T he mission of the Tennessee Wildlife Ocers’ Association is to promote goodwill with the sportsmen and women of Tennessee, as well as to support Tennessee’s commissioned wildlife ocers. One way we do this is by social media and our website to promote outdoor events across the state, provide articles about cases wildlife ocers have prosecuted, and show pictures of ocers performing their everyday job duties. We want the sportsmen to know how hard our ocers work and the time that we put into making cases across the state. Even though our main goal is enforcing game laws, we also want the public to see the emphasis that we put on youth through outdoor days, shing rodeos, and youth hunts. These sites are updated weekly and are maintained by the ocers. The pictures that you nd on these sites are mainly taken by ocers in the eld and then sent to our Media Representative who uploads them to the Facebook page. Copies of these pictures are then sent to a website designer who uploads them to the TWOA website. We want these sites to be interesting and current with what is happening across the state. If you haven’t already, visit us on Facebook or take a look at our website www.tnwildlifeocermag.com. Hunting and Fishing Regulations are updated throughout the year and can be reviewed at www.tn.gov/twra.com The Tennessee Wildlife Ocers’ Association is excited to bring you these new media outlets to promote the great men and women who protect your resources!Tennessee Wildlife Ofcers’ AssociationPurchasing advertising space in this magazine does not entitle the advertiser to any special favors or privileges from any member of the Tennessee Wildlife Ofcers’ Association. 9www.tnwildlifeofcermag.comPresident’s President’s MessageMessageTWOA President and Wayne County Wildlife Officer Brandon TaylorIt’s been a busy summer across the state. Pretty soon the weather will start to change as deer season approaches. A great time was had in Provo, UT at the International Game Warden Association Conference! Utah’s Association put on a great conference, with great training, networking, and some beautiful country. It was wonderful to see old friends and make new ones. There aren’t many times you can get that many active and retired game wardens together in one room! If you’ve never made the trip to the International Game Warden Association Conference (formerly known as the NAWEOA Conference), next year’s conference will be in Penticton, British Columbia. One other part of the conference is the Officer Exchange Program where one lucky wildlife officer from the U.S. gets to pick a location in Canada and vice versa for a Canadian Officer. It sounds like Sgt. James Zucchelli, who won the Canadian Officer drawing with British Columbia, has picked our great state! If you’re interested in going, get that passport ready. As always, keep up the great work that you alldo every day! Congratulations to this year’sscholarship winners! Stay tuned as we’replanning an awards banquet early next year!I must also congratulate Lieutenant ColonelMatt Majors and Boating Investigators Captain Roy Smith and Captain Josh Landrum on their recent promotions! Thank you for your time and efforts in making this magazine a success. To all the businesses who have chosen to advertise their company in our magazine, I can’t thank you enough.Get outside and enjoys God’s beautiful creation!Stay Safe!Brandon Taylor

15www.tnwildlifeofcermag.comWildlife Officer Hunter Daniels has received the honor of being named Mississippi Flyway Waterfowl Enforcement Officer of the Year. The Mississippi Flyway Council annually recognizes full-time law enforcement officers who make outstanding contributions to the protection of waterfowl in the flyway states. Hunter’s assigned work area is Wilson County, which is one of the top waterfowl hunting destinations in Middle Tennessee. Currently there are 134 public duck blinds on Old Hickory Wildlife Management Area. Parts of Old Hickory WMA are located within Wilson County and are managed primarily for waterfowl hunting. Officer Daniels routinely assists other officers on Percy Priest Lake and Cheatham Reservoir with law enforcement efforts. In addition to waterfowl enforcement efforts, he patrols Old Hickory Lake during the summer, one of the top visited lakes in Tennessee. Very active in public outreach, Daniels works with youth, school and adult organizations on waterfowl education and participation. Recently he led an effort to instruct wood duck biology at Lebanon High School. Students were able to learn about wood duck nesting habitat as well as efforts by TWRA to increase the needed habitat. They also constructed 250 wood duck boxes to be placed around Old Hickory Lake. Daniels taught on multiple occasions at the Andrew Jackson Fraternal Order of Police camp to reach inner city children on wildlife, hunting, fishing, and environmental issues. Each of the last three years he