The Book Thief is a historical fiction novel by the Australian authorMarkus Zusak, set in Nazi Germany during World War II. Published in 2006,The Book Thief became an international bestseller and was translated into 63languages and sold 17 million copies. In this book the friendship between Liesel and Rudy and her relationshipwith her stepparents creates a reflection on the possibilities that surround usand on our lives. Because of World War II not all people could read becausethe books were either thrown away or burned, but Liesel saved some books,gave them a new life and learned to read. The main themes of the book arethe dignity and humanity that Liesel Meminger demonstrates in a brutal anddisrespectful environment. Also the importance of reading that Liesel reflects at the time of saving thebooks, the reflection of solidarity and support is also a theme that the bookreflects through the friendship of Liesel and Rudy, but of course the bookexplores the traumas and sufferings caused by the war and how people adaptand try to survive.INTRODUCTION
