Custom Log Home
on Lake McConaughy
This spectacular custom log
home on Lake McConaughy was
designed as a family retreat
and it was featured in Colorado
Expression Magazine’s August/
September 2015 edition: “Lake
McConaughy Log Home:
Remarkable Home is a Family
Labor of Love”.
Surprises that appear by design
to others were part of the
owner’s masterful plan. The
prow of the home was extended
for better vistas of the lake and
creates a feeling that the lake
is part of the home. The great
room wall’s original design of just a picture window was transformed to the massive peaked wall of glass to
showcase the spectacular views of the lake and the serenity of the stunning sunsets. The wrap-around deck
was expanded and extends from the master bedroom to the spacious gazebo featuring a gas re-pit with
stairs leading to the lake. Just imagine spending time on the gazebo for coee in the morning or enjoying an
evening of gazing at the stars in the moonlight!
Part of the charm of this home is the ability to bring friends and family together, whether by the hearth, the dining
room, the loft, the lower level, the deck, or the gazebo. The kitchen features custom birch cabinets and a large
island with a cooktop for enjoying time with friends at the bar while preparing delicious meals.
The home’s details are precise and masterfully crafted.
The two-story stone gas replace features a custom log
mantle. Radiant heating emanates throughout the gleaming
Australian cypress wood ooring throughout the home.
The stairs to the second oor were crafted by Roy Conway
of Nelson Construction with half-split logs with slots to
support the logs. There are spectacular views from every
window. The main oor master bedroom features a sliding
door to the deck and a large bay window.
The large loft overlooks the great room and boasts
spectacular views of the lake. Both upstairs bedrooms
have private baths, and balconies to enjoy the views of the
lake and sunsets.
The kid’s zone is the delightful “bunk room” that sleeps
nine in pine log beds. Imagine the laughter of children at
bedtime as they talk about their adventures on the lake or
playing on the basketball court adjacent to the garage!
Lake McConaughy Log Home
Remarkable Home Is A Family Labor of Love
As seen in Colorado Expression
Situated on more than an acre and nestled
among statuesque pine trees near Nebraska’s
Lake McConaughy, a stunning 5,000 square
foot lakefront log home stands as a labor of
love. The home was built from the ground up
by John Faught, president and CEO of The
Kempe Foundation, along with his family.
Growing up in a small town in Nebraska,
Faught and his extended family often went
to Lake McConaughy for vacations. “It’s only
50 miles from our home town, Elsie, and
everyone in our family enjoyed going to the lake,” he says. On
one such trip in 1999, he and his sisters decided it was time to
buy a piece of property. “I know the lake well and had my eye
on a specic lot, which wasn’t on the market, but I spoke with the
lessee association and two weeks later we bought the property,
says Faught.
The lot is centrally located on the lakeshore with stunning
panoramic views of the 25-mile long lake and gorgeous sunsets.
It’s situated in a location protected from wind, as the adjacent lot
is common ground that is planted with beautiful pine trees. Faught
relates, “There was a small A-frame house on the property, which
we tore down and dug out the basement and used the dirt to
build a bigger house to accommodate our large family.
With their parents in retirement and wishing to spend time with
the family, the purchase of the house on the lake was timely.
Faught shares, “My parents always liked to come to the lake and
my dad was able to enjoy it until 2004, and my mom 2010, when
they passed away.
MORE THAN A KIT
Construction commenced in 2000, with the purchase of a log
home kit from Idaho’s Lodge Log and Timber Products. “The kit
we bought was approximately a 2,500 square foot house,
but we made a few modications to extend the prow for better
vistas of the lake, wrap around the porch and build a gazebo,
describes Faught.
Faught and his two brothers-in-law did all of the work putting
up the log structure. “We added a garage to the basic plan and
extended the second oor over the garage for more bedroom
space. Every time we made modications the company sent new
logs,” he says.
Every log from the company is numerically marked for correct
placement. Faught says growing up on a working farm and ranch
provided the background he needed to construct the house.
“My two brothers-in-law are both really handy as well,” shares
Faught. “They would bring the logs to the property with a crane
and set them down. Sure enough, if we needed log number 19 it
was on the bottom and we had to move all of the logs to get to
that one log. We were constantly doing this, but we really had a
lot of fun,” Faught says with a chuckle.
Construction was completed in 2002; the 5,000 square foot
house has six bedrooms and comfortably accommodates
sleeping for 15 people. “In the plan there were rooms separated
by walls, but we wanted a great room connected to the kitchen
so we took walls out of the design,” shares Faught. One of the
big features and design changes made to the house was to build
a prow that jutted out to the west to capture the sunsets and
splendor of the lake views. “The addition of the prow was a big
deal for us to have it reach out to the lake, and make the lake a
part of the house—we also had to make the rooms big enough
for our whole family,” says Faught.
DINNER FOR 20
The grand kitchen spotlights a nook, an island, bar and two
sinks. “We all like to cook so we put the cooktop on the island
and raised the bar six inches so people can sit a little higher
on bar stools,” he says. In contrast to the pine logs, the family
installed birch cabinetry. “We come from a small community so
we commissioned the industrial arts program at the high school
to build a six foot telescoping table for us. When we are all there,
we pull the table into the great room and it seats 20.
Roy Conway of Nelson Construction masterfully crafted the stairs
leading to the second oor. “There was a huge beam at the top
of the house and it was way too heavy for us, so that is when we
brought in Nelson. Rather than using wood frame for the stairs
we used logs; Roy crafted slots in support log for the steps to set
in,” Faught says. The bedrooms are well-appointed with pine log
beds and the dormer over the garage is complete with log bunk
beds—it’s a favorite haven for the kids.
Windows throughout the house provide grand views of the lake,
from the walkout basement to the main oor and second oor
bedrooms. Of the master bedroom Faught describes, “Originally
the design had a door on the south side, so we changed that
and put in a bay window, which has outstanding views.” Comfy
overstued leather furniture surrounds the two-story replace
and radiant oor heating emanates through the Australian
cypress wood ooring that is installed throughout the house. The
wraparound deck leads to the gazebo, which is centered with a
re pit and has stairs leading down to the beach. An oversized
four-car garage completes the design of the home. “The idea for
the garage is that it could be used for a boat or cars and so we
created a lot of space,” shares Faught.
All of the wood in the house had to be conditioned, stained and
sealed. Sharing a funny story Faught describes, “When we were
putting on one of the coats, my two sisters—they talk a lot—were
helping in the master, when my brothers-in-law and I nished we
had covered the entire rst oor and they were still in the master
bedroom.
Of the home, Faught summarizes, “It was a family project that
provided a great bonding experience for us. We have made it
livable for a large family.
