Family Education and Wolf Religious School
School’s Out for Summer:
That means Important Work
is Happening Now!
Family adventures, camp, BBQs are all part of having fun in the
summer. Here at Park in the Education Department, we are
very busy in June and July. As one of my colleagues once said:
There are Two elements that characterize a successful school
year – the opening and closing.
The opening of school is when the kids are most excited
and teachers are the freshest. Opening day sets the climate
and expectations for the rest of the year. Here is a link to
the PSWRS and Sunday school registration and reenrollment
packet https://www.parksynagogue.org/wolf-religious-school.
Please note a helpful change this year. No longer do you
need to ll out a registration & payment page for each child.
We hope that you will take time to send in registration sooner
rather than later as it helps in our planning process.
So why is the closing so important that we concern ourselves
with reviewing the past year in great detail? The Park
Synagogue Education professional sta and I review the past
year’s data as we make decisions about:
• Goals for the new year
• Creating enhanced Educational Experiences and Programs
• Meeting our students’ evolving individual needs
• Faculty Professional Development
These huge and important tasks need to be done not just
well but at the right time so that our school is ready to begin
and operate at full steam on the rst day. This means lots
of summer hours of planning. Park Synagogue is fortunate
to have two dedicated professionals that work all year
long, including in the summer to ensure that our Jewish
educational program is top notch. These unsung Park
professionals are Amy Greenspan and Liz Gregory. They
are here during the week and weekends, many evenings
past the traditional ‘5:00 pm end of the work day, writing
award winning curricula and ensuring that details for
exceptional programs are set. Next time you see them, give
them a thank you or a high ve to let them know how much
we appreciate their meaningful dedication to the Jewish
education of our children.
Summer is an exciting time for us as reimagine Jewish
educational experiences for you. The school year is the
rewarding time as we watch our plans come to fruition. We
wish you a wonderful summer and cannot wait to see you

Nurturing children and families
through Jewish values...one day at a time
Park
Preschool
Corner
Reecting on this school year, I am proud to share that
it was one lled with wonderful growth and learning for
our children. Our outstanding professional sta once
again devoted themselves to engaging their students in
meaningful, hands on experiences.
We had a year in which many families joined our Preschool
family and also our extended Park family by attending
various synagogue events and becoming members. We are
so proud of our Preschool with its excellent program, and
renown reputation in the community.
As I look forward to next Fall, I am excited to continue our
work alongside Marilyn Zaas, to ensure the continuity of
our Preschool. We remain committed to conveying Jewish
values, and the best educational practices in our warm and
nurturing environment.
Thank you to all of our sta, volunteers, clergy, Park Board,
Park sta, Preschool families and our precious students for
making us what we are!
Yours for Children,
Anne Sportas
As I look forward to summer camp and the 2019/20 school
year I have mixed feelings. I will miss spending the day in
my classroom with students after teaching 10 years of 3 year
olds here at Park Synagogue.
However, I look forward to the new challenges ahead of me
as the Director of the Park Preschool. I am especially happy
to serve in this role of supporting our students, teachers and
parents throughout our journey as educators and learners
all together. We have an amazing, nurturing preschool with
kind, loving, and creative teachers. I’m so proud to be a part
of this group.
We have worked hard together to earn 4 stars with the Step
Up to Quality program. This was accomplished without
losing site of the importance of play, Tikkun Olam (taking
care of our world), and the sense of Kehillah (community)
I’m anxious to greet my old friends and meet our new
families as well. Stay tuned for updates on preschool
happenings throughout the year.

SAVE THE DATE FOR SISTERHOOD'S
Opening
Luncheon
September 10, 2019
These reviewed books were shared with Park's Sisterhood
last month. Each book is available in our library.
And After the Fire by Lauren Belfer is a powerful and
passionate historical novel inspired by actual events about
two women, one European and one American, and the
mysterious choral masterpiece written by Johann Sebastian
Bach that changes both of their lives. Interweaving the
stories of Susanna and Sara, this book traverses over 200
years of history, seamlessly melding past and present, real
and imagined.
Leaving Lucy Pear by Anna Solomon begins in 1917 in
Cape Ann, Mass., where a wealthy young Jewish woman
named Beatrice Haven is planning to attend college
but nds herself pregnant! She is sent to her Uncle Iras
estate to deliver the baby, give it up for adoption, and
carry on with her life. HOWEVER…Bea decides instead to
secretly place the baby girl in a nearby orchard. Just as she
hopes, Emma Murphy nds the baby and claims her as her
own. Interlocking stories of love and indelity, trust and
suspicion, nurturing and abandonement, will keep your
attention as the two women vie for Lucys love.
The plot of the next book is so controversial that it became
the center of a political scandal in Israel when the Ministry
of Education banned it from high school curriculums.
All the Rivers by Dorit Rabinyan is my favorite book of the
year. Beautifully translated from the Hebrew by Jessica
Cohen, it is the story of aforbidden love between Liat, an
young Israeli translator and Hilmi, a Palestinian Arab artist.
The two are both living temporarily in post 9/11 New York
and meet in Greenwich Village. Quickly they fall in love,
though they know they should not. When they do return
home, to Tel Aviv and Ramallah, the lovers must decide
whether to keep their relationship going or try to let it go.
House of Gold by Natasha Solomons follows outgoing
and unconventional heiress Greta Goldbaum, twenty-
one and about to leave her beloved Vienna to marry her
British cousin Albert in order to keep the extended familys
dynasty intact. This sweeping and heartbreaking story of
love, war, and duty, follows a family, loosely based on the
famous Rothschilds, as they try desperately to hold onto
their banking empire.

2004 S. Green Road, South Euclid
Help pack bags of fresh produce
and other non-perishable food for
people in need in our community.
Six to eight volunteers (age 12 and
older) are needed each month.
Great project for middle school
and high school aged kids and
their parents. Students can earn
volunteer credits!
Pet Visits
Sundays — July 14, August 11 and September 8
3:00 - 4:00 pm Eliza Bryant Village
7201 Wade Park Avenue, Cleveland
Take your docile dog or
cat to brighten the day
of the residents of Eliza
Bryant Village. This is a
great family project!
All are welcome!
Hebrew Cultural Garden was
dedicated in 1926 as a monument
to Jews who have made a dierence
over hundreds of years. To many
Clevelanders the garden is the only
tangible contact they may have with
the Cleveland Jewish community, so
it is imperative that we maintain it in
a condition that we can be proud of.
Volunteers ages 8 and over are welcome to help.
Please RSVP to Ellen Petler at epetler@parksyn.org or
(216) 371-2244, ext. 122. Let Ellen know if you would like to
carpool to the Hebrew Cultural Garden.
Sponsored by Park’s Social Action Committee and the Cleveland
Jewish Federations Volunteer Network.
Park Synagogues 150th Annual
Meeting was a special time to honor our
past and celebrate the future as we move
forward into our 151st year! It featured a
delicious brunch catered by Café 56, board
nominations, a message from our president,
Dr. Mark I. Froimson, volunteer recognition,
student awards, and the presentation of the
Centerites of the Year Award (Park’s highest
honor) to Rabbi Joshua & Ilana Hoer Sko.
We wish a hearty mazel tov to all of our award
winners!
Rabbi Joshua & Ilana Hoer Sko are
joined by their children, Eden and
Jared Sko after being presented
with the Centerites of the Year Award.
Along with Ken Fixler, Ilene Rhodes
recieved the "Teacher of Valor" Award.
Ilene Rhodes is pictured here with her
beautiful family at Park's 150th Annual
Meeting.
