The 9/11 MemorialIt's EducationalThe general public has gathered at the Flame ofLiberty Memorial to remember 9/11 and pay honorto America’s 9/11 survivors, victims and heroes. Audience members learn about the extraordinaryacts of courage of America’s First Responders,Military Service Members who enlisted to serve inthe War on Terror, and two local heroic citizenswhose extraordinary acts of courage arecommemorated at the memorial - Todd Beamerand Mark Bingham. Todd and Mark werepassengers aboard United Flight 93 on 9/11, andwere two of the four-passenger team whoattempted to take back cockpit control fromterrorists. Their heroism thwarted the terrorists’mission to annihilate the U.S. Capitol Building andbring America’s government to an abruptshutdown. UA Flt 93 crashed in Shanksville,Pennsylvania rather than into the U.S. CapitolBuilding killing all 40 passengers onboard. Theactions of our local heroes saved thousands ofWashingtonian lives and preserved ourgovernment at a time when there was a critical callto action. To them, 9/11 is an event in history books... Local students not yet born when 9/11 occurred, learn about the events of that tragic day and the extraordinary acts of Todd Beamer and MarkBingham from Senior Advisor to the Secretary of Defense and Director of the DefenseInnovation Unit Doug Beck and Foundation President General Kent Hillhouse U.S. Army (Ret.)
