Special thanks to all of the amazingly talented female photographers who contributed their work and to the female music artists who inspired me to do this project In a male dominated music industry the female musicians and photographers represented in this book are helping to pave the way for equal representation We owe them our respect and support Ibbi Schwartz Editor Listen to the Fourth Line Ladies playlist on Spotify to hear music by the women featured in this book 3

In 2018 Lollapallooza announced their lineup The first female dominated act did not appear until the fourth line Fourth Line Photo Book aims to bring attention to the lack of gender diversity in live music recorded music and the overall music industry This inequality is depicted through photographs of female artists shot by female concert photographers alarming statistics about the state of the industry and quotes from musical artists and industry professionals Since the 2018 Lollapallooza lineup which glaringly underrepresented women there have been huge strides in the awareness of this issue and the intent to do something about it The PRS Foundation s Keychange Initiative is one organization encouraging change They ve challenged festivals to achieve a 50 50 gender balance in festival lineups by 2022 Initially 45 festivals made the pledge Since then more than 120 festivals worldwide have also signed It is interesting to note of the current pledges only 12 festivals are from the United States Lollapallooza is not one of them There s clearly no shortage of female talent what will it take to get them on the stage 5
