THE JOURNEY2Je Thorne became CEO of Our Lady of Peace on Dec. 30, 2022, a role that has fully engaged him and utilized a wealth of his professional experience. “He’s transitioned well into the position,” said Board Chair Greg Cash. “He’s dynamic, he’s a good communicator, he’s a quick study. A new leader drinks from the rehose. He hasn’t drowned as he’s been drinking from it.” Je and his wife of 32 years, Mary Jo, are both from New Brighton and now live in Maplewood, where they raised their two daughters. They belong to St. Ambrose Catholic Community in Woodbury. We asked Je to share about his background and to look back on his rst year at the helm. “It’s my honor to be here, to embrace the legacy that the Sisters gave us,” he said. “I’m thrilled to be part of it.” What attracted you to this job? My predecessor, Joe Stanislav, invited me to come for a tour. I remember walking out, and I called my wife right away and said, “Wow! This surprised me.”I’ve heard this from other people too: You just feel something when you come here. There’s a spirit about it. It’s a sacred space. We owe it all to the Sisters. They created a culture that you can’t just make overnight. Our history, founded by the Dominican Sisters starting Our Lady of Good Counsel or “the free cancer home” 82 years ago – that history is alive and well. You can’t write a better story than we have. I’ve intentionally spent my career working for non-prot healthcare organizations, most of them faith-based, including a couple Catholic organizations, which have always been a closer t for me. That background, along with my personal experience with hospice and my respect for the Sisters’ legacy, drew me here. It sounds like a perfect t for you, even though you weren’t looking for a dierent job.It feels that way, for sure. I feel lucky to be here. What makes a good leader? It’s someone who will listen. I’ve done a lot of listening – talking to leadership and with our employees, one-on-one and in small groups; meeting one-on-one with Board members; talking with our donors and stakeholders. You listen, assess and develop strategies, making sure you understand the mission and values of an organization like ours, especially one that’s non-prot and faith-based. Those values are much deeper than something hanging on a wall. We need to be good stewards of the organization, and for us that has a much deeper meaning. We are stewards of what the Dominican and Franciscan Sisters started. What impresses you about Our Lady? Being in non-prot healthcare, I’ve had the pleasure of working with a lot of great people. OLP is another level. The sta that we have here – it is nurses, it is aides – who have been with us 20 and 30 years. It’s a calling. The support of our donors is also amazing. Our Lady of Peace3Greg Cash brings an insatiable curiosity to his role as chair of Our Lady’s board of directors. A voracious reader, he loves history, language and service. Now in his 60s, the Minnetonka father of two makes a point to give back as much as possible, serving on a number of boards and volunteering whenever he can. You learned French at age 10, German at 18, Italian in your 40s and now, in your 60s, you’re learning Japanese. What’s it like having so many sets of language in your brain? I can have trilingual conversations, switching back and forth. In college I had French class at 8:30 and then German class at 9:20, so I learned how to ip that switch. There’ll be times when I’m trying to think of a word, and in my mind, the English word isn’t always the best to describe something. Schadenfreude is a very ecient word because you’ve got joy and sadness together, and you can’t say that in English, so we borrowed that word. How do you remain a lifelong learner? I’m very interested in history and current events, so I keep up to speed. One of the rst things I do in the morning is I listen to the BBC World Service news, Reuters and NPR. I also read The Wall Street Journal every day. I’m very interested in other cultures, so I’ll go to cultural programs. I really don’t watch much television aside from sports. I read all the newspapers digitally but I prefer to have a book in hand. My mother was a reading teacher, so books played an important role in our lives.You grew up on a cattle farm in northern Illinois. How has that upbringing stayed with you? If you grow up on a farm, you learn how to work. I always joke that, no matter what my job is, it’s better than my rst job: shoveling manure. We baled hay. We had some pretty hot and sweaty work like walking the beans to look for corn, cutting and removing it. I’ve always had a strong work ethic, and it’s not necessarily a work ethic that goes from Monday to Friday. In farming you become pretty self-sucient. And I developed a love for the outdoors that continues to this day. My brother, my son and I go on a backpacking and camping trip every year. Last year we did the Grand Portage – it’s a nine and a half mile hike each way, and we hiked up to the Pigeon River while hiking the Grand Portage and camped overnight. It’s pretty advanced – there are a lot of trees down on the trail and you have to nd your way under or over them. We were carrying 40 to 50-pound packs. We walked down looking like three old men.One of my ancestors was a French fur trader and one of the rst documented