1Later on this month, we will read from the Torah about the commandment to give the land of Israel a chance to rest once every seven years. This cycle of sh’mitah, also known as a Sabbatical year, is still observed in modern times with the next one taking place in the year 5789. Although Jewish tradition has come to include methods and loopholes for continuing to work the land and grow crops even during these Sabbatical years, the concept of regular and standardized rest continues to be part of Jewish life. Of course the most important and substantial example is Shabbat itself, it being one day of rest in each seven day work week.I cannot say exactly when this started, but another way this idea of including standardizedextended time for rest and recuperation in our Jewish lives has been the idea of sabbatical timefor clergy. While the timing works according to the agreements between clergy andcongregation and not a standard “one year in seven” formula, its inclusion presents a sacredopportunity for a clergy person to have an extended “Sabbath”.I mention this because between June 1 and August 31, I will be blessed to experience the firstthree months of my own sabbatical time (three other months will follow at some point(s) in thenext couple of years). Having watched my own father work for many years in the pulpit withoutever enjoying the blessing of a sabbatical time, I am fully aware of the incredible gift that thisis. I also appreciate beyond words how it reflects the nature of this incredible synagogue whichplaces such high value on the well-being of its clergy. I believe with all my heart that RabbiBraver felt the same way after his sabbatical last summer and that Rabbi Berman and CantorChomsky felt these same feelings having enjoyed their own sabbatical periods during thetenures at Congregation Tifereth Israel.ShaiDeanMateoBearService TimesWe start morning minyan at 7:20 am when Rosh Chodesh falls on a weekday: Wednesday,May 28, Thursday, June 26, and Friday, June 27. Coordinating travel schedules that include asession at camp, a trip to several countries in Europe with camp, everyones’ eventual arrival inIsrael and then our own European adventure is a testament to Sharon’s incredible ability tokeep all our schedules at the front of her mind. But we are beyond excited for theopportunities this time offers us and cannot wait to tell you about it when we get back. My unending thanks to our incredible staff at Tifereth Israel for their friendship andprofessionalism which sends me off on my sabbatical time without a moment’s pause of howthings will be here while I’m away. Of course that feeling is only possible because of theamazing partnership I enjoy with Rabbi Braver and with Nancy Gurwin to whom I am indebtedin ways I cannot begin to describe. And finally my thanks to all of you and to the amazing layleadership of our congregation. I know how blessed I am and I thank you all for this amazingopportunity.Wishing you all a wonderful summer,Rabbi Hillel Skolnik
My family and I have been a part of the Tifereth Israel family for a very long time. Whether we choose to attend on a regular basis or just occasionally, it still feels like home.My husband, Allen, started regularly attending morning Minyan when Rabbi Zelizer was the rabbi. As Sisterhood president, I welcomed Rabbi Harold and Beth Berman to our community. Cantor Chomsky asked Allen to make the curtain that still encloses the Ark. Our children were called to the Torah as B’nai Mitzvah here. We’ve had many life cycle events at Tifereth Israel; some joyous and some very sad. My becoming a Bat Mitzvah recently was one of great joy for me and my family. It was wonderful to be able to celebrate with our Tifereth Israel family.6Purim and Pesach are behind us. The Board of Trustees has approved our budget for the 2025-26 fiscal year. The school year is coming to an end. Your children will be attending summer camp and families will soon be going on their summer vacations. The Red Sea has parted in our weekly Parsha and we are well into the counting of the forty-nine days of the Omer. And the Blue Jackets season is over, although they finished with a better record than the Rangers (sorry, Rabbi Hillel and Liav, I couldn’t resist). It would seem to many that Tifereth Israel is now in its “slow season”. In many ways, we are. Inother ways, we will remain as vibrant and busy as always in the months ahead, before we startramping up for the High Holidays. In addition to our usual Shabbat and weekday services, and Adult Jewish Learningprogramming, we have a few fun things coming up for all to enjoy. First is our annual meetingon Tuesday, May 6. Please join us for evening Minyan at 5:30, memorial service, and themeeting, in which we will welcome the new members to our Board of Trustees. Our ExecutiveBoard remains the same for the next year, which means you will have to continue to put up withmy bad jokes during my Shabbat announcements. On Friday, May 16, we will have our Lag BaOmer Kabbalat Shabbat and Cookout at BlendonWoods – Dogwood Shelter House. Please join us for delicious hotdogs (hopefully charred),cookies and other goodies. Two days later, on Sunday, May 18, is the 2025 rendition of ouralways fun Spotlight event, in which we will pretend that we’re on a cruise in the choppy watersof the Tifereth Israel social hall. Please refer to this addition of the Forum for additionalinformation regarding these events. Our Officers, Board of Trustees, and staff will continue to work, behind the scenes, on severalinitiatives that are intended to continue and grow the great momentum that we enjoy, as wellas strengthening our future. You will hear more about these initiatives in the months ahead. As always, please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any questions or concerns to discusswith me.