coordinated youth hunts on Old Hickory WMA. In addition to the youth hunts he also led a group of military veterans on a duck hunt.Wildlife Officer Hunter daniels recOgnized as WaterfOWl enfOrcement Officer Of tHe YearHunter Daniels holds his award for being named Mississippi Flyway Waterfowl Enforcement Ofcer of the Year. Violations included over the daily bag limit of ducks, unplugged shotguns, hunting without a license, and navigation lights. He also assisted other agencies outside his normal enforcement duties. Daniels is in his fifth year with the TWRA. He previously worked in Canada for Delta Waterfowl conducting diving duck nest surveys. He has a bachelor’s degree in Wildlife Sciences from Tennessee Tech University. He will also be recognized at a future meeting of the Tennessee Fish and Wildlife Commission. In addition to Tennessee, the Mississippi Flyway includes Alabama, Arkansas, Indiana, Illinois, Iowa, Kentucky, Louisiana, Michigan, Minnesota, Mississippi, Missouri, Ohio, Wisconsin, and the Canadian provinces of Saskatchewan, Manitoba, and Ontario.Wildlife Ofcer Hunter Daniels Recognized As Waterfowl Enforcement Ofcer of the Year

27www.tnwildlifeofcermag.comRyne Goats has been named the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency Wildlife Officer of the Year for the Southeastern Association of Fish and Wildlife Agencies (SEAFWA). He was assigned to Maury County, but recently transferred to Giles County. He also works throughout the 13 Middle Tennessee counties in TWRA District 22. Goats’ award was announced by Col. Darren Rider, of TWRA’s Boating and Law Enforcement Division. Other TWRA state finalists for the award were Brant Luker, Region I and Bradley Harris, District 11; Jason Shapton, District 21; Dustin Buttram, Region III and Bryon Franklin, District 32; Justin Pinkston, Region IV and Riley Melton, District 41. The officers were selected for their efforts in teamwork, public outreach, innovation, attitude, leadership, and achievements.“It is always a challenge to select just one officer out of a group of officers that have all gone above and beyond their duty of ensuring Tennessee hunters, anglers, and boaters have safe and enjoyable recreational opportunities,” said Col. Darren Rider. “All of the state finalists are to be commended for their professionalism and extra effort they displayed this year. We are especially proud of Officer Goats, who truly excelled in all aspects of his job.” Along with his law enforcement duties, Goats is very active in public outreach and educational events including youth hunts, youth fishing events, community and school group events, and hunter and boating education classes. These public relations efforts have positively reached more than 11,000 people. In another effort to help people enjoy the outdoors, Goats initiated a fishing pole and tackle checkout program at his county’s public library. His youth deer hunt had 70 hunters and some of the 35 harvests were donated to the Hunters for the Hungry program. The youth turkey hunt featured seven youth who recorded their first harvests. Goats also partnered with Redneck Blinds and United Farm and Co-Op to construct two youth handicap mobile hunting blinds for these hunts. Officer Goats has also prioritized continuing education. Recently, he completed an ALERR-ERASE, Basic Life Support and First Aid instructor certification. This will allow him to be an Instructor at the Tennessee Wildlife Officer Training Academy along with in-service trainings for active officers. Goats will be recognized at the annual SEAFWA Conference in October, which this year is in Corpus Christi, Texas. SEAFWA is an organization composed of state agencies with the primary responsibility for management and protection of the fish and wildlife resources in 15 states, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands.rYne gOats named sOutHeastern assOciatiOn Of fisH and Wildlife agencies tennessee Wildlife Officer Of tHe Year

51www.tnwildlifeofcermag.comOn August 7, 2022, I was patrolling by boat on Dale Hollow Lake in Clay County. I received a call from a trout fisherman below Dale Hollow Dam on the Obey River concerning two people taking over the limit of trout. The creel limit on the Obey is seven trout, no length limit. The caller stated that they had caught their limit and were gone from the river for some time then retuned and continued to keep fishing and catching trout. I parked my patrol boat at the marina and made my way to the complaint location. I called the complainant back and obtained a person description as well as a vehicle description. When I made it to the scene the white Honda car described was parked off the side of the road near the dam. The complainant called me back and informed me that the subjects had packed up and were leaving. I made the decision to sit in the bushes by the car and wait for the subjects to return to ensure they did