non-Native Americans in Minnesota. He came in 1659 with his brother-in-law – they were the rst Europeans to come to what’s now Minnesota. Do you have a French fur trader in you? 100 percent! I’ve lived all over the world. I have wanderlust, and I think it’s in the genes. I think I got it from him. There’s been a lot written about him. He was a Coureur de Bois, which translates to Runner of the Woods.And you try to be a runner of the woods! I do! I’ve been on many canoe trips on the Mississippi, both Upper and Lower. My mom would always talk about the fact that we’re descended from him, but I got more interested in it as I became an adult. There’s been a lot written about him. Is it satisfying to complete a grueling portage like the Grand Portage up in the northeast corner of Minnesota? It’s very gratifying on multiple levels. It’s retracing the steps of ancestors. It’s the physical aspect of it – it’s good to know I can still do it. It’s the exposure to nature. Cooking on an open re, sleeping in a tent. We go in September, and sometimes the temps dip just above freezing. What’s your vision for Our Lady of Peace? A longer-term goal I have is to create an endowment so we can start nancing out of endowed funds, as opposed to starting at zero every year and having to raise $3.5 million to oset the annual operating decit. We’d like to be less dependent on how much we raise year to year. I think Our Lady is a very, very special place, and it would be my goal to make more people aware of it so they can experience it. Our Lady of Peace7Andy and Jerilyn met on a blind date in college. The pretty blonde from Winona, a commercial art major, instantly felt at ease around the business major from Lakeville. They were both attending the University of Minnesota-Duluth. Their date began at Perkin’s Restaurant and then continued at the Aerial Lift Bridge on Lake Superior.The hours ew by. Conversation just owed.“We hit it o so easily, and I loved his great sense of humor and how he made me laugh,” Jerilyn recalled.They watched the ships passing by – a metaphor for the journey they were about to embark on.They would marry at 21 and enjoy nearly 30 years of marriage. Andy’s companionship was the cornerstone of Jerilyn’s life. He planned amazing trips for the couple across the country. And they relished every chance to return to Duluth, their favorite place that held so many great memories for them.Back home in Lakeville, they enjoyed dining out and spending time with family. Year after year, they made cherished memories.The diagnosis of terminal brain cancer that Andy received came as a complete shock. He battled it for nearly two years, demonstrating grace and courage.“He loved making me laugh, right up until the very end,” Jerilyn said.Andy spent his nal weeks at Our Lady of Peace Hospice, where he was treated with the utmost of care. He died on March 3, 2018 at age 51. Returning to the starting placeJerilyn hasn’t been back to Duluth since Andy’s death ve years ago, although she intends to scatter his ashes there some day.“I’ve been wanting to get up there, but it’s still hard for me to think about,” said Jerilyn, who lives in Lakeville and works as project support. “I’m trying to gure out how I’ll do it – whether I’ll bring a friend or go alone. I feel like maybe the rst time I just need to go back there by myself.”One thing she is certain of: the care Andy received at Our Lady of Peace was rst-rate, a measure of comfort amid the grief.“I had turned into his full-time caregiver when he lost his mobility, which led to some frustrating moments for both of us,” she said. “When we got to Our Lady of Peace, it was so nice to let them handle all of the things I wasn’t trained to do and just be his wife and spend my time with him.”The sta tended to Andy’s every need and took such good care of him. Having reluctantly given up showers some time ago, he especially enjoyed his time in the whirlpool bath.Our Lady embraced his entire family. Someone learned it was his mom’s birthday and surprised the family by bringing a small cake in. Everyone gathered around Andy’s bed and sang happy birthday to her.“I’m so glad he was able to have that last celebration with her,” Jerilyn said. THE JOURNEY8Mike Neeson was the picture of health when, at 45, the Stillwater dad got the shocking diagnosis: stage IV colon cancer. “Don’t go on the internet,” his surgeon told him. “Everyone is dierent in how they respond.” Somehow, Mike and his wife, Patty, resisted the urge. “That was good advice,” Patty said, looking back. “I really didn’t start snooping around.” Mike agreed. “There’s too much stu,” he said. If they had searched online, the information would’ve been grim. The 5-year-survival rate, at that time, was in the single digits. “I’m glad we didn’t know it,” Patty said. Instead, the couple focused on devising a game plan. Mike began treatment quickly – chemo and radiation began a mere two weeks after the diagnosis. He knew he was in good hands, working with an acclaimed medical team at the University of Minnesota’s Masonic Cancer Center. They also broke the news to their boys, who were 11 and 9. Sitting at the dining room table, their minds reeled. It was hard to process their new reality. “Will we lose our house because Dad’s not working?” asked Ben, the younger son. “Can I catch cancer if I drink out of Dad’s glass?” asked Nick, the older boy. Mike halted his rewarding work at Andersen Windows to become a full-time cancer patient. It seemed natural. It would make a lasting dierence, she knew – far more meaningful than owers that would soon wilt.And including Our Lady of Peace in her will made perfect sense. It gives her a guarantee that she can support OLP, as a tribute to Andy, which is important to her. But it doesn’t require that she determine the amount or give right now, as she continues to adjust to having only one income.