PRESENTSCHAPTER 9: LOVING YOUR STYLE

Page 2

IntroductionLoving Your StyleWe all go through “style” phases, especially when I look back at photos, I wonder, “What was I thinking?” So often I’ve heard from my daughter that she wishes I would have kept all of my clothes from when I was younger. I like to think that I was “in style” at the time, but really I was just following the trends. Now that I’m older, I don’t care much about what the trend is, I just wear what I’m comfortable in. My style is based on what I feel good in– and if I feel good in 10 year old clothing, then that’s what I’ll wear. Please enjoy this month’s podcast about why it’s important to love your style and how you can learn to be more “on trend.”2Click Here to Listen!

3Conversation StartersAt what age did you start picking out your own clothing?Remember: The younger person is tasked with initiating the conversation. When you were a teen, did you want to stand out or blend in?Was it important to you to wear certain styles of clothing? How did you decide what kind of style you wanted to have as you were growing up, or was that something you even thought about?Did you ever feel like an outsider? What was your experience with that?Has anyone ever laughed at you for what you were wearing, and if so, what did you have on?Did you subscribe to fashion magazines, and if so, which ones? How did that impact how you thought about your style? Why do women feel that they need to look attractive?

6InstructionsCreation Session #1Protect the surface with some paper towels or a tablecloth in a well-ventilated area. The alcohol ink will stain whatever it touches, so be sure to take care at this point. Place a few drops of each color into separate wells of the paint palette. Add 3-4 drops blending solution to dilute it. Using the paintbrush, begin experimenting with the ink on the tiles. Notice how it blends and mixes to create new colors. The alcohol ink can be placed directly onto the dry tiles. It dries very quickly OR try painting some blending solution onto the tile before applying the ink. Continue experimenting to find the “look” you love best. Each tile will have its own unique look and will all look great together, especially since the colors will go together. Tips! The blending solution can be used like an eraser. If you paint wet ink next to wet ink, the colors will blend together. If you paint wet ink next to dry ink, the colors will stay separate. Allow to dry completely for 24 hours. Start the conversation!

7InstructionsCreation Session #2Once the tiles have dried completely, it’s time to protect the ink with the varnish. Spread out some newspaper or disposable tablecloth to protect the surface. Follow the directions on the can carefully and use in a well-ventilated area. Spray multiple thin layers of varnish on the tiles to build up a nice protection. Allow to dry completely.Creation Session #3Time to glue the tiles onto the frame! Experiment with the design and only begin with the glue once you are satisfied with how the tiles are arranged. Once all the tiles are glued down, keep flat and allow to dry completely. Remember to use the Conversation Starters!Find a photo of you wearing your favorite outfit and put it in the frame!

My mom’s sense of style is unparalleled and unique. She loves bright colors– the brighter the better. She loves wearing patterns and fun clothes, no matter where she is going. My mom’s style represents her fun-loving spirit and openness. When I was growing up, I remember my mom blending in more with her clothing style, but she really came into her own after my father passed away. Her style evolved to match her personality. My mom likes to make an entrance and be noticed, and her clothing reflects that. My mom is confident in her sense of style and it’s all about what makes her happy.9Finding Your Style

She loves to make others happy, too, which is why she became a clown in her senior years. Talk about having a sense of style and wearing fun clothing! They say a picture is worth a thousand words, so I’m including more photos here than usual. What impacts your sense of style?10Finding Your Style
