rounding with rickRick Scott, CFRE President, Presbyterian Healthcare FoundationOur friends and colleagues at Lincoln County Medical Center in Ruidoso have been devastated by wildfires and flooding this summer. Presbtyerian and other funding sources are assisting providers and staff. The Foundation's Employee CareFund is poised to fill any gaps for basic necessities and additional paid time off. If you wish to contribute, go to www.phs.org/give and select Employee CareFund from the drop-down menu.Presbyterian Healthcare Foundation is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. When you give, 100% of your gi is directed toward improving the health and lives of New Mexicans. No portion of your gi supports fundraising or administrative expenses.Supporting our Workforce:A Win-WinA compassionate, well-trained workforce is among the best gis we can give to our patients. Professional development is important to our employees and the care they deliver. We are determined to support innovative, convenient and effective learning experiences, so employees can expand their skills and grow their careers here in NewMexico. We are taking steps to nurture our future workforce and prioritize the well-being of our current providers and staff. Both are necessary to improve healthcare access in ourstate. As you’ll read on p. 8, the new Presbyterian Healthcare Advanced Learning Lab (HALL), a cutting-edge simulation center that will provide experiential learning environment for clinicians and others in our community, is part of that effort. Thanks to the generosity of our donors, we were able to give Presbyterian $3.2 million to start thefacility. But we have more to do. We continue to fundraise, so that we can fund PN (practical nurse) and BSN degree programs for employees who want to pursue nursing careers. Over time, new nurses, as well as employees in other clinical and ancillary roles, will receive onboarding and orientation at theHALL. Thanks to the generosity of donors like you, we can continue to provide our workforce with opportunities for education and exploration. It’s a win-win, for our people, our community, and most importantly, our patients.Assisting Our Teams in RuidosoTeresa HartnettTeresa Hartnett2 Giving | Presbyterian Healthcare Foundation

PresbyterianHealthcare Foundation Board Memberwho’s on boardTeresa joined the Foundation board in 2022 after working as a business administrator for accounting firms including KPMG, Grant Thornton and REDW. She began volunteering for Daffodil Days in 1995, not long after her father passed away after just a few hours in hospice. Because the event takes place in March and overlaps with tax season, her capacity to volunteer was limited to presales, but retirement has changed all that. “I love flowers, and Daffodil Days is a good cause,” Teresa says. Volunteering for the event became even more personal in 2012, when Teresa’s mother was in hospice. She developed a deep appreciation for the hospice nurses and is grateful to see the ways hospice care has improved in the lastdecade.“The experience was wonderful because my mother was in excruciating pain, and they knew what do to do keep her comfortable. I have had such positive experiences with hospice nurses. Their knowledge is truly a calling. When you are stressing about your loved one being in pain, they know exactly what to do,” Teresasays.Getting the word outA New Mexico native and former Presbyterian Hospital candy striper during high school, Teresa has always been aware of Presbyterian’s presence in the community, but until she joined the board, had no idea how extensively the Foundation supports healthcare advancements that benefit thecommunity. As part of her commitment to give back to the community through her board service, Teresa prioritizes getting the message out about the many things Presbyterian does. “I would like to help educate the public about all the things Presbyterian does, from the Robert Wertheim Hospice House to Community Health programs like the Food Farmacy, nursing scholarships and education, to well-being programs for physicians. It’s amazing,” she says.Teresa HartnettTeresa HartnettFor an avid gardener and former business operations professional like Teresa Hartne, chairing Presbyterian Healthcare Foundation’s annual Daffodil Days event is a perfect fit. Since 2022, Teresa has chaired the annual spring fundraiser for the Presbyterian Robert Wertheim Hospice House, which raised a record-breaking $233,000 this year. “Teresa has been integral to the success of Daffodil Days in recent years. She has not only contributed to our fundraising, but also worked with our volunteers to assemble the flowers. She is a doer in all respects and we really appreciate it.”– Rick Scott Thank you and congratulations to newly named emeritus board member Andrea Hanson. To honor their work and express gratitude for the care they provide, Presbyterian teams and sites throughout the state celebrated National Doctors’ Day from March 29 through April 5. On the first Doctors’ Day in 1933, founder Eudora Brown Almond asked her community to send greeting cards to their physicians. More than 90 years later, Presbyterian employees show their appreciation in a variety of ways, from thanking them in person, to providing food, to sending emails andcards. Many patients expressed their gratitude this year too, by taking part in Presbyterian Healthcare Foundation’s Doctors’ Day Guardian Angel campaign. Patients donated more than $8,500 in honor of more than 80 clinicians.Make Someone’s Day Guardian Angel gifts recognize the exceptional care of physicians, nurses and other staff while benefiting their departments with funds for new programs and equipment. Imagine you had an emergency health situation, or your doctor told you that you needed inpatient surgery, but you had no one to care for your pet while you were in the hospital. You would probably feel anxious about finding someone to take care of your pet, or worse, simply refuse to schedule the recommended procedure because you didn’t have a solution.Mary Cathren Harris and her husband, Tom Barger, have given these scenarios a lot of thought, and decided to take action. As lifelong dog lovers – they have had several standard poodles throughout their life together – they are passionate about recognizing and protecting the bond between people and their pets. They have generously given retirement plan assets to Presbyterian Healthcare Foundation to create the Companion Animal Care Fund.Harris Barger Gift Establishes Companion Animal Care Fundplanned givingFor the Love ofPeople and Their PetsMary Cathren and Tom’s current dog, Chaco6 Giving | Presbyterian Healthcare Foundation