“I had always felt a sense of guilt, now that I’m a one-income family,” she said. “I don’t have the ability to make the size of donations that I would like to at this point. I realized: ‘Well, why not include Our Lady as a beneciary and build it right into my will so that they receive a portion of my estate.’ They are also listed as the sole beneciaries of a couple of retirement plans, in the case that they are not entirely spent.”That arrangement felt just right, she said, striking the perfect balance and bringing her peace of mind. “It makes it easier,” she said. “It takes the worry out of making sure the money goes where it will help others who nd themselves in the situation that I had been in.”Jerilyn set up the legacy gift in her will a month after Andy’s death. She’d been motivated to do so by a checklist she had read, citing things to do after losing a loved one – including getting your own will in order.“It’s in his honor,” she said. “It was very easy, and it feels right.” Patty and Mike Neeson

Our Lady of Peace9(Mike & Patty continued from page 7)In total, he would rack up 72 weeks of chemo and 40 radiation treatments and multiple surgeries, including a colostomy and a urostomy. If he was going to beat this, his body would have to radically change.“You might make it through cancer,” Mike explains, “but you have collateral damage.” Mike remained unfailingly positive. “He never once said, ‘Why me,’” said Patty, a realtor.Instead, Mike learned to deal with his new reality. He took each new day as a gift. A remarkable outcomeToday – 15 years later – tests now reveal that he is cancer free. His odds of getting cancer again are the same as anyone else’s. Still, Mike is diligent about monitoring his new body, which requires upkeep, including new stints for his ureters every 60 days. But to look at him – tanned, toned, golng three times a week – you would never know what he’s been through. His outlook is dierent though. He’s equally delighted if he gets a birdie or launches the ball in a pond. “There are no bad shots in golf,” Mike said. “I’m just happy to be playing.” When the garage-door breaks or the washing machine acts up, Mike and Patty now see them as hiccups, not dramas.“When you live in the present moment, it’s amazing what happens,” she said. “We enjoy every single day.” Giving backOne amazing bi-product of cancer has been the advocacy work Mike has embraced, addressing thousands of cancer patients at conferences and connecting one-on-one. “When I tell them about the cancer journey, I explain that it’s not linear. The peaks and valleys along the way are incredible. When you get a good scan or bloodwork, you might not want to spike the ball. On the other hand, I can’t tell you how many times I’d get a bad scan – ‘Oh, we see a hot node!’ – and then six weeks later it would be gone. You have to do your best without getting too euphoric or despondent.” He’s open about life after a colostomy. “Some patients say they would rather die than do that. I say, “Hey, you can still live life.’”The Neesons have teamed up with another couple to raise more than a million dollars for colon cancer research at the University of Minnesota. They’ve become good friends with his surgeons. They feel united with anyone battling cancer. And they are quick to tout the benets of hospice services, which Patty’s dad and Mike’s mom used. “When we hear a loved one is going into hospice, I say, ‘Oh, it’s so comforting to have that peace of mind,’” Patty said.“When you’re sick, you don’t want to sit there all day in a clinic. It’s so much more comfortable to get treatment at home,” Mike said. Patty understands how hospice care benets the whole family, not just the patient. “Not only is it wonderful for the patient, but it’s equally wonderful for the caregiver,” she said. “They’re going through a lot too. You know your loved one is in good hands. It’s so nice. There’s so much dignity in it.” Donating to Our Lady of Peace is a worthy cause, they tell others. “They need funds,” Patty said. “The state doesn’t fund OLP.” “If private funds don’t support it, who will?” Mike said. “And if we don’t support OLP, there will be people who literally have no options.” The Neesons added Our Lady of Peace to their will to ensure they can support it down the road. “We’re big proponents of estate planning,” Mike said. “You want to give back, but maybe your kids are still young and you’ve got college to pay for, you’ve got bills and a mortgage. If you always say, ‘Someday I’m going to do it’ – none of us know the hour. It could slip through the cracks. Estate planning gives you peace of mind – and it’s less your kids have to deal with.” Patty agreed. “It was a no-brainer!” she said. “If more people knew about it, they would do it!”

