When sitting down to contemplate what Christmas show to produce next in our now long line of Christmas productions, the only one that would not leave my mind was ‘A Christmas Carol’ by the talented Charles Dickens. Now, being a muppet-phile myself, there is no better version of this story done on lm, in my humble opinion, than that of ‘A Muppets Christmas Carol’. Having a natural air for the theatrical, this version captivated me from a young girl and has reliably lled my heart with Christmas joy year after year. So, last June, during our GAFA staff retreat, we sat down with freshly applied aloe to our sunburned skin to watch this holiday masterpiece. And as we all laughed and recited practically every line together it occurred to me why I love this time. In addition to the precious reminder of our Savior’s birth, Christmas brings you close to the ones you love and reignites the collective memory we share around this holiday. The word ‘carole’ nds its origins in “a celebratory dance” done with a group. I think of the times I have sung Christmas carols with others, and the emo-tions and palpable energy you could feel as a result. These coveys of Christmas cheer and sung glory of our Savior’s birth are felt most strongly when done together, and despite the recent commercialization of this sacred holiday, it is still the only time the world looks forward to hearing the familiar and comfort-ing prose of the traditional Christmas carol, each one echoing this consistent message- a Savior has come. I believe this is why Dickens chose ‘A Christmas Carol’ as his title. There are only two places in the entire book the word ‘carol’ is even mentioned or the idea of caroling is even portrayed. So, why entitle the entire novella thusly? It is my opinion that because of what the beloved carols evoke in all of us, as individuals and as a group... That we are broken and unworthy, but because of a loving God we have a way to know Him through the birth of Jesus. And when we hear a singing assembly declaring this wonderful truth aloud, our faith grows and increases with every strung word. And so, we end our version of this wonderful story with one of the most glorious carols of all, Hark the Herald Angels Sing, in which it so poignantly summarizes Ebenezer Scrooge’s transformation. “Hark the herald angels sing. Glory to the newborn king. Peace on earth and mercy mild. God and sinner reconciled...” So as this song speaks of the shepherds hearing for the rst time the happiest of news from angels on high, let us also take this time to hear it too for the rst or the hundredth time, the news of a loving savior coming to die to give us life abundantly with him. And for us, collectively in one accord we sing, ‘Hark the Herald angels sing, GLORY TO THE NEWBORN KING’!Merry Christmas,Alison Dutka Jones
