled or mechanized / milled it causes less tool wear. Menor Repelo When the panel is varnished or painted, the repulsion that arisesafter applying the finish is minimal.8888

Look’likes is a collection ofreconstituted veneers centredaround the key themes ofcontinuity and creativity. Thecollection combines theadvantages of an imitationwood decor and natural veneer.Contact us to get details of thefull range.‘The OAK collection’ is a response to acontemporary trend in Northern Europe. Peopleare looking to combine authentic materials in theirinteriors with more streamlined, modern elements. Our supplier aims to meet this need by adding anew dimension to its carefully selected European oak. They are doing this by using mixmatchedjointing and giving the surface more structure. Using the ‘Structured wood‘ programme Decospan is working in a creative way. Thanks totheir unique, patented method they can applyunique effects to the wood. By brushing type B1the structure of the wood is more accentuated byremoving the soft summer wood. If you preferthicker veneers (> 1,5 mm) they can offer you thebrushed wood type B2. Here they bring a deepstructure in the direction of the wood grain. Thisstructure can be compared to sandblasting.Furthermore, Decospan is offering 4 differenttypes of ‘scratching’. Through this method, webring structure across the lateral direction of thewood. In this way they obtain unique 3D-patterns.Full range and samples available on request.www.timberireland.ie +353 184 27669Units 1-3 Advanced Business Park,Airport road, Cloghran, Co Dublin. Many of the problems that can beset any woodbased panel products in situ could beavoided if the faces and edges were sealedagainst any moisture absorbtion before beinginstalled. Water penetration can lead to thepremature failure of any woodbased panelproducts. Water is absorbed much faster on theedges of an unprotected panel because most ofthe wood exposed can be end grain. The effectof water penertration through non protectededges/faces can lead to the following faults:1. Edge swelling 2. Discolouration 3. Mould development 4. Staining 5. Delamination 6. Decay It is important to remember that even where afully exterior adhesive has been used inmanufacture repeated wetting and drying of theboard can give rise to splitting, cracking anddelamination. When choosing a sealant the mostimportant factor is that it is impervious to water.Panel products for use in external conditionsSome woodbased panel products can be used indemanding exterior conditions. However, to befully fit for purpose they must be correctlyspecified, installed and maintained. The termexterior use covers a wide range of situationsfrom where the panels may be in contact withwater to where the panels are only subject tooccassional wetting. There are two important concepts to considerwhen specifying a panel product for exterior use:THICKNESS EQUIVALENTS3.6mm/4mm 5.5mm/6mm 9mm12mm15mm 18mm21mm/22mm24mm/25mm27mm30mm 32mm35mm38mm 45mm50mm 1. Service class2. Hazard classService classes are used in structural design to define the environmental conditions in servicewhich affect the mechanical performance of apanel under certain conditions.Hazard clases deal with the risk of biologicalattack. Both of these classes are used to determine the suitability and correct treatment of a product for constructional purposes. The fact that a plywood may have been manufactured with an exterior glue does notmean or imply that it is suitable for long termexposure to exterior conditions. Most situationswill require a durable veneer species along withan effective coating or preservative treatment.Specifying panel products for structural use.The most effective way of specifying a panel product for structural use is to requirecompliance with the harmonized standard BS EN13986. Most panel products that are intendedfor structural use are internationally traded andtherefore are likely to carry a CE mark. Productsthat meet the requirements of the structuralstandards should be markedFLOORS/ROOFS/WALLS. These panels shouldmeet the requirements of BS EN 12871. For aplywood to be CE marked for Service Class 2conditions it must comply with grade EN 636-2S.MULTIPLY BY TO EQUALEQUIVALENT PANEL SIZESwww.timberireland.ie +353 184 27669Units 1-3 Advanced Business Park,Airport road, Cloghran, Co Dublin. MARINE PLYWOOD TO BS1088: 2003PLYWOOD STANDARDS:USEFUL DEFINITIONSMarine Plywood should meet the requirements of BS 1088:2003 (Marine Plywood). BS 1088 comes in two parts, Part 1 (Requirements) and Part 2 (Determination of Bonding Quality UsingKnife Test). The key requirements from part 1 of BS 1088 are highlighted below. However, this is no substitute for purchasing and using the fullversion of the standard.Requirements of manufacture include classification according to panel type, Standard (S) and Lightweight (LW). Standard marine plywood has veneers possessing outstandingdurability with respect to fungal decay andbonding quality making it suitable for marineconstruction while lightweight marine plywoodis of veneers from timber species of lowerdensity/ durability than those in standard marineplywood while all other requirements remain thesame. Veneer DurabilityStandard marine plywood as defined in BS 1088should have outstanding resistance to bio-deterioration (durability) with time. Thebiological durability of marine plywood isexpected to be greater than that of plywood ofthe same species that meets the requirements ofBS EN 636-3. In this respect, Standard marineplywood should be made throughout of timbershaving a durability rating of class 3, BS EN 350-2,or better and a nominal density of > 500kg/m3and