not get rid of any evidence. After about five minutes of waiting, the two subjects walked by me with fishing equipment and a cooler. I waited to until they got to their car to announce myself and approach them. When they popped the trunk, another large cooler was inside. I then announced myself as a state wildlife officer and checked their licenses. Both subjects were licensed anglers and told me they had been coming to this river for five years to catch trout. They did not want to open the coolers, but I was able to see the fish in them when they had opened them to put the fish in the car. I then had them to open the coolers and counted out the fish. There were 36 trout in their possession that they had caught that morning…22 over the creel limit. I issued citations to both fishermen and confiscated all 22 trout as evidence. I then took a statement from my complainant, thanked him for looking out for the resources we are there to protect, and was able to donate the fish to his family. The two subjects were from the Nashville area and had been coming to the Dale Hollow Dam and abusing the resource for five years. Finally, they were caught and prosecuted in court. They were fined and both subjects received one-year fishing revocations. 22 OverBy Clay County Wildlife Ofcer Dillon Maynard

59www.tnwildlifeofcermag.comI had only been working for the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency (TWRA) for less than four months when the early October bear season opened in North Carolina. Unicoi County shares its border with three North Carolina Counties: Mitchell, Yancey and Madison. In Tennessee, bear season did not open until December. The Tennessee opening day of Ruffed Grouse season coincided on the same day as the North Carolina early bear season. These non-synchronous hunting seasons, closed seasons and shared borders, makes for some issues for a neophyte Game Warden. My status as the “newbie” to this exciting job had me chomping at the bit to get out into the forest, streams and fields to catch poachers and dastardly deed doers. When I reported for work in Unicoi County in August of 1983, as the new guy, I was given the worst patrol vehicle in the whole work area. Our work area, known as TWRA’s Area 43, included eight counties, the most northeastern counties in Tennessee. These counties are, some say, the most remote and rugged topography in the Volunteer State. The Nolichuckey River has cut a beautiful valley between the higher mountains to the East and Buffalo Mountain to the west. A retired Wildlife Officer, George Horton, once told me that if you could stomp Unicoi County flat, it would be the size of Texas. My Supervisor, Ed Hull, called me around supper time in early October and asked me to meet him and his Assistant, Wayne Lingerfelt, at the Appalachian Fairgrounds at 9:00 am the next morning. I was getting a brand-new work truck! I hardly slept a wink that night. The next morning, I drove over to Gray, Tennessee at the Fairgrounds and there sat the most beautiful sight. A shining, off the showroom, clean, Olive Drab green, 1984 Ford F-150 4x4 short bed, regular cab, pickup truck, nO BusinessTales from old Area 43; an excerpt from— AN APPALACHIAN GAMEKEEPER’S SOLILOQUY OF HUMOROUS TALES:GAME WARDEN STORIES OF PEOPLE AND PLACES OF UPPER EAST TENNESSEE, Vol. 1 by R.L. Pete Wyatt To order a copy of Pete’s book, see page 77.complete with a winch and dual gas tanks! It was a Game Warden’s wildest dream. I climbed in that most wonderful work truck. It even had that “new truck smell”. I could not wait to get this truck off the pavement! However, many of my work area cohorts that had more seniority and time in grade than did I, were not happy that I was the recipient of the new truck. My partner, Mick Masters, was a mountain of a man. He put his arm around my shoulder as a half hug at the meeting and said, “Son, don’t listen to those fussbudgets, me and old Rex here are blacktop Game Wardens. If’n when we take a notion to get off the asphalt, we’ll git you to take us to the woods in that new truck. It suits you better’n us anyhow!” with that he slapped his leg and chuckled. As Davy Crockett once said, “Make sure you’re right, then go ahead!” I hope that was before his trip to Texas. The U. S. Forest Service (USFS) had hired a young college student from East Tennessee State University as an intern for the fall. The young man’s name was Claude Johnson. Linda Brown from the USFS called me around 8:00 am on a Friday morning. Linda said that their intern needed someone for him to job shadow with the coming weekend and asked if we could accommodate them. “Why sure Linda, have him meet me in the morning at the parking lot of the State Fish Hatchery off Carolina Avenue in Erwin. He can ride with one of us. We’ll train him good for you!” I laughed sarcastically. Young Claude was at the Fish Hatchery when I arrived. He was sitting on the tailgate of his Toyota pickup truck. His USFS uniform was nicely pressed and crispy new, including a ball cap. He had a brand-new backpack and a small red and white igloo cooler. He was ready for his Continued on page 65

