Communicants come forward to receive the elements. Those serving Communion will cleanse their hands immediately before serving. Communicants will rst receive the bread, then dip it into the red wine or the white grape juice, and then eat it. • Gluten free wafers and individual sealed, pre-packaged communion kits are also available. If you need communion brought to you in your seat, just let your usher know.• ALL people are ALWAYS welcome to receive Holy Communion.

6from the pastorSeptember UpdatesBY PASTOR JEN ROMEThe wild geese aren’t migrating yet. But the arrival of Fall always brings the poem, “Wild Geese,” by Mary Oliver to mind:“You do not have to be good. You do not have to walk on your knees for a hundred miles through the desert, repenting. You only have to let the soft animal of your body love what it loves. Tell me about despair, yours, and I will tell you mine.… Whoever you are, no matter how lonely, the world oers itself to your imagination, calls to you like the wild geese, harsh and exciting– over and over announcing your place/in the family of things.”God created our place in the family of things. We can be so stuck in our heads that we forget that God created our place in the family of things; the wild geese, like the Holy Spirit, announcing this to us. Setting aside for a moment, all the very human things. The foundation of our Lutheran Christian tradition is that God’s love and grace come to all of us, independent of having to be good. That Lutheran Christian tradition tells us that walking a hundred miles through the desert on our knees, repenting doesn’t make us worthy of God’s love. God’s love in Jesus is simply ours because God gives us God’s love.So dear ones, let the soft animal of our bodies love what they love. Dear ones, tell me about your despair, and I will tell you mine. And even in the midst of love and despair, we have a place in God’s family, in the family of things. We are not alone. We are surrounded with our human dear ones and our animal ones and all creation. We are more connected to them than we might think on any given day sending emails or doing homework or planning our days. God is calling to you to rest in your creatureliness. That God made you and all creation and called it all good. All God’s love and peace to you as we turn to Fall.

This group sings for a variety of evening worship services and is open to anyone in the community.Have you ever wanted to have the experience of being in a music group but maybe didn’t want to sing or didn’t feel skilled enough on an instrument? Playing chimes is a great way to enjoy making music with others without needing a lot of previous training. Pilgrim now owns our own set of hand chimes. You only have to be able to follow two notes of music throughout the course of a piece, so many adults and youth around 5th grade and older can quickly learn to ring in a group, even without much music reading experience. We will rehearse Sunday September 15 from 10:50-11:30 am, and will ring for worship next on September 29.Please be in touch with Paul at SteverPaul55@aol.com for more information about these ensembles.Pilgrim’s Children’s Choirs, open to all children and youth approximately 4 years and older, resumes Wednesday rehearsals on September 11 and are directed by Anna Stolte-Huchim, who writes:Hello Pilgrim Families! 9from the vestryBY KATE TOSTESON, VESTRY PRESIDENTIf you’ve walked around church lately, you may have noticed some new carpet in the entryway and main oce. We’re also moving forward with resurfacing the back parking lot to make it safer for our sta and fellow Pilgrims who use it. These projects were funded with a portion of the estate gift Pilgrim received in 2020 from Dick and Julie Johnson. The Vestry would like to express our gratitude and thanks for the memory of Dick and Julie Johnson. We’d also like to let you know how projects like these come about and give a little behind-the-scenes look at how the Vestry works these days.In this case, the process started with our Properties committee. This dedicated group of people did the good work of determining the top priorities for maintaining our building and grounds and putting together motions for the Vestry to consider. Properties knew they wanted to get these projects started in July, so they made sure to send the motion to the Vestry before the rst Tuesday in June. Why send the motion then? Because the rst Tuesday of the month is when the Vestry Executive Team meets to plan out the agenda for the full Vestry meeting that takes place on the third Tuesday of the month. How does the Executive Team decide what goes on the agenda? These days, we mostly work o of a spreadsheet that we call the Issues List. Whenever we receive a motion, a suggestion, a concern, an idea, etc. that doesn’t require an immediate response, we add it to this list along with other pertinent information (e.g. related documents, date needed by, etc.). At the Executive Team meeting on that rst Tuesday of the month, we go through the lists’s current items to determine what needs to be brought to the full Vestry that month, whether for the purpose of an ocial vote, information sharing, fuller discussion, or some combination thereof. When the third Tuesday of the month rolls around, the full Vestry meets to connect with one another, ground ourselves through a devotion led by Pastor Jen, reect on Pilgrim’s shared values, and tend to the business at hand. At the end of the meeting, we review any to-dos that came out of our time together, wrap up with prayer, and get ready to follow a similar process next month. It’s work we’re very grateful to do.

