DEAR FRIENDS,Welcome to Summermusik Under the Stars 2021! We are overjoyed to welcome you back to a Summermusik season that will hopefully do what we do best: entertain, enlighten, give strength and soothe your soul through music. We are excited to see everyone in-person, to play in a naturally beautiful setting and to perform music in its ideal form: live!We all have deeply felt the loss of live music during the past year and have realized how important listening, performing and gathering together is for our well-being. We are so happy to be back! This year’s Summermusik will look and feel a bit different: all of our performances will be outdoors and follow all necessary social distancing guidelines and mandates. During our somewhat shortened season we continue to present music in three contrasting formats: the Mainstage series will feature repertoire for chamber orchestra at Seasongood Pavilion in beautiful Eden Park. In our casual Sunday afternoon series, A Little Afternoon Musik, we will present chamber music at Moonlite Pavilion at Coney Island, and our musician-curated Chamber Crawl series will bring musical fun to three different outstanding venues around Cincinnati. Each series has its own mixture of themes and fun, so please make sure to come to all of them! Our first Mainstage program Mindful Musik is dedicated to the impact of the pandemic on families and society as a whole. Many of us have experienced social isolation over the past year. As society grapples with a looming mental health crisis we explore what role music can play in dealing with anxiety, loss and emotional recovery, helping to uplift people’s spirits and promote well-being. Each of our three composers had different emotional challenges: George Walker, the first African American composer to win the Pulitzer Prize, wrote his grieving Lyric for Strings as a remembrance of his grandmother who had managed to escape slavery, composing a very powerful and personal work. Ludwig van Beethoven battled with mental health issues himself and composed his fourth symphony in an effort to find solace in a work filled with hope and humor. Young cello virtuoso Sujari Britt will join the CCO in Tchaikovsky’s Variations on a Rococo Theme, a lighthearted work that shows how Tchaikovsky escaped depression through music – including lots of fireworks for the soloist. For our second Mainstage program we will begin a journey of musical rediscovery that will continue in the years to come. Once limited by the social conventions of their time, we will allow the voices of Women in Musik to be heard. Hear the new, fresh and highly personal voices of three young female composers from different cultural backgrounds: African American composer Jessie Montgomery, Indian-American composer Reena Esmail and Gabriella Smith. Jessie Montgomery’s Starburst creates a dazzling opening work displaying the virtuosity of our string players. Reena Esmail merges the Western and Hindustani musical traditions into a mesmerizing soundscape in her work Teen Murti. Californian composer Gabriella Smith composed her Brandenburg Interstices as an homage to Bach’s Brandenburg Concerto No. 5, quoting from each concerto movement. All three composers create a fascinating synthesis of different styles and cultures. Their music is a celebration of humanity. As one representative of the many young female virtuosos over the centuries, we will feature Grammy nominee Caroline Goulding on Mozart’s fifth violin concerto. Inspired in part by the sounds of Turkish Janissary bands, Mozart created in the last movement his own version of musical synthesis – and a brilliant close to the Summermusik Festival. We look forward to coming back together to make music with all of you as we celebrate perseverance and humanity in the best way: with music, under the stars!ECKART PREU3 DIFFERENT CONCERT EXPERIENCESMUSIC DIRECTOR SPONSORS2 | SUMMERMUSIK FESTIVAL 2021Photo Credit: ManMan StudiosASSISTANT CONDUCTOR SPONSORS

SUMMERMUSIK FESTIVAL 2021 | 7WHAT IS THE PLAN FOR SEATING FOR 2021? • Individual tickets for all shows will be seated in socially distanced seating pods. • Mainstage events at Eden Park’s Seasongood Pavilion offer two seating options: limited bench seating on the terraces and turf sections near the stage and pod seating on the lawn behind. Guests with lawn tickets are encouraged to bring lawn chairs and blankets. Pods will be assigned by our Box Office. • For Chamber Crawl and A Little Afternoon Musik events, seating will be provided either on folding chairs or on benches at the Cincinnati Zoo’s Wings of Wonder Amphitheater, and all seating groups will be socially distanced.WHAT MEASURES WILL BE IN PLACE THIS SEASON TO ENSURE EVERYONE REMAINS SAFE AT SUMMERMUSIK EVENTS?The safety of everyone at CCO events has been central to the organization’s planning process. We will continue to follow all CDC guidelines as well as local, state and federal restrictions and mandates to ensure everyone has a wonderful concert experience. These are just a few safety measures we have implemented for Summermusik this August: • All events will be held outdoors to ensure maximum ventilation and air flow. • Ticketing capacity at all festival events will be limited to allow for social distancing. • All seating pods will be appropriately distanced from other seating pods. • Guests will be required to wear face masks at all times except when actively eating or drinking. We will monitor changes in guidelines closely and continue to make decisions that prioritize everyone's safety. • While our Chamber Series events have always been shorter in duration, the length of each Mainstage performance has been shortened and all intermissions have been eliminated to reduce audience congregating. • We are eliminating as many touchpoints as possible by reducing the use of paper, moving to digital program books and continuing to use scanners to check in guests instead of physically touching tickets. • We have created signage to encourage adequate distancing and traffic flow as our guests move throughout our venues. • In addition to all of these measures, we are also implementing rigorous COVID protocols on-stage to keep all of our artists and musicians safe.