up to 5% sapwood per veneer is permitted. Number and thickness of pliesAccording to BS 1088, Marine Plywood panels having a thickness of 6.5mm or less should have three or more plies. Panels having a thickness ofgreater than 6.5mm should have five or moreplies. With 3-ply panels, the combined thicknessof the two outer plies after sanding should bebetween 40% and 65% of the nominal unsandedthickness of the panel. With 5-ply panels, thecombined thickness of the two outer plies aftersanding, combined with those of the core andother inner plies with their grain direction parallelto the outer plies, should be between 40% and65% of the nominal unsanded thickness of thepanel. Additionally, for panels with nominalthicknesses of greater than 3.8mm, each outerply should not be less than 1mm thick aftersanding and each inner and core ply should notbe more than 4.8mm thick. Manufacturing DefectsIn accordance with BS 1088, all marine panels should not contain any of the following manufacturing defects: open joints (e.g. coregaps, overlaps and pleats, blisters, hollows, bumps and imprints), roughness (other than thatdue to the irregular structure of the wood),sanding through, foreign particles, defects in theedges of panels (e.g. due to sanding, sawing, missing wood). Bonding QualityAll marine plywood as defined in BS 1088 should have outstanding resistance to loss of bondstrength with time. When tested in accordancewith BS EN 314-1, the bonding quality shouldmeet a minimum requirement of BS EN 314-2,Bonding Class 3.MarkingPanels conforming to BS 1088 should beindelibly marked on the back or edge with thefollowing information in the order shown:1) The number and date of the BritishStandard “BS 1088-1:2003” and the word“MARINE”2) The word “UNBALANCED” if panels are of unbalanced construction3) The word “TREATED” if there has been any application of preservative treatment4) The nominal panel thickness5) The manufacturer’s name or ID mark6) The country of manufacture7) The panel type (Standard (S) or Lightweight (LW))8) The name of the timber species according to BS EN 350-2:1994In addition, the documentation for eachconsignment of panels should include themarking information above and a list of all thespecies used in their construction and details ofany preservative treatment which has beenapplied.Plywood is produced in accordance with nationaland European standards. These standards ensurean appropriate marketing of the plywood.1. These standards are in general equivalent to thecorresponding European standards.EN 314-2:1993 Plywood — Bonding Quality, classifies plywood by bonding quality only and gives rise to 3 bond classes dependent uponthe intended end use. Bonding quality isdetermined by the adhesive type and coreveneer quality (physical defects such as knotholes and splits).(Bond) Class I: suitable for dry interior use only(Bond) Class II: suitable for use in humid areas orexposure to occasional wetting(Bond) Class III: suitable for unprotected exterior use or exposure to frequent wettingFollowing exposure to a simulated hostileweather environment, accelerated in alaboratory, plywood is tested to destruction toassess how well the bond has survived theweathering process. Once bonding quality hasbeen established to EN314, assessment toEN636 can begin. EN 636: 2003, Plywood—Specifications, classifies plywood by taking into account thebond quality AND the biological durability* ofthe wood species used in the plywood:EN636-1: suitable for dry interior use onlyEN636-2: suitable for use in humid areas orexposure to occasional wettingEN636-3: suitable for unprotected exterior useor exposure to frequent wettingEN314 and EN636 are harmonised standards,so, to achieve EN636 Class II (frequentlylabelled EN636-2) the bonding quality, as aminimum, must be EN314 Class II. Someplywoods have a bonding quality of EN314Class III but, because of limited biologicaldurability of the timber species, can onlyachieve EN636-2. This is precisely the case withsoftwood plywood. It is worth bearing in mind that, provided theEN314 bonding is Class III to start with, anotherwise EN636-2 plywood can be upgradedto EN636-3 by preservative treatment, totreatment class T3 (DD CEN/TS 1099:2007).Most of the plywood sold in the UK will achieve EN314 Bond Class III yet, when assessed toEN636, will achieve EN636-2, because of limitedbiological durability of the wood. Exceptions tothis might include Tropical HardwoodThroughout Plywood and Marine GradePlywood, provided no sapwood is present.Sapwood is, however, difficult to eliminate. * Biological Durability means: the naturalcapacity of the wood to resist the detrimentaleffects of fungal decay (rot) and beetle larvae(woodworm).TECHNICAL INFORMATIONwww.timberireland.ie +353 184 27669Units 1-3 Advanced Business Park,Airport road, Cloghran, Co Dublin. K67C6Y7SPECIFYINGCONSTRUCTIONALPLYWOODPLYWOOD AND OSB INCONSTRUCTION: INTRODUCTIONPlywood for Exterior use is also available butmay be less cost effective as both the resins andthe wood veneers within the product must bedurable in the long term. There is also a specialtype of exterior Plywood called Marine Plywoodwhich has its own British standard BS 10882003, and as the name suggests must bedurable enough to endure regular exposure toextreme weather conditions. However, MarinePlywood rarely has proof of strengthperformance provided by the supplier and soshould not be used load bearing constructionuses, unless this strength data is provided.SPECIFYING CONSTRUCTIONAL OSBCONSTRUCTIONPRODUCTS REGULATIONPlywood is a widely used and well provenconstruction material made from a combinationof wood veneers and resins.Oriented