To an extent, I have found that to be true. Certainly, I have never found it to be a daunting task to make my way to Marist High School during my 27 years here.It is the work that has excited me. The challenge to meet the needs of students, think outside the box in terms of curriculum and facilities, and keep our Catholic, Marist mission at the heart of what we do has pushed me to continue learning, growing, and praying. Loving work is a part of my DNA and a part of the foundation of the Marist Brothers’ philosophy. And loving work is something we aim to instill in our students as we encourage them to pray more, dig deeper, ask questions, train harder, and explore their talents. Of course, none of our “work” could be done without the amazing partners we have. Our faculty and sta, students, parents, alumni, and supporters are integral to our continued success and growth. After all, many hands make light work. I invite you to continue or to start working with us as we make Jesus known and loved among young people while preparing them for higher education and life. Fall 20247School NewsTHIS SUMMER, Marist was fortunate enough to have a new mural painted in the upstairs hallway outside of our coun-seling department. The artist, Thomas Fleming, met with the counseling department and administration to brainstorm aspects of the mural that symbolize Marist. Thomas brought this vision to life, and we are so grateful for him sharing his talents, making our hallways a little more colorful and vibrant. Some specific aspects of the mural that give a nod to Marist life are: • The water/river/stones are symbolic of La Valla and the Hermitage.• The Chicago skyline & four stars of the Chicago ag pay homage to Marist Chicago.• The buttery symbolizes growth and hope.• “Don’t fret” written in the top right corner. This saying is something Brother Vito Aresto, FMS used to say to bring comfort, peace, calmness to those he worked with and his students. • The tree is symbolic of strength and interconnectedness. Marists of Champagnat USAMARISTS OF CHAMPAGNAT USA is a community of lay women and men and consecrated religious brothers who together are living out the Marist spirituality inherited from St. Marcellin Champagnat. All Marists of Champagnat seek to grow in communion, following Mary’s example of making Jesus known and loved in our world. They support each other through continual formation experiences that allow anyone who wishes to be “Gathered Around the Same Table” to find a place. Each year, lay women and men who are interested in exploring their commitment to living out the Marist Charism are invited to participate in a cohort that takes place over a 6-month period. Marist Brothers are invited to join these cohorts as well. Cohort participants are paired with companions (former cohort participants and/or Marist Brothers) who journey with the participants as they join together in prayer services, a webinar series and spiritual dialogue throughout the cohort process. The process culminates with a commitment ceremony in June. Members of Marists of Champagnat continue to engage in ongoing formation, as well as live out the Marist Mission through service and shared life experiences in local groups as theyll as Province-wide events. The Point 8School NewsItalian Exchange Fall 2024 BY ALESSIA ZULATO, ITALIAN TEACHER & MODERATOR OF THE ITALIAN NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY FROM SEPTEMBER 20th-29th, 15 Marist students enrolled in the Italian program and their families welcomed in their home students from Istituto San Leone Magno, the Marist school in Rome. During this time, they showed them all the great attractions of Chicago, they took them to their favorite restaurants and malls for shopping, and shared their everyday life in every aspect, including school. The Italian students shadowed them during the school day when not sightseeing around Chicago. They worked together during Italian class. They watched Marist football, soccer and volleyball games. While this is undoubtedly a great experience for our Italian guests who got to experience American life and culture rst hand, it is also extremely enriching for our Marist students. Sharing your own culture and habits with someone from a dierent country, and making constant eorts to adapt to them, is indeed a dicult but worthwhile thing to do in order to become a well-rounded world citizen. Marist students will get to visit Rome and stay with their peers’ families during Spring Break 2025. This second part of the exchange program represents for them a great chance to explore the great city of Rome, and to apply in the real world what they have learned in the classroom during the past three or four years. They learned how to order in a restaurant, how to buy clothes and food, how the public transportation system works: once in Rome, they will get to do all of these and more! From the teacher’s perspective, I really enjoy observing the American and the Italian students interacting and learning from each other. I am very happy that at Marist High School we provide this chance to our students. They will create memories that will last a lifetime, and friendships that cross borders. Champagant Award WinnersTHE CHAMPAGNAT FACULTY AWARD recognizes those who share similar traits with St. Marcellin Champagnat, the founder of the Marist Brothers, and who embrace their roles at the school as a vocation. This year’s award winners were chosen by previous Champagnat Award winners and the Marist Brothers. In addition to exhibiting Marist and Marcellin-like qualities, award winners must have served at Marist for at least ten years. Receiving the award for 2024 were Karen Laurencell, Mary Barry, and Ron Dawczak ’93. The family of recently deceased, beloved longtime Marist sta member Kathy Majka received the award on her behalf.