THE JOURNEY10Dr. Dennis Cross already had an impressive career as a board-certied internal medicine specialist. But serving at Our Lady of Peace enriched it in ways he never could’ve imagined when his wife convinced him to sit in on a few hospice meetings back in 2008.Dr. Cross, 73, and his wife, Nancy Larson, raised ve children who attended Hill-Murray School in Maplewood. Now the Woodbury couple are proud grandparents to three and preparing for a wedding for their youngest daughter.They are both medical professionals with a heart for service. Nancy, a registered nurse, serves as the Director of Community Hospice for Our Lady of Peace. Over the years, they enjoyed supporting each other in their respective careers and sharing insights. One day in April of 2008, Nancy posed a simple request: Could her husband participate in a meeting for their interdisciplinary group and be available for the sta since they didn’t have a medical director at the time? Dr. Cross was happy to oblige.The rst meeting turned into a second and a third, Dr. Cross was impressed by the Hospice and Home Health care team, which later merged with Our Lady of Good Counsel and was renamed Our Lady of Peace in 2011.Before long, he had been named the medical director.“It was serendipitous!” Dr. Cross said. “I had no idea it would last 15 years!”The gentle father soon discovered how meaningful he would nd palliative care, providing new channels to embrace his medical profession. At the hospice, it felt more like a ministry. “What made it so rewarding is the fact that I could provide comfort and encouragement,” he said, “and you also learned from the families and the loved ones who were dying. I learned how to oer comfort mainly by listening and not trying to solve anything because you can’t solve death.” With that came a clearer understanding of death. “Death is to life as birth is to life,” Dr. Cross said. “You learn to accept that.” Over time, he learned to shift his focus. “It taught me as a physician to focus on their desires rather than trying to contribute something signicant to their condition. I focused on: What is your goal? What is causing stress?” Instead of taking the lead, as many doctors do, he followed their lead. That made him a better physician. “It helped me to be more exible. It helped me see not what Dennis wants but what this patient wants to derive from this encounter.” He relinquished his agenda and grew in patience. “It’s a dierent approach,” Dr. Cross said. “Rather than getting right to the choices and the checklist, it was more to let the person come in and walk through their thoughts and needs. It helped me to acknowledge their fears, to listen to them. Our Lady of Peace11(CEO continued from page 2)I get the pleasure of making phone calls to some of our donors, and I hear about their loved ones’ experience here, about how that whirlpool bath – a tradition that came from the Dominican Sisters – meant so much to a new patient. It reminds me that what our sta does every day is so impactful. Are there days when it’s hard to turn o your brain when you drive home? Yeah. I’m always trying to consider the broader view. I enjoy that. I don’t want to be in a job that I get bored. I’d rather be overly busy. I’m a little better and more ecient when my plate is full with the work we are doing. What are your hobbies? I love to golf. My younger daughter has a minor in photography. She has a great eye. Sometimes she and I will go o and walk through the woods and snap pictures. We just went on a father-daughter trip to Washington DC for a week. She used her phone, and I’m a little more old-school. I used a camera. Does photography help you see the beauty of God’s handiwork?Absolutely! It forces me to slow down a little to appreciate the moment. I’m not always good at that. What are your goals for Our Lady? Now that I’m nine months into the position, we’ll be drilling deeper into the development of a strategic plan. But in more general terms, it’s continuing the legacy, it’s growing our services, talking more about our continuum of care and explain more of what that means. How are individuals moving throughout our continuum? We want to make that movement as seamless as possible and enhance services where it makes sense. Another goal is looking at ourselves and our community from a diversity standpoint. Every culture has dierent beliefs around the dying process, and we want to make sure that we’re culturally competent in understanding that. I think we have the tools to do that. Does being exposed to dying make you want to live dierently? It certainly gives you a dierent perspective. It can be a busy time, but it reminds me of how important it was to take that trip with my daughter, to establish those memories. It gives me a better understanding of how important the little things are in life. Have you lost loved ones? My wife’s mom passed away two months before we got married. Since then, both of my parents are gone and my wife’s father passed away. You learn a lot through grief. Everyone deals with it dierently. For us, you focus more on family. You hug your kids a little tighter. We’ve done quite a bit to keep the memories alive for our daughters. We do a lot with traditions, especially around the holidays. It could be something really simple, like my mother always made a certain kind of coee cake and now our daughter has started making it. She knows it’s Grammy’s Coee Cake. Another example is at our daughter’s wedding, my wife and I did a Polish blessing; the same blessing that was done by my parents at my wife and my wedding.A huge thing for my wife is her mom’s recipes – having those in her mom’s handwriting. It is a great opportunity for my daughters to know and love the Grandma they never met. THE JOURNEY12(Dr. Cross continued from page 10)Meanwhile, Dr. Cross’ respect for Our Lady of Peace continued to grow. “They have a vision of excellence that they try