PRESENTSCHAPTER 3: BEING INSPIRED
IntroductionBeing InspiredBeing and feeling INSPIRED is the theme for this edition as we design a picture frame. Inspiration is unique for each of us and we find it in different areas of our lives. As you talk about the ways in which you find inspiration, listen to your partner to uncover new ways you may find inspiration for yourself. I’ve included ideas for inspiring phrases, but consider using motivational pictures and words in your design for the art project. When you look at the frame, you’ll always be reminded of the positive affirmations that inspire you.As you prepare your space for the art project and conversation, listen to this podcast as we speak about being inspired.2Click Here to Listen!

Did you do it?Of all the inspirations that you have had over the years, which one was your most favorite that came to be a reality?Where do you look for inspiration? How do you move forward without feeling completely inspired? Was there ever an inspiration that you had in the past that didn’t turn out as you hoped? If so, how did you handle it?

5How To GuideWhat You Will NeedClick Here to Watch! Any size and shape frame with a thick, flat-edge border will work for this project. It can be unfinished wood or plastic – even an old frame you have around the house. Mod Podge Foam brushes Sharpie or colored markers Inspirational quotes- These can be different sizes or all small sized so they fit one page. You may either write them on a piece of cardstock, or print them out to fit your frame insert size. Optional extras: Use some found objects from Chapter 2 and adhere them with a glue gun or tacky glue.
What You Will Need6Place Inspiration HerePlace Inspiration HerePlace Inspiration HereAmy’s Tip:Make sure your frame has a flat surface to work on. It is important since you’ll be attaching different types of paper to it for decoration. They can be different sizes.Click Here to Purchase Supplies on AmazonThe items on this list are to give you ideas of what you can use and find around your house. Only order what you’ll need and look for scrapbook paper that you love!
7InstructionsCreation Session #1Designing the FrameTo begin, you’ll need to rip or cut the paper into small pieces, no larger than one inch. When you decide to use each piece, you may find you will want to shape it or make it smaller. Mix and match the colors or use one color in a variation of hues – your choice – and there is no one way to do it. Arrange the paper on the frame and keep designing until you like the look. Once you’ve decided how you want the papers to be arranged, then it’s time to adhere them to the frame. Spread a thin layer of the Mod Podge on the frame. Next, place paper on top of Mod Podge, smoothing out bubbles. To seal the paper, layer on another thin layer of Mod Podge. Don’t worry! The Mod Podge dries clear, and you’ll be left with either a shiny finish, or matte finish, depending on what type of Mod Podge you purchased. Start with a base of paper, let dry. You can leave your design just as is, or you can add more paper and objects on top of your first layer. It’s always up to you. If you decide to add a second layer, allow them to dry between layers. Use a glue gun to adhere heavier objects to the frame after everything has dried. Have fun with this creative process. Begin your conversation with the younger person asking the Conversation Starter questions!
8InstructionsCreation Session #2Designing the Inspired InsertsPrint or write out your favorite inspirational quotes to place in the frame. I’ve included some of my favorites. Use a piece of scrapbook paper as a base for background, cut it to size and write your quote on there. Maybe there is a particular image that inspires you…. “A and I are COMPLETE OPPOSITES when it comes to most interests, personality traits, and characteristics (she loves electronics, likes to be very independent, and chooses to do activities she enjoys before taking care of responsibilities vs me; I love nature/being outdoors/moving my body, I am a rule follower, a perfectionist, and really working on my people pleasing trait). Your art project was just what we needed! It challenges my perfectionism but gives me a safe place for A and I to talk about deeper things, while A is just in her element and loving every second of the project. There was no diving it up in different days, A wanted to do the whole thing at once AND is already saying she can’t wait for the next project to arrive. So thank you so much Amy for being brave and starting your own business (total boss babe) and giving my daughter and I this amazing gift!!!!”Their Pathway to Connection10
Who is someone that inspires me?…My daughter Sarah! Sarah has always had an uplifting, positive way about her and people are drawn to her energy. “I love Sarah” has been a constant phrase I’ve heard from people throughout her life. (In fact, I heard it today!) She’s friendly, independent, kind, thoughtful, inclusive, smart, and talented in musical theater and visual arts. She stands up for what she believes in and speaks her mind in a clear and passionate way.Since she was a young girl, my husband Donald and I believed she would enjoy being on stage. When given the opportunity in middle school to audition for the school musical theater performance, she didn’t hesitate. That was just the beginning.Sarah has honed her skills in acting and singing, taking voice lessons to develop her vocal skills. It’s obvious that her voice lessons have not only improved her singing ability, but also helped her gain confidence in other aspects of her life. 11Welcome! I’m Amy!
I have always had a secret (not so secret) desire to follow in her footsteps. Watching her on stage often brings me back to 8th grade when I played Lucy in “You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown.” That was a one-time opportunity for me, and now I have found ways to be on stage in my own way as an adult. I sing in a band - a very casual band and we don’t take it on the road, and I love it so much. I felt that taking voice lessons would help me improve my skills. I love to sing, but sometimes I can’t find the right note. I followed in Sarah’s footsteps and took lessons for a short time. Sarah is still performing on stage and I’m now inspired to look into our community theater group. Who knows? Maybe one day I’ll be on stage again?! Who or What Inspires You? 12Continued...