65www.tnwildlifeofcermag.comwilderness experience, and we Game Wardens were ready to be his guides. Mick and Rex met Claude and I at the Truck Stop on Asheville Highway. They both got their free bottomless cup of coffee and fraternized with the locals. Mick called it “gathering intel”. After some slight discussion, my senior training officers had decided the best game plan was for them to patrol for obvious violations in the valley and along the Nolichuckey River, while Claude and I field tested my new truck in the mountains. Mick yelled at me, “Hey Son, you know the other day when we drove back through Unaka Sprangs and I showed you that dirt road off to the left of the rifle range? Well, a feller told me this mornin’ one of them Sheltons struck a bear track last night coon huntin’ in thar unner No Business Ridge. You and Claude take that new truck of yourn, foller ‘at gravel road til it forks left-handed and look for sign. They’s a heavy frost down here. Up yander youns orta tell whether a body’s back in thar and up to no good. Call us on the radio if’n you need us.” Mick guffawed as he and Rex made a beeline to the Watering Hole down on the River for a pit stop and see the Snyder’s for a refill on their coffee, and oh yeah, gather more intel. There’s nothing like exploring new territory when you are wandering aimlessly with a purpose. We travelled the paved road along the south side of the Nolichuckey River that took us through the near ghost town of Unaka Springs. This little place once was a vacation destination in the late 1880’s. Tourists would ride by train to stay in the “luxurious” Unaka Springs Hotel, drink from the natural springs found there. The Hotel sits empty, on our left, as we passed by. The well with the healing waters was spewing like a fountain on our right. We didn’t stop. We were on a mission. Maybe it was the spewing water, but Claude asked me to stop so he could get rid of some breakfast coffee and get a Mountain Dew from his little igloo cooler in the back. While we were stopped, I assessed the situation. It did look like a vehicle track had churned the rocks up going up the No Business Road. Judging from the width of the tracks, it was probably a small Jeep. As Claude situated himself in the truck cab, I locked the hubs on both front wheels and engaged the four-wheel drive. At this point in my life, I had owned four Jeeps. So, I was not only a Jeep aficionado, but an experienced off-road driver. As Claude and I made our way up the rough, narrow, bumpy, winding road climbing higher and higher in elevation, my attention was affixed to the Jeep tracks I was following. After about twenty minutes we came to a clearing and a very, very steep climb that the Jeep appeared to have gone up the near vertical hill. Claude said nervously, “We’re not really going to climb that hill are we? I don’t see a road or a path.” I stopped the truck and before I answered him, I’ll have to admit, I didn’t see a road or a path either. However, those Jeep tracks went right up that steep slope. So, there must be something up there. “Aww, heck Claude, grab ahold of something. Watch this!” Yeah, I know. You are right…those words hardly ever have a good ending. I jammed the shifter to low range and up that slope we went. I will admit, my butt was beginning to pucker a bit about two-thirds the way up that slope. We were in that cab kinda vertical. I felt like an Astronaut, but not pulling as many G’s. Well, we reached the top. And, when we did it was noticeably abrupt…KERSPLASH!!! Claude screams out, “Oh my God, we’re sinking! Get out! Quick get out! We’re gonna drown!” I’ll admit, for a second or two I was a bit confused, bewildered, befuddled, and discombobulated. Now you tell me. How can we be nearly vertical, climbing a sheer slope one second, and then the next second be sinking in water? The answer is coming. Claude left his seat and is trying to climb Continued on page 71No Business

It appears we have driven into a pond.” I was still befuddled, to say the least. Why would anyone put a pond in the middle of the woods?” I mumbled to myself. I opened my door and the truck shifted slightly. Claude leaped from his side of the cab, over my lap, out my door and ran off about twenty yards away. I guess he felt safer further away, I don’t know why? We had driven my brand-new Ford F 150, Olive drab green, 4x4 truck with double gas tanks and a winch into a freakin’ pond in the middle of nowhere. I stood there for a few minutes and took it all in. Here we are, hanging on the edge of a pond dam. A third of the truck is submerged in the pond and two thirds is teetering on the lip of the dam. How did this happen? The little Jeep’s driver obviously