Throughout musical history many composers battled through isolation, anxiety and depression to compose some of their most beloved works. To open the season, the orchestra will perform the deeply emotional Lyric for Strings by George Walker, the first Black composer to win the Pulitzer Prize for Music. At a time when his mental state was fragile, Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky battled through his depression by composing the sunny and lighthearted Variations on a Rococo Theme. Performing on the piece is cello prodigy Sujari Britt, a Manhattan School of Music graduate who has performed for both President Obama and on the National Public Radio program From the Top! Ludwig van Beethoven’s fourth symphony was written in the midst of his despair about his impending hearing loss, helping him find solace in music. As our world struggles with our own mental health crisis, this program will explore the healing quality of music as we come together to enjoy live music once again. For centuries women were encouraged to musically entertain and compose in private, but a public career in performing or composition was frowned upon. From works by Reena Esmail and Jennifer Jolley, to a newly rediscovered work by Lilian Elkington, this concert will shed light on their talent as writers and musicians. CCO principals flutist Rebecca Andres, trumpeter Ashley Hall, violinists Celeste Golden Boyer and Sujean Kim, and Heidi Yenney on viola d'amore will be featured on a range of worksthat celebrate both female writers and musicians.HER VOICESUNDAY, AUGUST 15 | 4:00PMCONEY ISLAND'SMOONLITE PAVILIONApproximately 1 hour and 10 minutesELENA KATS-CHERNINFROM From Anna Magdalena’s Notebook: 1. Opening the program will be a work by violinist and composer Jessie Montgomery, Starburst, which describes a changing galaxy where stars are born at an incredibly fast rate. 2019 United States Artist Fellow in Music, composer Reena Esmail’s Teen Murti conjures a fascinating and unfamiliar sound world based on Indian classical music traditions. Gabriella Smith’s Brandenburg Interstices brings Bach’s fifth concerto into the 21st century. “Preciously gifted” (Gramophone) Grammy-nominated violinist Caroline Goulding will round out Summermusik with Mozart’s “Turkish” fifth violin concerto, one of the few examples where he brings together different cultures in a work. “CCO has come alive with Eckart Preu’s leadership. Love the new direction and the energy and enthusiasm shown by the music and the musicians.”“Fantastic concerts! My favorite orchestra!”“This is the highlight of my year.”“This series has been beautiful beyond words… so much more than just a fi ne concert.” “Unafraid to take risks, the 32-piece Chamber Orchestra – including its hands-on board – has invented one of the most creative and innovative classical music experiencesin the region.” - Janelle Gelfand, Cincinnati Business Courier“But Eckart Preu kept things ebbing and flowing with his genial but firm command of his forces. The young maestro moves comfortably from the film music of Nyman and the New Age sounds of Enaudi to the atonalism of Zivkovic and on to the Baroque elegance of Vivaldi, Torelli and Handel. That alone qualifies him in most books and certainly in mine as a conductor to take notice of. Cincinnati has noticed and embraced him.” - Rafael de Acha, All About the Arts“If only streaming music could recreate a live performance of Pepe and the Cincinnati Chamber Orchestra.