Fall 20249Alumni FeatureRobert Stoettner ’88 appreciates structure. It’s one of the benets he respects from his days at Marist High School. A product of the public schooling system through junior high, he selected Marist, in part, due to its college prep reputation. And that’s just what he found there. Looking back, he feels the school’s structured learning environment, along with the discipline, helped prepare him for college and beyond. “Just knowing Mr. Al Brazen was there was enough for me,” Rob recalled. The dedicated teachers inuenced him, too. Br. Lawrence Hanshumaker had a signicant impact on Rob. The computer lab at Marist was not only a new facility, but a new area of learning. “Br. Hanshumaker introduced me to computers,” Rob said. “ I spent a lot of free time in the lab and took some classes, too.” Rob’s love of structure introduced to him the world of accountancy. After Marist, he attended Northern Illinois University — a school well-known for its accounting program. Rob felt prepared for college-level coursework. “Having attended Marist, I was without a doubt ready for classes at Northern.” He became a CPA and joined RSM, an audit, tax, and consulting rm, where he still works. Today, Rob is an audit partner, overseeing much of the operations side of the rm’s auditing services. Rob reconnected with Marist after his son played for Bryan Tucker at Barrington High School. Tucker was a former faculty member, and coach at Marist from 1988-1996, and is the brother of Larry Tucker ’79, president at Marist. Rob and his wife of 25 years, Gillian, live in Barrington Hills. Their two children attend the University of Iowa. For Jim Moran ’84, attending Marist High School was formative in more ways than one. Yes, he beneted from the academic preparation, but he also continued his Christian formation while a student. Fr. Tom Dunn invited him to prepare for the Sacraments of Confession and Holy Communion. “I took him up on his oer and always loved chapel with my class-mates thereafter,” Jim said. “It seems like such a small thing now but it was a huge thing for me at that age.”Jim’s commitment to his faith still shapes him today and he believes Marist continues to do the vital work of making Jesus known and loved among young men and women. “Marist, more than any other cause I contribute to, shares my exact values, develops young people, and prepares them to go out and be soldiers for Christ in a world that needs those soldiers more than at any time in my lifetime,” Jim said. The son of a Chicago Police ocer and Chicago Public Schools clerk, Jim paid his own way through Marist. Today, to help more young people experience Marist, Jim has been a supporter of the nancial aid program. Jim’s goal is to support students who might otherwise not be able to attend or continue studying at Marist due to nancial hardship. “In that way, I am also supporting those parents who are like my own; hard-working, good, faith-lled people who want the best for their children and others,” Jim explained. “I realize it is prob-ably not possible anymore for students to pay their own way through Marist and I would like to narrow that gap.”Jim is condent that his Marist experience continues to shape him today. “My desire to continue working beyond nancial need is driven by my desire to give,” he said. “I believe the main values that I learned at Marist are unselsh-ness, giving, being purposeful, and developing others.”After Marist, Jim earned a Bachelor of Arts degree with concentrations in Finance and Economics from the University of Illinois, Champaign-Urbana. He moved to Dallas, Texas, and has built a 30+ year career that includes investment and operational roles in public markets, commercial real estate, entrepreneurship, and private equity. Today, he is a fund manager and partner with emerging investment fund Pishon Capital. Jim is happily married to his wife Bridgette, and has two grown children, Colin (25) and Kyra (24) who are graduates of the University of Colorado. He is also a supporter of Fellow-ship of Christian Athletes and his local cancer charity in Crested Butte, Colorado. Jim Moran ’84Robert Stoettner ’88

The Point 10Alumni Feature“You can help people when your heart is set on re and you’re in alignment with who you’re meant to be,” JP Abercrumbie ’09 said. That mindset helped her build a career in college athletics, where she works to leverage sports to help people and organizations become the best versions of themselves. JP serves as the Executive Associate Athletic Director for Culture, Engagement, and Civic Innovation at the University of Notre Dame. In this role, JP is responsible for leading organ-izational and team culture, diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives, talent recruitment, development and retention initiatives, mission and civic engagement programs, and various strategic partnerships. When she started her work there in early 2022, she was charged with evaluating the Notre Dame Athletics existing social engagement program, StaNDTogether. Through her eorts and outreach, “Together Irish” was born and focuses on education, engagement, and enrichment for student-athletes, coaches, faculty, sta, fans, supporters, and community members to create sustain-able progress and change. JP notes that the program aims to respond to issues in a way that is true to Notre Dame’s values, mission, and Catholic social teaching. While at Marist, JP was very engaged, competing for four years on the basketball, track and eld, and cross country teams. She was also a member of the National Honor Society and Spanish National Honor Society and served as a Student Ambassador. JP notes several coaches and teachers who made an impact on her while at Marist. “There were so many positive moments,” she recalled. “And there were so many people–who through the gateway of sports–helped me gure out who I wanted to become.” After Marist, JP earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from Temple University where she was a four-year member of the track and eld program and maintained leadership roles in several student organizations. JP obtained a Master of Arts in Cultural Studies of Sport in Education from the University of California, Berkeley, and has also earned additional certicates in her eld from other institutions. She has worked at notable colleges and universities across the country including the University of California at Berkeley, Mississippi State University, and Rice University. She held a variety of positions, with a focus on student-athlete development, wellness, internal and external engagement, as well as program fundraising. She has spoken at a variety of conferences and webinars on the national and international stage, and enjoys service on several industry committees, including work with professional sports entities like the NFL. Her work for Notre Dame earned her the 2023 ACC UNITE Award from the Atlantic Coast Conference and led to the University winning the 2024 NCAA-MOAA Diversity & Inclusion [National Championship].