had been here before and drove up the face of the earthen dam and at the precise moment, that driver turned a sharp left and did not drive into the pond. We didn’t hang the sharp Louie; we dunked the brand new truck. We baptized my beautiful baby! Claude hasn’t said a word. He’s just been pacing wiping sweat off his brow. Uttering only to himself. At least I had the presence of mind to cut the engine off. I was cognizant that we had submerged part of the cab. The driver’s door was still open, so I slid in just enough to reach the radio and called for Mick and Rex. The radio was still functioning but barely. “Where youns at?” Asked Mick “We’re in the pond at No Business!” I replied. “At the pond? Did youns find anything up thar?” The radio was popping and fading. “Mick, we are IN THE POND. THE TRUCK IS IN THE POND. WE NEED HELP!” I hoped the message got through. A few minutes went by before Mick responded. “All right. I’ll get ahold of the Ford place in Erwin and we’ll get help started your way. Hang tight.” I sensed the seriousness in his tone. “10-4 We will be standing by.” For the first time since our splash down I had a feeling of relief. I heard a familiar sound coming toward us. The sewing machine-like, monotone, humming of a Jeep engine. It was one of the Wilson boys and his grouse dog. “Buddy, what have you done? How’d you manage this? Man, oh, man!” He stopped the Jeep and got out, shaking his head in disbelief. “Didn’t you know this helicopter pond was here?” “Helicopter pond?” I asked. “Yeah, the Forest Service has these ponds scattered all up and down the Forest from Virginia to Georgia. Looks like you found this one. They use them to dip water out of to fight fire. Didn’t that boy tell you?” He was pointing at Claude. “Naw. Claude there is a student at ETSU, just dressed up like a Forest Ranger. He’s a student intern…he’s greener than I am. This is my first trip up here on No Business Ridge!” Claude still was muttering to himself about forty yards away. Chad Wilson and his dog had been Ruffed Grouse hunting. He was on his way back home to get ready for his shift with the railroad. I knew my Faux incident would be all over town in two hours. About an hour passed before Mick arrived with “Shorty” Davis, and the wrecker. Shorty was chewing on a half-smoked cigar fussing about breaking one of his mirrors on the way in. The rhododendron just seems to reach out and grab his high, wide side mirror. Mick just shook his head and slapped his leg. “Son, when you do thangs, you do ‘em up big time! This beats a hen a rootin’, I swear it does! And to beat it all, you’re still on probation ain’t ye?” Ah ha ha! His laugh echoed across the pond. Shorty got all the chains and cables hooked Continued on page 77

77www.tnwildlifeofcermag.comNo Businessto my truck. Shorty chewed his cigar down to a nub as he slowly pulled my once pristine truck out of its almost watery grave. He maneuvered it down the pond dam like a Puppet Master. After Shorty got the truck to the road, off the mountain we went. Shorty ripped another mirror off, this time a rock overhang grabbed this one. Honestly, I don’t know how he drove that wrecker up that narrow road, but he did. We took my truck to the Fish Hatchery where a retired mechanic, Charlie Washburn met us. Mr. Washburn scoped everything out. We pushed the truck into the garage bay. He said give him a couple of days and he’d have it running again. I called the Dispatcher at Morristown and took the next three days off. Mr. Washburn drained the oil pan and, true to his word, fixed it back as good as new. Except the new truck smell was forever gone. Somehow, Mick explained away the wrecker bill. He took the heat to shield me. The best partner a man could ever have. I never confessed to anything. But, there were rumors. I never saw Claude again. I don’t know whatever happened to him. He had such great potential as a Forest Ranger. EDITOR’S NOTE: Copies of Pete’s books may be ordered directly from him for $15 per book plus $5 shipping; or two books for $30 plus $7 shipping. 85www.tnwildlifeofcermag.comIn June of 2018 the White Oak WMA work crew announced the retirement of the outhouse at White Oak WMA after 23 years of taking crap from this agency. That’s right folks, indoor plumbing had arrived! No longer did we have to check the seat for spiders, wasps, or other critters. Toilet paper no longer required the protection of a plastic zip-loc bag. This outhouse began its career for TWRA circa 1995. Jeff Joyner was the manager when his supervisor Jim Hamlington got tired of seeing 5-gallon buckets used for a toilet (he might have even stepped in some of it once upon a time). He instructed Joyner to dig a hole and build an outhouse and this is what we got. This outhouse proudly served under managers Jeff Joyner, Jim Hamlington, Wes Winton, Pete Creech, Steve Henderson, Brandon Gilbert, and Chad Harden. It hosted many guests over the