Adam Bryk Board PresidentAdam Bryk (President) Brendan Dellandrea(Treasurer) Anne Bermonte Naomi Brown James Buchanan Jenny Gumbs Naguib Keval Caroline O'BrienKatherine Pollock Laurence Siegel Elaine Stavro Heather Yamoah 2023-2024Board of DirectorsI think back to the shows and many other events that I attended this past year - TarragonTalks, the Greenhouse Festival of new works, our Withrow Park Starlight Soiree, PlayReading Week to name just a few - events where I had the opportunity to speak with manymembers of the audience and the communities that we serve. What I heard in both thepositive and constructive feedback was the strength of love for the Tarragon in thecommunity. This and the strong desire that we remain a force in the Canadian theatrecommunity, fulfilling our role as home for the Canadian Playwright and with the values thatnurture Tarragon as our country’s Neighbourhood Theatre, no matter what province orterritory they come from. This year I’d like to start by thanking all of our subscribers andsupporters that came out to the Tarragon to experience the newCanadian plays that our team works so hard to develop and share. Led by Mike and Andrea, the team produced wonderful and important work, and I thankthem and every member of our staff as we look back on the season.I am proud of the work that we are doing not only in newplay development but also in education, dramaturgy andtraining; providing space for a wide range of perspectivesfrom the community - artistic and otherwise - to be able tomeet, work and create. As we continue to emerge from the pandemic now two fullseasons since - we continue to see evolution. One changeis in our leadership. I want to thank Andrea Vagianos, ourdeparting Managing Director, who was truly remarkable inher strength and efforts to guide us through Covid and thedisruption that has followed.A big welcome to Lisa Li who is returning to Toronto fromWinnipeg as our new Executive Director. Working withMike, and with a terrific staff, we are excited about thepath ahead.I look forward to meeting you out at the Tarragon!Adam Bryk

Mike PayetteArtistic Director9What a gift to welcome so many loyal and new audiences to the Tarragon community throughoutour 23/24 season. Thank you for being a part of an unforgettable year! There is no question that re-introducing theatre into our lives has been a courageous journey in apost-pandemic world. And still, Tarragon remains steadfast in its commitment to offer a widescope of stories and programming that embraces the richness of many generations andCanadian experiences. In 23/24, we welcomed back exceptional acclaimed playwrights to the theatre and introducednew award-winning creators to our artistically curious and devoted audiences. The collection ofthese stories gave us lenses to envision worlds within and around us, to travel time and spacebetween generations, and explore the meaning of home. While some of our shows of the seasontraveled across Canada to excited audiences, here at home, we also welcomed newpartnerships from independent companies across Toronto that revealed the importance ofcommunity collaboration while showcasing the work of our grassroots theatre companies. To walk the halls of Tarragon is to have our senses alive. The high level of new play processesplaces us in the eye of creativity and there is not a day that goes by where a studio isn't teemingwith potential for the next lauded play.Along with what we saw onstage, we also witnessed dozens of artists engage in our professionaldevelopment programming. The link between art and education is uniquely tied to our mission ofchampioning the importance of new play discourse within our sector and across the globe. Weare proud to empower all walks of life to be a part of this vision. As we look ahead to a dynamite season of laughter, music and togetherness, we continue to seethe Tarragon community inside the theatre grow even more. I am deeply grateful for the careand dedication of our outgoing Managing Director, Andrea Vagianos who gave us several years ofstrong stewardship during challenging times. As she begins her next journey, we are thrilled towelcome our new Executive Director, Lisa Li, who - along with our stalwart staff, board ofdirectors and supporters - will continue championing Tarragon’s immovable impact in the cityand across the country.Once again, thank you for your foundational support in what we do and we look forward tocontinuing our growth for many seasons to come.Mike Payette

Andrea VagianosOutgoing Managing Director11In Toronto’s current economy, we faced continued challenges. Like many of our colleagues, our earned and raised revenues were down, and we received a cut to our operating supportfrom the Ontario Arts Council. This decrease in revenues posed significant obstacles to ourtheatre when all costs – labour and materials, utilities and supplies – increased. But in themidst of this, we created extraordinary new work, from the many stories we supported indevelopment through commissions and workshops, to those we told in full productions on ourstages, showcasing extraordinary sets and costumes that were built in our own shops. Themagical moments we create in the theatre keep us buoyed on those darker days. Art offers usspace for hope and reflection. Our commitment to new Canadian theatre from all our communities is meaningful work thatenables us, collectively, to reflect on the many facets of today’s Canadian identity. We knowthat the artists we launch and support here at Tarragon are the cornerstone of Canada’sleading theatre artists, and we celebrate our role in providing this crucial foundation to theperforming arts community. I extend my sincere thanks to you for continuing to support us by attending performances, subscribing, donating, bringing your friends, and generally recognizing the importance of thework we do. Heartfelt thanks to our dedicated volunteer Board of Directors and to the tirelessteam at Tarragon. Finally, on a personal note, the 2023-24 season marked my final year as Managing Director. Ithas been a pleasure to be a part of this important institution collaborating with artisticdirectors Mike Payette and Richard Rose, and following past community leaders and mentors, like Urjo Kareda and Mallory Gilbert. I am delighted to welcome Lisa Li into the Tarragoncommunity as our next Executive Director to lead Tarragon into its next chapter! With deep respect and gratitude,Andrea VagianosJune 2024The 2023-24 season was an exceptional year ofcreativity and partnership at Tarragon, bringing manynew communities into our theatre. And it unfolded at anexceptionally hard time in the world, from internationalconflicts and war, to financial hardship and climate crisis.

Longtime Tarragon featuredplaywright and actor“Tarragon Theatre was my home from when I was 23 years old. Urjo Kareda took achance on a brash, unbridled, heady feminist and nurtured me, as well as so manyartists of my generation. The energy, exuberance and love that radiated from the place is back, and beinghere for it has been a dream come true. Audience members for my show Guilt (ALove Story) approached me night after night to exclaim that they’ve seen my workat the Tarragon for decades, and they appreciated being challenged to seethemselves and each other, safe but challenged, in their theatrical home, as we allgrow and transform. Tarragon’s legacy of support for writers is unmatched. Our stories reflect andinform our future, and without them, we are lost. Thank you Tarragon for being thewellspring of Canadian stories.”artist spotlight:Diane FlacksDiane Flacks is a writer/actor, dramaturge, story editor, and producer in theatre, TV, radio, and print media.