Strand Board (OSB) is an alternativeto plywood in a variety of structural and non-structural applications. It is made from longstrands of wood bonded together with asynthetic resin adhesive. Both products are available with full structuraldata and sustainable credentials. There are two types of Constructional Plywood:Structural Plywood: Structural Plywood hasproof of strength performance provided by theSupplier in addition to other productperformance information General Plywood:General Plywood has product performanceinformation provided by the supplier but this willnot include strength performance data and soshould not be used in a structural application. Both types of constructional plywood can beused in the three end use classes for plywooddefined in the European Standard EN 636 asshown in below. The standard specifies the requirements forplywood for general purposes or structuralapplication in dry, humid or exterior conditions.Exterior Use - Permanently outside exposed tothe weather:Structural EN 636-3 SGeneral EN 636-3 GHumid Use - Most construction uses fall into this category as they are covered or rarely exposedto weather, but still at risk of wetting: Structural EN 636-2 SGeneral EN 636-2 G Dry Use - Interior with no risk of wetting: Structural EN 636-1 SGeneral EN 636-1 GThe most common types of plywood availablefor use in UK construction are structural plywoodfor humid uses (EN 636-2S) and generalplywood for humid uses (EN 636-2G). Thesetypes of plywood are made from durable resinswhich are suitable for most construction uses.Constructional OSB comes in four grades(technical classes) as defined in the EuropeanStandard EN 300 and shown in the table below. The standard specifies the requirements for OSBfor general purposes or structural applications indry and humid conditions. Selection of a grade ofload-bearing panel is dependent upon theambient climatic conditions together with thelevel of loading that is anticipated.OSB 1 - General purpose boards and boards for interior fitments (including furniture) for use in dryconditions. This should not be used in a structuralapplication.OSB 2 – Load-bearing boards for use in dry conditions.OSB 3 – Load-bearing boards for use in humid conditions.OSB 4 – Heavy duty load-bearing boards for usein humid conditions. As with structural plywood, Structural OSB (OSB/2/3/4) has proof of strength performance provided by the supplier in addition to otherproduct performance information. As with plywood, OSB that is used in construction must comply (by law) with the ConstructionProducts Directive (CPD) and the recommendedway to achieve this is by compliance with theHarmonised Standard for wood-based panels(EN13986); this standard calls up EN 300 for OSB.A ‘CE’ logo may be present as an indication thatthe OSB meets the requirements of the EuropeanStandard EN 13986.The construction industry is facing the most significant change for a decade in the way inwhich construction products are sold in Europe. From 1 July 2013, under the ConstructionProducts Regulation (CPR), it will becomemandatory for manufacturers to draw up adeclaration of performance and apply CEmarking to any of their construction productswhich is covered by a harmonised Europeanstandard for wood based panel productsEN13986 when such a product is placed on themarket. By definition a construction product isany product which is produced and placed onthe market for incorporation in a permanentmanner in construction works or parts thereofand the performance of which has an effect onthe performance of the construction works withrespect to the basic requirements for onstructionworks. This is a major change as affixing of CEmarking under the provisions of the existingConstruction Products Directive (CPD) iscurrently voluntary in the UK. For those alreadyCE marking under the CPD the transition shouldbe straightforward. This publication is intendedas a guide to the implications of CE markingunder the CPR for manufacturers, importers, distributors, specifiers, certification and testbodies, and regulatory/enforcement authorities. The Regulation is directly applicable in UK law.The CPR builds upon the CPD and aims to breakdown technical barriers to trade in constructionproducts within the European Economic Area(EEA). To achieve this, the CPR provides for fourmain elements:• a system of harmonised technical specifications• an agreed system of conformity assessment for each product family• a framework of notified bodies• CE marking of products. The CPR harmonises the methods of assessment and test, the means of declaration of product performance and the system of conformity assessment of construction products, but NOT national building regulations. The choice ofrequired values for the particular intended use isleft to the regulators and public / private sectorprocurers at the national level. However, suchrequired values must be expressed in aconsistent manner (technical language) as usedin the harmonised technical specifications.113113

Charring protectsthe wood against external factors and givesit a unique look. The combination of wood and fire not onlycreates a beautiful composition, but alsoensures extraordinary durability. The board'scan be used as a decorative element forcladding facades, walls, ceilings and fences.Production takes place in a controlled manner– piece by piece – in special furnaces thatensure even and uniform ring parameters. Ourteam is constantly committed to developingnew methods of carbonizing, finishing, selecting new types of wood and creating newproducts.www.timberireland.ie +353 184 27669Units 1-3 Advanced Business Park,Airport road, Cloghran, Co Dublin.