years including our current executive director. Other visitors have refused its services preferring to squat in the woods or hold tight until they could make it to the nearest gas station (like that is any better). To each their own, I guess. The current WMA crew would sincerely like to thank TOSHA for their visit to the WMA shop and lovely follow-up letter in 2012. (That’s not a typo, it really took 6 years for the funding, design, and construction of the new office.) If not for TOSHA, we would likely be remodeling the outhouse rather than removing it. So, if you get a chance, stop by and see the new office and toilet if you are in the neighborhood. The outhouse is gone but if you look closely, you may notice the grass is a little greener in one location. The last time the outhouse was seen or heard of, it was enjoying its retirement as a rustic yard ornament at an undisclosed location. gOOdBYe Ol’ friendBy Chad Harden, Region 2 WMA Coordinator

93www.tnwildlifeofcermag.comHave you ever seen your life truly flash before you own eyes? Or, have you ever legit thought there is no way this ends well? Okay. Well, then story time! One snowy, sunny day, two other great guys and I decided to work on the mountain. Yeah, we do those things! It was cold and it had rained the prior day then turned into snow, which made snow covered ice. I am just setting the stage for the rest of the story! We checked a few people and heard there were a bunch of others on the west side of the mountain, so we decided to pull up shop and patrol that way. One of the three of us had street tires and the others had mud tires. Off. Joel Hyden decided to go the road and meet us on the other side. Sgt. Jeff Roberson and I decided to go up and over the mountain… you know we ain’t skeert! Now with that being said, I kind of pride myself in popping up in places where people ask, “How did he even get here???” So, up the mountain we went and my truck went like a tank! At the top of the mountain, we stopped for a minute to check some people. Hint #1: A guy says, “It’s pretty slick going down that way, I’m not sure I would go… I’m not sure you could make it.” Who does he think he is telling us we can’t make it, he don’t know us?! Hint #2: This one is a good one! Two side-by-sides go down the mountain and I looked over at my partner and said, “Dude they are just going way too fast!” They were flying down the mountain. It looked like a pinball that just got shot out of the shooter and the machine on full tilt! I said, “People just don’t know how to drive. I’ll get down and let you know when I make it!” At this very point, nine out of the ten voices in my head said, “It’s just a little snow, don’t be a wimp” and the tenth voice said, “You’re crazy!” BUT he definitely mumbled it. So, with four wheel drive low and the diff lock pulled, I eased about ten feet over the hill. I’m not sure what the truck said but I feel like it snOWY daYsBy District 41 OHV Sgt. Dustin Burkewas along the lines of, “And that’s all I got!!” Now, rewind to hint #2, people just don’t know how to drive down the mountain! Well, at this moment, I realized that I obviously fell into this category because she just took off! With a bluff on one side and trees and a ditch on the other, I said to myself, “Just get the ditch to slow you down because everyone knows, you DON’T hit the brakes going down a slick hill!” But at this point, I was already clocking off miles per hour faster than a bite size snicker being eaten at a weight watcher’s program! And, might I add, I was developing a snicker in my pants at this moment. Well, I pushed the brakes to the floor and luckily the truck turned completely sideways and dug into the snow stopping sideways against a water table halfway down the mountain. So, there is absolutely no way to get back up, and I’m halfway down on a small bench of this hill. I took a breath, regrouped, and said, “Lord Jesus, WTC was that?” And once again those voices said, “Dude you SMOKED THAT!” And I believe at this point, the tenth voice was legit crying!! There’s no crying in baseball and there dang sure is no crying on the mountain. So, I back up, straighten the truck up and ease over the second hill. This time it wasn’t even a slow start, my truck made a clunk and we were off to the races again. At this point, I was going legit Mach-Jesus and heading towards the bluff, so some kind of crazy instinct or stupidity kicked in and I hit the brake and hit the gas at the same time, which brought the rear end around pointing me down the mountain! I could then see the “non driving group” that went before me at the bottom running towards side-by-sides to move them out of the way in a scramble like they were running from an idiot in a truck making magic happen! 