In 1999, while visiting Gerda Flöckinger CBE in London, we were introduced to a just published book titled The Ring, a lavishly illustrated survey of rings from antiquity to the present by Sylvie Lambert (Rotovision, 1999).

This book, with Lambert’s encouragement and support, became the impetus and inspiration for Mobilia Gallery’s exhibition,The Ring, presented in Cambridge. Massachusetts in February 2001, along with a traveling exhibition derived from it. The exhibition traveled to : The Racine Art Museum, Racine Wisconsin, The Colorado Springs Fine Arts Center, Colorado Springs, CA and The Ruthin Craft Center, Wales. The result was an exhibition of 149 artists from all over the world, presenting 149 unique sensibilities, each with a different interpretation of the meaning of "a ring”.

Our passion for the significance of the ring has never subsided. We invited 50 artists to participate in our new, vibrant exhibition, The Reverent Ring. We invite you to explore each artist's unique vision and interpretation, illuminating the power and beauty of the object of adornment.

Silver and nylon fins in various sizes and configurations provide a sense of motion and flux in direct contrast to specimens captured in glass and cotton. Through a process of placing, responding, fitting, and adjusting, a topography of fins and planes is revealed. The attention shifts from a static, emotionally based object to a fleeting moment that cannot be pinned down. Shadows are cast, and move with time or presentation of the work. Light pools, reflects, and highlights. All the while, crafted domes of color and evocative scents offer a moment of pause amidst a dynamic, moving environment.

When I tried to express myself and Japanesenesswith the theme, the first thing that came to my mind was the teaching of reincarnation in Buddhism.Buddhism that was introduced to Japan changed its content to make it easier for the common people to understand, in order to disseminate its doctrines, and divided into many sects, becoming the current Japanese Buddhism. The content of the doctrine differs depending on the sect, but all sects have reincarnation as the premise of the doctrine. In Buddhism, reincarnation is the transfer of the work of recognition, and after the death of life, the energy of recognition disappears, a new similar energy is born in another place. The energy that disappeared and the energy that was newly born are different things, but the consciousness is inherited. In other words, when one mind disappears after the death of life, a new mind that closely resembles the previous mind is created immediately afterwards. It is born in Rikudo(6 classes of beings), one of the six worlds, depending on what you did during your lifetime and this process continues.I think Buddhism is the concept of how the mind works, and this concept is the root of Japanese culture, and Japanese temperament.

$10,800

"Asterism" is a three-finger ring inspired by the patterns of the star. In astronomy, an asterism is a remarkable figure drawn by particularly bright stars. In my jewelry designs, the sky has always been a source of great inspiration. The magnificent and mysterious Milky Way and the celestial constellations are the roots of my creativity for the aesthetic choice I made in this design.

"Flöckinger’s pioneering work, exhibited at the ICA from as early as 1954, effectively opened the debate on the recognition of jewellery as a serious art form. Her experimental course at Hornsey College of Art, established in 1962, marked a watershed in the regeneration of British jewellery design with its groundbreaking focus on the interplay between design and technique. This innovative approach fundamentally influenced the subsequent direction of jewellery. In the mid-1960s her work developed an intensely individual character which has been meticulously refined over the years. Her signature controlled fusion of gold and silver, a daring tour de force, is a unique contribution to the development of new techniques. Flöckinger’s jewellery glories in lavishly encrusted surfaces embellished with sinuous wires, scatters of granules, exuberant pendant drops. Stones glint in tiny molten landscapes; pale matt metal heightens the iridescent gleam of pearls. Meticulous control and an intense emotional involvement with the work enable an impossibly fine balance between line, texture, metal and stone; yet the result appears stunningly effortless. Sensual, fluid, tactile, her jewellery gives immense pleasure to both wearer and viewer. Instinctive artist, consummate creator, she is passionately individual in all aspects of her creativity.”

Former Curator of of Modern Jewelry and Curator of Mediterranean Archaeology

at the National Museum of Scotland, Edinburgh, U.K. (1983-2008).

This ring is part of the “Metamorphosis” collection. I used the butterfly motif to create this ring. Actually, it can be seen better if upside down. Inside the “flower”, there is a small butterfly heading towards its center, to the “stomach”, which I believe that is an important part of our bodies. This work is to share happiness and heal hardship. It has a strong “sprit” that protects those who wear it and makes them feel happy.

The flower is always in the almond

-Henri Bosco

Like an almond shell enfolding its precious seed, a gift of hope from Mother Earth, this ring nestles a seed, the seed of self-knowledge. I learned to read at a young age, 3 or 4; it was clear to me early on that the cover to a book is a doorway, a portal that opens to worlds and potentialities whose unwritten words told the most interesting story, the one that existed at the edge, the periphery of my mind, something familiar but one that I couldn't quite remember. And so I was always searching. Much later, I would realize that I am the book that I was seeking, a sacred book written in the language of earth, ocean, sky and love.

