Dear Rabbi Sko and the Congregation of Park Synagogue ~
On the happy occasion of the 150th anniversary of the Park
Synagogue, and as the granddaughter of the architect, Eric
Mendelsohn, I would like to extend my heartiest Mazel Tov to
all of you!
It has been many years since I visited Park Synagogue,
but I remember clearly being profoundly aected by its
astoundingly beautiful design. Your Rabbi at the time,
Armond Cohen, gave my mother, Esther, and me a grand
tour and we were both very honored by his kind attention. I
feel you are most fortunate to be able to immerse yourselves
in the modern yet classic appointment of such a lovely space.
I know my grandfather, Eric, and my grandmother, Louise,
would be overjoyed to celebrate with you. So, on behalf
of their family - their two great-grandchildren, their great-
great-grandaughter and myself - and as you begin your new
journey towards Park Synagogue's 200th anniversary, I wish
all of you health, happiness and wellbeing!

As the school year draws to a close, I would like to thank
those special people in the lives of our children who help us
discover and imagine possibilities of who we can become,
those who believe in each of us every day and who even
help us understand that mistakes are just part of getting
something right. Where would we be without our teachers,
parents, clergy and educators who inspire and encourage us?
They open our minds and touch our hearts.
Near the end of the year, we asked our students to do
‘moving-up interviews. The teachers documented their
thoughts. (Some students even asked for year round Sunday
School!) I have chosen to share the thoughts of our sixth
grade Sunday/Religious School students, students who
many think focus solely on the Bar/Bat Mitzvah ceremony.
These sixth graders shared how meaningful this year has
been to them from their Hebrew and Tolerance curriculum.
From their mouths to your hearts:
• I learned that everyone is human
• Accept others and do not discriminate
• Be yourself, no matter what others may think
• I learned Trope, the notes of the Torah
• I mastered the Musaf service
• I learned that appearance is nada
The right thing is hard
Treat people the way you want to be treated
• People are dierent and that is good
Take care of each other, everyone is equal and deserves
dignity
I hope that each of us continues to nd joy in learning and
performing deeds of righteousness. Enjoy the summer!

Nurturing children and families
through Jewish values...one day at a time
Park
Preschool
Corner
Shavuot , the holiday when we celebrate our receiving our
Torah laws and commandments, is fast approaching. Most
organizations and institutions have their own “ laws” and/
or mission statements. It is our mission statement at Park
Preschool and Park Synagogue, to combine the process
of educating and nurturing our students, with engaging
families in life-long learning, rooted in Jewish values.
These values are reected in our curriculum, and manifested
in the relationships we cultivate within our walls.
Children and their families are able see to the way our
teachers model respect among the sta, as we interact
and cooperate with each other.
Children and their families recognize and respect the
inherent value of all people, as we are all created in God’s
image. This is reected in the diverse nature of our
student makeup, and our history of inclusion.
Children and their families get involved in the community
through school projects that help others in need in our
city.
Children and their families appreciate intergenerational
activities, as they take part in a variety of school programs
that include parents, grandparents, and other family
members.
Children and families feel part of the Park community, due
to the participation of clergy an other sta members in our
Preschool programs.
The relationships we build, and the feeling of connection
that we promote, is yet another way in which we are
building a reputation that brands us as a distinguished and
outstanding Preschool in our community. We wish all our
Park families much growth and happiness, and a joyous
Shavuot holiday.
Yours for Children,
Anne Sportas

The Women's Jewish Heritage Trip to New York City
May 9-12, 2019
University Day
It was back to college” without the exams for 125 people
of all ages who attended the 26th annual University Day
on May 2 at Park Synagogue East. The day began with
Rabbi Sko speaking about Yom Hashoah, followed
by an educational and entertaining lecture by Dr. Roy
Buchinsky, Director of Wellness at University Hospitals
June 2019
and a Park member. Participants
then attended morning and
afternoon workshops on a
wide variety of subjects, from
The Invasion of Plastics to
The Challenge of Combatting
Anti-Semitism & BDS on College
Campuses. Everyone enjoyed a
delicious box lunch at noon and a musical interlude that
closed the day with a performance by the Cleveland
Heights High School Barbershoppers, made up of very
talented young men and women. The Park Senior Adult
group, co-chaired by Ruth Friedman and Dorie Sopher,
sponsored this special day of learning.
A wonderful group of 29 women recently enjoyed a whirlwind trip over 3 ½ days to New York City, sponsored by Park’s
Womens Rosh Chodesh Group. They visited the Tenement Museum, Eldridge Street Synagogue, Ellis Island, the Museum
of Jewish Heritage’s new Auschwitz exhibit, the Jewish Museum, the 9/11 Museum, attended services at B’nai Jeshurun
and Park Avenue Synagogue, had delicious kosher meals, and saw “Fiddler on the Roof in Yiddish and The Prom.

Park's Berlin Trip attendees have the amazing opportunity
to walk through history. The trip was fully booked after only
two weeks of being advertised! Rabbi Sko and the group
have been preparing for this once-in-a-lifetime experience.
This group will visit parts of historical Berlin in pre-war Jewish
neighborhoods, Nazi sights of historical interest and walk into
the modern revival of the Jewish world in Berlin.