to live,” he said. “They have a purpose to accomplish: to help the person who is dying adapt. They are completely devoted to serving the dying person, and that accomplishment requires them to have a capacity to be human and to love. And that’s what I like about the organization: their commitment is to value the loved one. It’s not mechanical, it’s not industrialized; everything has to be unique to the patient.”That standard of care was rst set by the Dominican Sisters of Hawthorne and has continued to this day. “That didn’t come from the physicians. That came from the Sisters, the excellent nurses and the non-medical people. They’re the ones who help us scientists and physicians learn the ideals of hospice. The physicians there – we’re not in charge.” Dr. Cross deeply enjoyed his years at Our Lady of Peace, continuing on when Dr. Michael Pinchback became the full-time Medical Director in 2016. This past June, it was time for Dr. Cross to step down. He continues to work full-time for HealthPartners, but a piece of his heart remains at Our Lady, a place that molded his medical practice in profound ways. SUN-DAPPLED DELIGHT AT ANNUAL BUTTERFLY RELEASE Our annual August Buttery Memorial Event brought together friends and family to watch the release of hundreds of monarchs in our backyard garden. This simple memorial has a profound impact on observers and has become one of the most beloved events we host at Our Lady of Peace. THE JOURNEY14Dick Rylicki had always wanted to volunteer at Our Lady of Good Counsel, but working in sales, his travel schedule was too unpredictable to commit to a regular time slot. Six days after retiring, he was at Our Lady. He’s been volunteering there ever since – once a week, for 16 years now. If it’s Wednesday during the supper hour – from 4-6 pm – you can count on the 80-year-old Catholic to be there. He always walks – it’s a short distance from his home.He’d always been intrigued by the hospice. “Over the years,” Dick said, “you would see the nuns walking through the neighborhood or going to Mass at St. Mark’s,” which is his parish.Back in 1976, they admitted his mom with open arms, demonstrating tremendous hospitality. “That stirred something inside of me,” he said. Unfortunately, she died soon after, before moving in. But he never forgot their kindness. “There were such fond memories of the Dominican Sisters and the way they approached their hospitality. I can’t say enough. The Dominicans were almost motherly. There’s nothing they wouldn’t do for any of the residents.” Being able to help the Sisters – and learn from them – as a volunteer was meaningful, Dick said. “One of my rst duties – I’ll never forget – came from Sister Damian, who was the lead person on the second oor. She asked me to take a resident downstairs to the open courtyard in the middle so she could have a smoke. It was what this person wanted. And I loved it.”Dick still serves on the second oor, helping with the ow of mealtime however he can – cleaning the kitchen, prepping for supper, passing out water, delivering food and cleaning up afterwards. Simple exchanges continue to bring meaning to Dick, who is now a great grandpa. One afternoon he visited a resident and held up a glass of fresh water. She didn’t speak, but eyed the beverage with interest. When he oered it to her, she started guzzling it. “Boy, you were thirsty!” he remarked.Afterwards she locked eyes with him, seeking a heart-to-heart connection. “We held hands for about 20 seconds and just looked at each other’s eyes,” Dick said. “It was very touching. There are many stories like that. That’s what keeps me going.”He also believes that volunteering keeps him on his toes. “I believe in staying active,” Dick said. The commitment itself – right in the middle of the week – is a meaningful time marker, an anchor. “It’s the cornerstone of my week,” he said. “It’s kind of comforting. We make all our plans around Wednesdays between 4 and 6 p.m.”He keeps an open mind as to how any given Wednesday will go. “I don’t do anything extraordinary. If I can help a caregiver make it a little more enjoyable for one resident, I’ve done my job. Some days the exchanges with residents are more rewarding.” But the impact is always felt. “I can’t say enough,” he said. “I feel like I’ve accomplished something when I leave.”That’s why Dick wholeheartedly encourages others to volunteer at Our Lady. “I know a lot of people say: ‘I want to volunteer.’ Do it! I love teaching, but at the same time, I missed the direct practice, the connections with families and the lessons learned through those connections. I love spending time with patients and their families, reminiscing and hearing their stories. Even when those conversations are light-hearted and humorous, they are so meaningful to me.Having the opportunity to volunteer at Our Lady of Peace is an incredible privilege. It is an honor to be with people at the end of their life. So now, nine years later, with those memories in mind, I decided that Our Lady of Peace would be a great place to be grounded. I love working at Our Lady of Peace because of the patients and the sta. The amount of attention, care and love they put into making the patient’s end of life care the best it could be is astounding.”THERESA STEICHEN Theresa lives in Blaine, Minn. She is a realtor with Keller Williams Classic Realty and a direct support professional (DSP) with Dependable Home Health Care.“When my mom and dad were in hospice, the peace and comfort we received from the hospice workers will never be forgotten. I started volunteering, hoping I might be able to share this with others. I love the stories and the memories others have to share – the stories of growing up, raising children, careers, families, triumphs and challenges. Sometimes the best stories are told in the twinkle of an eye, a hand to hold or a hug. I feel blessed to have an opportunity to meet such lovely people.”

