INTRODUCTION
Takashi Kojima creates small scale sculptures that are also wearable works of art. His jewels are inspired by architecture, nature, and science.
In the POINT Series, the artist expresses his affinity for bold building designs which he emulates with his elegant, some times playful, shapes imbued with sparkling stones.
Antwerp Port House by Zaha Hadid Architects, Antwerp, Belgium
TAKASHI KOJIMA
My father was a painter and my mother was a craftsperson, and I grew up in an old town in Kyoto. During my childhood I was good at painting and building with lego blocks. Skills I developed from both of these childhood hobbies continue to inform many elements of my current work.
While in college, I studied architecture at university during the day and jewelry at night in a metal engraving class. I learned the very big design of architecture and the very small design of jewelry at the same time, so I found a way to incorporate both that suits me. Architectural analysis and approach have led to my current jewelry production.
In my work I am blurring the boundaries between fine and applied art, between superior craftsmanship and the daily handling of an object.
POINT SERIES
I have doubts about the general idea that the value of jewelry is rarity, and I create jewelry with the aim of realizing that the value of jewelry is its power of expression.
In my works, I use artificial stones and semi-precious stones and create and express techniques and designs that are unique in the history and context of jewelry.

Three stones are stacked vertically. The stones in the middle are likened to grass, trees, flowers and soil. This is an image of a garden. The top stone is an image of raindrops and frost that remain on plants. The bottom stone is an image of water filtered from the soil in the garden. I imagine seasons and various places depending on the stones I use.

PARFUM series
A perfume named N°5 went on sale in 1920. Since then, for about a hundred years, women from various time periods have worn the same fragrance. Each wearer led a different life and attached a different feeling to the very perfume. Wearing a used perfume bottle means wearing a memory of its unknown owner. While wearable perfume only exists as an invisible scent, its unwearable bottle has a visible and physical presence. Something ephemeral and something enduring. Body and memory. Perfume and its bottle are sold together under the name of perfume. In this body of work, using the form of jewellery, I attempted to visualize their roles in our consumer society as well as how a scent can relate to our feelings and memories.
Prior to the creation of "N°5," perfumes expressed concrete scents such as real flowers, but "No.5" expressed the Chanel brand and was reminiscent of urban women. It was extremely innovative in that it aimed to create an "abstract'' fragrance that evokes a sense of elegance. And while most perfume bottles at the time were flashy and luxurious, the N°5 perfume bottle was made very simply. Since then, "N°5'' has remained the best-selling perfume in history and the one with the highest advertising costs, and has always maintained a perspective and concept that was ahead of its time, and has now become a universal presence. I thought that by using a perfume bottle with this background, it would strongly and symbolically present the essence of my concept.

Personally, my memories of the smell of "N°5" include my family. My grandmother and mother both loved “N°5,” and for me, “N°5” is a truly special perfume that brings backmemories of my grandmother’s house and the gentle feeling of being wrapped in my mother’s arms. Using "N°5" in this work, which also deals with the relationship between smell and memory, was a natural move for me, and I couldn't imagine using any other perfume.

I use used perfume bottles instead of new ones. The biggest factor that appeals to me about N°5 is the fact that women of all ages and nationalities have been wearing the same scent for over 100 years. I believe that using used perfume bottles that do not reveal the age or nationality of the original user will bring out the greatest appeal of the work. For long necklaces, more than 15 perfume bottles are used. I believe that there are as many original users as there are perfume bottles that are used, and they all have memories of when they wore the perfume. When you wear it, the scent of someone you don't know lingers in the air, making it a piece of jewelry that evokes thoughts of the woman who once wore it.
I treat glass perfume bottle lid
like “precious stone” and create
necklaces, rings, and brooches.
I set the glass lid using a metal
engraving technique, and all
parts including the clasp are
made of 950 Silver and 18K
Gold. In this work, when jewelry
is placed on a perfume bottle
at home, the scent adheres to
the lid, creating a faint scent
when worn.

KOHKOH, established in 2023 by Takashi Kojima, is a brand that creates jewelry symbolizing the modern era by leveraging innovative technology and creativity. Focusing on self-cultivated pearls as a primary material, the brand actively incorporates new perspectives and techniques. While the mother-of-pearls, typically discarded after extracting pearls, are usually considered waste, we find charm in them and repurpose them.
Our jewelry not only emphasizes beauty but also sustainability. Through our unique technology and design, we strive to create environmentally conscious yet captivating jewelry. We aim to harmonize with nature and leave a beautiful Earth for future generations.
The brand concept revolves around constantly challenging the application of new technologies and materials through jewelry expression, contemplating what we can propose to society. We possess a patented technology for three-dimensional pearl cultivation. Using our patented technology, combined with cutting, casting, and digital techniques, we create innovative and sophisticated jewellery designs from the pearls and pearl oysters we cultivate.

The inspiration for the brand name, "KOHKOH" comes from the sparkling nature of pearls. Pearls, with thein radiant beauty, carry a noble image. Additionally, the brand slogan, Contemplating Light, emphasizes our continuous exploration of new technologies and materials through jewelry expression, proposing ideas to society. The brand name also encompasses the meaning of "Contemplating Light" as we ponder over what light represents.

In 2021, we succeeded in patenting a technology to form beautiful pearl layers around resin-hardened characters and shapes. Using this patented technology, we propose innovative and elegant pearl jewelry by combining pearls with gemstones.
Simultaneously, we focused on the pearl oysters usually discarded, seeking ways to utilize them. We decided to fashion the pearl oysters, carefully adjusting each one, and successfully created a unique form of cameo through a combination of manual and digital processing.

In the apparel industry, animal breeding for luxury items such as fur and leather is generally considered taboo. Our involvement in pearl cultivation led to a conflict of sacrificing lives for design. Confronting this conflict, we decided to design and turn the pearl oysters, including those usually discarded, into jewellery, avoiding waste.