99www.tnwildlifeofcermag.comSnowy Days I came sliding to rest right beside them! They were screaming and clapping like I had just won the Daytona 500! I rolled the window down, and the guy says, “DUDE, I can’t believe you just did that! Either you’re freaking crazy or just have the biggest B**** of anyone!” I said, “I don’t know for sure what it was, BUT WE WILL NOT BE DOING IT AGAIN!” I got on the radio, trying to hide my broken, shaken, maybe I just revisited puberty, voice and said, “GO THE OTHER WAY.” All I could think was, “Do not seek the treasure! It’s been bushwhacked.” I said, “Brother, all I ask is, tell people these game wardens can pop up and go anywhere!” He assured me he would and that they had nothing but respect for what they just saw. I continued to my destination and checked a bunch of people with the last few saying they had heard about the game warden coming down the mountain like he owned it! What they didn’t know was that brave game warden may have crapped all over himself, possibly three or four times! Is there a moral of this story? Hell, I don’t know! I want to say, “Don’t worry, game wardens can pop up anywhere.” But in all reality, “Listen closely to the tenth voice cause when he’s screaming and suck face ugly crying like a sissy girl, you may be too far in!” Either way, there are people out there that will have the story sounding like I came down that mountain Baja style, stepped out of the truck sideways and was every bit of 6’5” tall and said, “Let me see your license!” I assure you that I did not exit my truck at any point either for...we will call it tactical reasons.

Sims, Lieutenant Eric Anderson, and Wildlife Officer Montana Michelson, made their way to the barge and collected the stranded fawns. Sims says, “The mother was on shore snorting for the fawns. I don’t think this could have went any better and this is one of the best days I’ve had at work in a long time.”TVA staff assisted in the rescue and the fawns were safely released onto a nearby bank.

Now, I would have drug the deer onto the ground or all the way into the truck bed but Wally decided to gut the deer on the edge of his truck tailgate. He was just about through with the process when the deer slid off the tailgate and hit the hard asphalt. When the deer hit the ground an “Old Faithful” style geyser of blood shot up directly into Wally’s face and chest! He looked like he had just bludgeoned someone with an axe. There was blood dripping down his shirt onto his pants. There was a fine misty spray that covered his face. His hands and forearms were already soaked in red from the gutting process. Wally looked like he was playing a part in a horror movie. He finished up the gutting process and I helped him load the deer back in his truck. He then splashed some lake water on his hands and face and excitedly headed toward the nearest gas station to purchase some ice. I went back in service and continued business as normal. About ten minutes later, Wally called me and said he might need help. One of the clerks at the gas station ran to the back room of the store with a phone when she saw bloody Wally. The other clerk hesitantly rang him up for his two bags of ice. Wally fully expected to be pulled over on the way home for suspicion of murder. I laughed and told him I’d stay in the area if he needed bailing out. He called me after reaching home and said he’d made out ok. He was already stringing the deer up for processing.Several years ago, while on duty, I received a call from dispatch about a deer that was stuck in a fence. I went to the call location and unfortunately the deer would not survive its injuries so I had to dispatch it. I loaded the deer up in my patrol truck and attempted to find someone who would utilize the deer for meat. I called several folks on my list before I finally got an excited “yes” from an acquaintance named Wally. Wally said his freezer was getting low. It was mid-summer and he would be out of meat long before deer season rolled around in the fall. I met Wally at the Georges Creek boat ramp, filled out a possession tag for him, and transferred the deer over into his truck. This is where the story gets interesting. Wally asked if he could gut the deer there at the ramp. He wanted to get some ice in the murder at geOrges creekBy District 41 Sgt. Jeff Roberson

117www.tnwildlifeofcermag.comThe 2nd annual TWRA fitness event held at the John Sevier Range in Region 4 was a huge success with officers and TWRA staff from all across the state participating. Participants took part in one of two events that day, the MURPH challenge or the GORUCK walk. Both of these events are very physically challenging to complete. The MURPH consists of a one mile run then 100 pull-ups, 200 push-ups, and 300 air-squats, then finishing with another one-mile run, all while wearing a 20 lb. weighted vest. The GORUCK walk consisted of participants carrying a 30lb weighted pack and completing 1-mile laps of the facility for a period of two hours. This year’s event had a larger turnout with participants as far away as