worship4A Note from Pastor JenAs much as we can this month and next, let’s come to be together in person on Sundays. We need each other. And we need to keep becoming each other’s people, so we can rest in and rely on each other. This is how we will have the resilience to care for each other and our neighbors in days to come.January Worship Overview The basic pattern for Sunday mornings: • 9:30 am Worship with live streaming• 10:45 am Special Events like Coee Time, Learning Forums, Connecting ConversationsWorship each Sunday morning includes “Point for Pilgrims” — an opportunity for children and their families to experience the Bible story in an engaging way. Livestreaming UpdateFor the foreseeable future, the worship livestream will be broadcast to YouTube only. This allows us to have a secure livestream that is not visible to the general public, and helps us keep our community safe while we continue to address safety concerns. If you receive the weekly emails from Pilgrim on Saturdays, you are on the mailing list for the livestream link. Look for an email from Pilgrim shortly before worship each Sunday with the link to join the livestream.January Worship Schedule Sunday, January 5 — Epiphany Sunday9:30 am Pastor Jen Rome preaching. Communicants come forward to receive the elements. Those serving Communion will cleanse their hands immediately before serving. Communicants will rst receive the bread, then dip it into the red wine or the white grape juice, and then eat it. • Gluten free wafers and individual sealed, pre-packaged communion kits are also available. If you need communion brought to you in your seat, just let your usher know.• ALL people are ALWAYS welcome to receive Holy Communion.

6from the pastorJanuary UpdatesBY PASTOR JEN ROMEIn January and February 2025, Pilgrim will experience a residency led by Conie Borchardt, Executive Director of Music That Makes Community. Music that Makes Community “practices communal song-sharing that inspires deep spiritual connection, brave shared leadership, and sparks the possibility of transformation in our world. We oer resources, training, and encouragement to individuals, organizations, and communities in the dynamic power of singing to connect others and ourselves.”Conie will work with the choirs, lead in worship, play piano and organ, and engage all of us in singing in a new way. Conie will lead us in singing, have regular check in times after worship for people to reect on their experience of using their voices, train people of Pilgrim and others from the community as song leaders at a retreat. This opportunity to remind ourselves of the power of music and help us reclaim our voices and song. This might seem a little slow or counterproductive on the surface. But This time will also serve to give us a time to reect on the similar and dierent ways we are being called forward in our life together in music as people of Pilgrim. The process will aid us in discerning what we love, need, and imagine as we begin the search for new musician/s to lead among us on sta.As we experienced in our Advent Candle Lighting song, “Honor the Dark” by Lea Morris, “We choose to honor the dark, uncertainty and change. Deliver us from fear until only love remains.” God does deliver us from fear even in the midst of uncertainty. God calls in-between times not simply to x things or plug gaps, but to embody the curious, grounded, open love of a creating and creative God among us creating and creative people.Pastor Jen

In addition to 30+ years of church music experience in Lutheran, Episcopal, and UCC congregations, Conie listens and moves at the conuences of the past, present, and not yet; Asian-European ancestry; and the Misi-ziibi and Mni’sota Rivers with training in music, Dances of Universal Peace, and spiritual direction as a freelance Public Heart Artist and Cultural Catalyst. Recent transdisciplinary projects include Freeing Refrains and Biracial and Rural which explore the role of storytelling and community in healing.”A Time of TransitionAnna Stolte-Huchim, Pilgrim’s Children’s Choir Director, will be taking a new step in her career and will be leaving her role with us at Pilgrim. We are happy for her in her life and sad for us as we will miss her! We will have a special blessing of Thanksgiving and Godspeed for Anna during 9:30 am worship on Sunday, January 12. Here is what Anna wrote to share with you:I am sad to say that my time as director of children’s music will be coming to an end soon. I have loved my time at Pilgrim but recently received a full time job opportunity that would give me the opportunity to do the work I do with AmeriCorps VISTA full time on a national scale as VISTA Program Manager with the National Legal Aid Defense Association (NLADA) in Washington, D.C. While I will be based in Minnesota, this position will require frequent travel that will make me unable to continue as director of children’s music. My last day at Pilgrim will be Sunday, January 12th and my last day of choir will be Wednesday, January 8th. As always, please reach out with any questions or concerns at any point. I am committed to making this as smooth of a transition as possible for the whole community and hope to come back and sub for children’s choirs when needed and able. I have learned so much from the Pilgrim community and feel immensely grateful to have been given the opportunity to serve the community for the past two years as director of children’s music. With a grateful heart, Anna (she/they)The role of leading children in music for the future will be folded into the process of search for new musician/s to lead with us at Pilgrim. Pastor Jen invites people of all ages to join her to get creative about sharing music of all kinds from January-April.Meet downstairs in the Fellowship Hall on Wednesday, January 15, 5:30-6:20 pm to share ideas, pitch in, and make some beautiful musical plans. Jack Kahnert will be available as an accompanist and some Pilgrim musicians will also be there to help with choosing music that works for you.

9MUSIC NOTES (CONT.)Interim Music PlanA committee will be formed in January 2025 to determine the job description for Pilgrim’s new music director and proceed with interviews and hiring, which will occur later in the spring. The target start date will be the beginning of summer 2025. Please keep Pilgrim’s music ministers in your prayers as we navigate this transition together, and rest assured that our core values of creativity, worshiping and singing together will be present throughout this process. We will continue to make joyful, meaningful music together in this in-between time! Let us sing to God! The Pilgrim Vestry

10education, service, & fellowshipWinterPlayAs our community continues to grow in caring for one another, we’ve been blessed with another opportunity to care for people in our immediate neighborhood. This January through March, Pilgrim will be one of multiple faith communities hosting WinterPlay, a pilot program from Pilgrim’s mission partner, Interfaith Action of Greater Saint Paul. The goal of this program is to give families (especially those living in low-income and aordable housing) a larger space where their young children can play when the winter weather makes it hard to comfortably or safely play outside.Participating in this program is an easy lift for our community: We’re within one mile of neighbors who live in low-income or aordable housing; we have a perfect play space in our downstairs Fellowship Hall; and — most importantly — we are a community that truly cares about kids and families, and this program allows us to live into that value and ll a real need for people in our neighborhood. We’ll be lling that need by hosting play sessions from 10:30 am-12:00 pm on Wednesdays and Thursdays. WinterPlay sessions will start on January 8 and run through March 27. During these times, kids ages 5 and under will come with a caregiver and enjoy some gross motor play down in the Fellowship Hall. At least one Pilgrim host will be present at each session to make sure the space is open and ready, greet people as they come in, and maintain a safe environment for the kids and their caregivers to engage with the space. We would love to have a deep bench of volunteer hosts signed up for these times. If this is something you’d like to help with, please contact Annie Pezalla (annie.pezalla@gmail.com) or Kate Tosteson (kate.tosteson@gmail.com).More Than Happy Hour Tuesday, January 28, 6:30 pm at the home of Leif McLellan Boehm in Saint Louis ParkMore Than Happy Hour is a once-a-month space for young adults to gather and talk about life, church, and the world.