Before coming to the United States, I worked as a Registered Nurse in India (Kerala and Andhra Predesh).Soon after I nished my studies, I did my service in rural and urban communities. I took a leadership role as a nursing supervisor, working in private hospitals and government medical college hospitals.During that time, I worked in the following areas: urgent care, medical and surgical units, pediatric and gynecology units and ophthalmology.Once I retired from government service, I started to work with Our Lady of Peace Home in 2003. I have thoroughly enjoyed my work everywhere, working with rich and poor alike. I belong to the Franciscan Clarist Congregation, which was founded in Kerala, India. Our order follows the example of St. Francis and St. Clare of Assisi by striving to spread the Gospel message through a life of prayer, service and community living. I joined the congregation in 1965 and made it my profession in 1967. By the grace of God, I celebrated my Golden Jubilee in 2017 at Our Lady of Peace home. I am grateful to all the people who showed me love and concern.I belong to a strong Catholic family. I studied in the Sister’s School in India, and my cousins were also Sisters. Every day during interval, I used to go to the Sister’s Chapel for prayers. Then I decided to become a Sister – specically, a Missionary Sister. My grandfather did not want to send me away from Kerala! I decided to join the Clarist Congregation near our home. My youngest aunt also joined the same order at the same time. After becoming a Sister, my supervisor sent me to school for nursing where I got my RN. When I am not caring for my patients at Our Lady of Peace, I enjoy the creative process of making jewelry that I share with my family in India.I am the eldest of six children. All my siblings are married and their families are doing well. My father died in 2006, and my mother died this past year. After my father’s death, my mother was doing well, then grew weaker and was eventually bed-ridden for almost three years. My family cared for her during this time. My mother was always concerned about her children. Our Lady of Peace17I had to do my homework before attending the Taylor Swift concert with my daughters at U.S. Bank Stadium in June.My girls sent me a Spotify list to brush up on the singer’s many hits – and good thing, as Ms. Swift performed 44 of them over the course of a dazzling three-and-a-half-hour show. It was incredible.The best part? Attending the concert was a three-generation aair! My daughter Molly is pregnant. Knowing this marked Baby’s rst concert made the night even sweeter, and the idea that someday I could tell this little one about going to the Taylor Swift concert with Grandma made me smile.This special night left me reecting on how we make memories, what we choose to remember, and perhaps, most important, how we hope others will remember us.I hope to be remembered for generosity – for being generous with my time, treasure and spirit. Working at Our Lady of Peace, I’m blessed to be surrounded by people who channel their generosity into our mission. In this issue of The Journey, you will meet some of them. You will learn about our newest volunteers and what drew them to hospice work. You will meet Dr. Dennis Cross, our long-time physician who has retired but leaves a legacy of exemplary care and compassion. And, in keeping with the theme of remembrance and legacy, you will also learn the stories of donors who have committed to giving legacy gifts to OLP and will see the names of the founding members of our new Legacy Society. It was important to me to join this founding group. I wanted to know I had done my part to make sure this special place will always be here for our community, and I wanted to inspire others to do the same.My Irish heart is feeling extra sentimental as I prepare to be a grandma. I’m thinking about the past, and the future, and hoping someday, long after I’m gone, one of the things my grandchildren will remember is that their grandmother cared deeply about serving others at the end of life.