Region 1. Everyone attending this year’s event received a shirt and hat along with lunch provided after the workout. This is a great way to begin or even maintain a healthier lifestyle for TWRA personnel while enjoying a great day of fellowship. This will continue to be an annual event and in hopes to gather further participation it will be held at two locations in 2024. The John Sevier Hunter Ed. 131www.tnwildlifeofcermag.comTalk of bears around Middle Tennessee is somewhat unheard of, at least in the southern counties. I’ve heard stories of folks having seen one that ventured off the plateau, heading towards Nashville and then turning around and heading back east. I never thought I’d actually be getting calls about one, much less two, during my career in the county where I worked. That all changed for me on June 5, 2023. That day started out pretty normal. I got up early and headed to Region 2 to work a regional office security shift. That morning while I was sitting in the cubicle working on getting caught up on some CAD stuff, my phone rang. On the other end of the line was a guy that mentioned he had gotten a photo of a bear on his trail camera that morning on the southwestern side of Maury Co. Being the skeptical game warden that most of us are, I asked him to send the photo to me figuring it was something else other than a bear. Up until this point, most of the calls I’ve ever received were about folks seeing or getting pictures of cougars, which most of the time end up being a bobcat, so I sorta figured it would be something other than a bear. When I received the photo there was no doubt what it was. It was a bear. After talking with a few officers, this bear probably came from Lewis Co. since a guy had recently had one on camera at his feeder. On Tuesday or Wednesday I’d heard rumor of another bear around the eastern part of Maury Co. The next morning it was confirmed to be another bear wandering around some cars on a security camera. On Thursday afternoon, I received a call from an individual I’d caught poaching deer a year or two earlier in Spring Hill who said his wife had seen a bear in their backyard. I asked him if he had any bait out. He hesitantly said, with a nervous tone in his voice, “Ummm...no, there shouldn’t be.” I replied with, “It’s ok to have it out now in the summer but if you do and he finds it, you’ll likely have a bear hanging around until it’s all gone.” I don’t guess he had anything out because the bear showed up in Franklin the next day and then Brentwood. Throughout the following days, I saw posts on Facebook about a bear being seen towards Nashville so I assume it was the same bear. I saw a photo on Facebook after it’d been spotted in Nashville that it probably just wanted its photo taken at one of the famous murals in downtown. I’m not sure where either of the bears has ended up now but that week will stand out as one of the highlight chapters of my career. middle tennessee BearsBy Maury County Wildlife Ofcer Ryne Goats

145www.tnwildlifeofcermag.comSeveral officers from across the state completed a patrol rifle instructor class held at the John Sevier Hunter Education Center April 10 – 14. Cesar Garcia, Chief of Police at East Tennessee State University, taught the class. This was a 40-hour post certified class teaching the students how to properly instruct utilizing agency-issued patrol rifles. The class covered areas in basic nomenclature of patrol rifles as well as techniques and tactics when using rifles during the course of their duties. Students were required to create lesson plans and teach them back to the class and conduct shooting drills throughout the week. After successful completion of the course, all eight officers are now patrol rifle instructors and can be a great asset to the agency for future firearms training. 171www.tnwildlifeofcermag.comThe 2nd Annual Maury Co End of Season Doe-Out Hunt took place during the second juvenile hunt of the season on January 15, 2023. This hunt is designed to get new youth hunters outdoors and assist local landowners that have had deer-related issues, whether crop damage or high deer density, to take deer off the landscape. Most of the youth hunters hunt all day with a break at lunch to swing by United Farm & Home Coop in Columbia and put their name in the hat for door prizes and lunch. Since the hunt is located in Unit L, these hunters are allowed up to three does a day and one buck (with landowner approval). Hunters have the option of keeping their deer or they can donate it to the Hunters for the Hungry program at no cost to them. Successful hunters throughout the day are awarded two tickets for each doe harvested and one ticket for a buck harvest to go into a grand prize drawing that is held that night at the end of the hunt. This year we had 70 youth hunters registered and 35 deer were harvested with nine being donated to the Hunters for the Hungry program.
