Abbey Sellers 11 Reflects on Life changing Trip Finding Purpose on Mission to Cambodia S itting in front of me was a woman approximately 34 years old with her two daughters ages 7 and 10 They didn t say much From first impression it appeared they were in good health a big change from the usual patient we saw I thought to myself They are simply getting a checkup to make sure everything is fine As we questioned the mother further we learned that she and her children were HIV positive While carrying her 10 year old daughter the mother was not on any medication so HIV was transmitted to the child during birth The youngest daughter was receiving indirect medication from her mother in the womb but unfortunately the medication did not prevent her from being infected The mother told us that her older daughter also was blind in her left eye We examined her and found she had glaucoma The youngest daughter appeared to be healthy but we soon discovered she had three heart murmurs and could be expected to live for no more than a couple of years All I could think about was how could such a beautiful woman and children so innocent be dealt such unfortunate fates Throughout the entire trip it seemed I asked myself this question more than I breathed After seeing 1 651 patients I had many more questions My experience on the mission trip to Cambodia affected my life in such a profound way that I honestly have no words to describe it From the children wearing nothing but a shirt and constantly smiling because they knew that you were helping them to the elderly men and women reaching out to hold your hand as a silent thank you the people touched me in a profound way I can say now with confidence that I know what I want to do with my life and I know why He put me on this earth to help others If it were not for this summer and the trip to Cambodia I would still have questions about my purpose and my goals in life but now I am counting down the days until I can go back there again as a doctor instead of a student I thought I would help and change the people of Cambodia but it was Cambodia that changed me We did make a difference by laughing crying and hurting with them but the real difference came in the form of love We showed the people we met that we truly cared for them and in turn they truly cared for us For that I am forever grateful and I will always hold a special place in my heart for the people of Cambodia Abbey Sellers is a student at Mercer University She was one of three undergraduates chosen for a three week mission trip to Cambodia undertaken by Mercer s medical school WOODWARD EDU FALL 2013 27