I knew that there was a wing hidden in the heart of things.
 -Guy Lavaud

I miniaturized that book into a ring, its cover a multi-windowed entryway, an invitation to cross the threshold to an inner horizon of magical journeys, memories, spirit animals and dreams. Mapped in the ancient time-telling way of following sun shadows, I offer this souvenir locket, fully furnished from the borderlands, the realm of the mind's eye, the third eye and the curious and wondering visionary healing terrain of the inner child.

Mineri Matsuura is inspired by Japanese architecture, nature, art, and the influence of zen buddhism. Her flat cut pieces are  transformed into three dimensional forms, “similar to the metamorphis of a caterpillar turning into a butterfly. I am always amazed to view the various new forms that are  created. A zen like feeling of reawakening, new three dimensional forms  developing from such a simple process”.

These accessories are made of special paper seen in the “Tanabata Matsuri,” or the Star Festival, which is a Japanese traditional event. They transform themselves from two-dimensional shapes into three-dimensional form. Since I was a little child I have been fascinated that with the form of this paper. The harmony created these delicate pleats evokes the sweet and pleasant memories of my childhood and the days when I played with my little daughters. we can neatly open and close these accessories using magnets.

"I work in a relatively classic manner with body-related stories, and to this end, experiment with methods and techniques that enable this narrative.

Part of the story I work around is adornment. For me there is something archaic in our human urge to adorn ourselves, something primal in jewelry - lust for gold and glitter - which for me is closely coupled to a zest for life.

I often work with a frame story in which my jewellery exists. They are rarely alone… Much of my work therefore assumes the character of a story."

"I've been enamoured with the idea of poison rings for many years, but preferred to elevate the idea to what I called 'Passion Rings', featuring a lockable hinged pod... This ring is as far as I've extended the idea, with its three neutral compartments, which could contain substances for either poison or passion, medication or malfeasance...

I hollow-fabricated the ring from sterling silver chenier tubing, into a square geometric annulus, initially entirely sealed, then divided it diagonally and resealed the two halves with gold bulkheads to yield two compartments, which I then tapped and threaded to house the spatula for powder, and the hinged lockable pod for pills, which also stoppered the compartment for potion.

The spatula in this ring has a garnet bullet finial; the hinged pod is set with a rose-cut black spinel which I faceted; it looks to be gimballed, but that is an illusion... I've shot-set two tiny green Tsavorite garnets into its stirrup."

Over the years I've often made something commemorative, and was surprised that nothing seems to have been done to mark the discovery of Tut's tomb in contemporary jewellery. Considering that event's influence on the history of design, and the leadup to Art Deco, I couldn't let the opportunity pass un-noted.

Amun represented the traditional panoply of gods and deities, and Tut's name was eventually restored to Tutankhamun, but was originally Tutankhaten, in accordance with his 'heretic' father's - Akhenaten's - overthrow of the traditional order in favour of the sun god, Ra.

I've symbolised the Amun with the pyramids, and the Aten with the solar disc: in the ring 'Amun', I've cut and set a large black Spinel pyramid, replicating the angle 53 degrees at which the pyramids were built, and set it upon a structure of triangle, circle, and square, referencing the side and the plan of the pyramid (triangle and square), as well as the solar disc (the circle).

In the ring 'Amun-Aten' I've diminished and abraded (that took some iconoclastic courage) the symbol of the pyramid, as the disc of the sun ascends (represented by the Topaz sphere I faceted); and finally, in the ring 'Aten' I've dispensed with the symbol of the pyramid altogether, banished in favour of setting a large orange disc of Topaz only, which I faceted to represent Ra.

"I use stone and metal, always considering new representation. many often, modern social, urban, living things, natural inspired by. The world is composed of various elements that come together everyday to form a balanced world. The brilliance and vulnerability of those elements are factors that we mustn't overlook. I cannot help but to be persuaded every time I see the magnificence of metal and a stone's character, shine, weight, strength, transience and value. However, their beauty and especially scarcity has remained source of jealousy and dispute throughout years.  This is also what fascinates me about them."

U “Uccello Horse”

There has probably never been a breed of horse more forbidding and terrifying of aspect than the monstrous war-stallions used by the condottiere of the Renaissance, when horse and rider really did become a creature greater and more deadly than the Centaurian sum of its parts. These fierce steeds were depicted in stone, bronze, and paint, by many of Italy’s great artists, but there is something about Uccello’s profoundly involved, and at the same time intellectually distanced, vision of warfare (at least as shared with us through the three stunning panels of ‘The Battle of San Romano’) which gives the animals something of the discreet, almost hygienic, formality of heraldic beasts, without sound or smell – for there is no dust in these perfectly designed arenas, seeming to respond more to the fatal rules of perspective than to those of conflict.

My “Uccello horse” is not mounted by his owner, but is, himself, borne instead. The strong Roman features, which may lack the neurotic concavities of Arab equine beauty, do, however, bear exotic trappings well. These I have been able to bestow happily, and they include a large white triangular diamond, and a small round diamond with hues of pink. Thus, the fiercest of martial creatures is persuaded by man to wear jewellery and ornament – what Peter Schaffer, in his play ‘Equus’, so memorably called “chinkle chankle”.