10givingLuganga ScholarshipsBY PAM ITZIN, ON BEHALF OF THE LUGANGA TEAMFellow Pilgrims, the Luganga Team is once again reaching out to you for support of our partner Luganga Lutheran Church in Tanzania. One of the ways Pilgrims care for our sister congregation is through our annual support of the Bega Kwa Bega program to provide scholarships for school children. Individual scholarships range from $400-$650 per school year, depending on the level of the student. In 2024, Pilgrim is supporting scholarships for eleven children. Over the past twenty years, Pilgrims have helped to educate a whole generation of Luganga’s children — thank you! Because Pilgrims have given so generously in the past two years, for this year we are able to expand the scope of our care for the children of Luganga, while continuing to fully support the scholarship needs of the congregation. All gifts received this fall will be divided equally between support for Luganga scholarships, and support for the Huruma Center.Huruma Center is an orphanage serving about 100 children of the Iringa Diocese, including Luganga. Pilgrim’s support for Huruma will be provided through Friends of Huruma (friendsofhuruma.org), an aliate of Beka Kwa Bega. Pastor Chris Smith, who recently served Pilgrim in interim ministry, is the Coordinator of Friends of Huruma. We will be fundraising through the months of September into mid-October. Thank you for your prayerful consideration of support of our partners in Christ. To make a donation, visit pilgrimstpaul.org/donate choose the Luganga Tanzania Scholarships option.

11education, service, & fellowshipWe Can’t Do Faith Alone: New Member ExperienceSunday, September 29, 10:45 am – 12:00 pm at Pilgrim in the Fireside RoomI remember when someone from Pilgrim shared a few words at her son’s baptism before the COVID pandemic. She shared that her son being baptized was important to her because we can’t support our children in their faith on our own. We need a community. She is right. We can’t do this alone. We don’t want to do this alone. Not just when raising children, but for each of us at every age. I’m not sure I believe in people being “members” of a church. An ocial status alone does not grant us faith community. Faith community comes from those who choose to be there for each other in worship and care for each other and others. Our connection to God grows and deepens as we are intentionally rooted in a faith community. On Sunday, September 29, 10:45 am – 12:00 pm we’ll oer an experience for people who wish to intentionally become rooted in the Pilgrim community to share their stories and connect with the life of Pilgrim. Those who would like to or would like to explore this intentional connection (new membership) are invited. If you have any questions or plan on attending, please contact Pastor Jen.Lively Lunch Bunch Returns! The Lively Lunch Bunch lunches are back — please consider joining us! We will have speakers, games, and sometimes just visiting after the meal! Emails will come a couple weeks in advance of the dates, and reservations are necessary so we know how much food to get. Please keep in mind that when you make a reservation, we will be ordering food for you, and your payment is counted upon and appreciated. Reservations can be sent to Ann Dyellig (ann.dyellig@gmail.com or 612-720-4403). Lunches will be held from 11:30am to 1:30pm on the second Tuesday of each month in the Fellowship Hall at Pilgrim, unless noted in the monthly invitation. Feel free to come a bit early to visit with your friends, and meet new ones! Here are the monthly dates for your personal calendars: September 10, October 8, November 12, December 10, January 14, February 11, March 11, April 8, May 13.The rst lunch on September 10 will be salads, Bbead, and apple pie! 14CHILDREN, YOUTH, & FAMILIES (CONT.)Have a Family Update? We’d love to hear about it! Please send changes to names, pronouns, and household members to newsletter@pilgrimstpaul.org.Conrmation CapstoneConrmation is a time to pay special attention to your life of doubt and faith. You learn, serve others, meet people, and have fun — so that you can continue growing spiritually. Your spiritual life is an important part of who you are and continues to unfold, twist, and turn throughout your life. Your church wants to make sure it supports you during this particular time in your life when you are wondering and exploring deeply about your identity, values, communities, and beliefs in your life. You are invited to participate in 9th – 10th grade Conrmation Capstone. There a consideration and orientation meeting for youth and parents/caregivers on Sunday, September 15 at 11:30 am at Pilgrim with Pastor Jen so you can ask all your questions and learn what this is all about—there is no need to commit at that time, just consider. For more information, please contact Pastor Jen.