The fund is designed to take stress off patients by providing pet care while they receive medical care. As Mary Cathren points out, even people with the financial resources to pay for pet care often don’t have the logistics in place to make sure their pets are cared for when they are in the hospital. It can be incredibly stressful for patients, compounded by concerns about their own health. The Companion Animal Care Fund came to fruition because Mary Cathren and Tom’s dogs have always been a big part of their lives, and they have encountered many people who feel the same. The couple also supports Meals on Wheels, and helped start the Meals on Wheels Pet Pal program, which delivers monthly dog food and treats to home-bound people when they receive their meals. The program has recently expanded to include grooming, dog walking and mobile vet care. “It’s easier than you think to help. We don’t think of the Companion Animal Care Fund as ‘our program.’ The more support that goes into it, the more people will benefit. We hope that people who take advantage of the program would consider donating back, not necessarily with money but maybe as avolunteer.” “For some people, their pets are almost all they have. If there’s some way to make sure somebody doesn’t have to give up their animal because of a temporary health situation, hopefully this fund can bridge that gap,” says Mary Cathren.Their PetsPlease remember Presbyterian Healthcare Foundation in your will and estate planning. Puing Philanthropy to Workfor the Workforcecover storyIt’s no secret that New Mexico is facing a serious shortage of healthcare professionals at every level. According to the New Mexico Department of Workforce Solutions, as of May 2023, there were nearly 7,000 unfilled positions for registered nurses, critical care nurses and acute care nurses. As a state, we need to do more to train and retain healthcare workers so they can provide the care our population needs. Presbyterian Healthcare Services, with the help of Presbyterian Healthcare Foundation (PHF), is taking bold steps to be part of thesolution.8 Giving | Presbyterian Healthcare Foundation

The new Presbyterian Healthcare Advanced Learning Lab (HALL) is an innovative learning environment where the next generation of healthcare workers in New Mexico can enhance their current skills and learn new ones. By providing a safe, realistic learning environment where participants can receive hands-on simulation education and training in an advanced technology setting, the HALL is designed create a strong, consistent pipeline of healthcare workers who will care for generations of New Mexicans. Planning for the HALL began in 2017, when Presbyterian began rethinking how to help our clinical teams advance their careers while expanding training opportunities to other healthcare professionals in the community. The following year, in support of those efforts and in honor of its 50th anniversary, PHF made a $3.2 million gift to Presbyterian to start the facility. Proceeds from the 2023 Laughter is the Best Medicine event helped fund additional technology. A place for education and explorationWhen fully operational, HALL users will include current Presbyterian employees and new hires, healthcare professionals from organizations around New Mexico, as well as students from middle school through college who are interested in exploring careers in healthcare. Current employees enrolled in Presbyterian Nursing Career Pathways to earn their PN (practical nurse) and BSN degrees will also use the HALL as their centralized classroom and training space. Existing simulation and training opportunities for Presbyterian employees are currently spread among four facilities in Albuquerque. The HALL makes training more efficient and convenient for employees by centralizing these services in one place.“Unlike other simulation facilities in the state, the HALL is not affiliated with an academic institution and will be open to healthcare professionals and students across New Mexico. The vision for the HALL is to be a safe environment where first responders, healthcare professionals, students and those interested in healthcare can explore, learn, and grow professionally."Zach Fierro, Director of Clinical Education, Presbyterian Delivery System

corporate donor profile “My parents were always big patrons of the arts and supported Albuquerque’s many cultural and historical attributes. My siblings and I have big shoes to fill in that regard, but it’s one of the pillars of our business so we try to do as much as we can on a daily basis,” says Carlos Garcia, Presbyterian Healthcare Foundation (PHF) board member, who runs the third generation of the family business with his brother, Ed.PHF is one of the beneficiaries of that generosity. For the past six years, Garcia Automotive has sponsored the Foundation’s annual Daffodil Days event, which raises funds for the Presbyterian Robert Wertheim Hospice House. This year’s event raised a record-breaking $233,000.Sheilah Garcia (seated) with her children Ed, Pilar, Carlos and TobyA Legacy ofGenerosityFew family businesses in Albuquerque can trace their roots back to the days before I-40 existed, but the Garcia family, owners of Garcia Automotive Group, is an exception. From those humble beginnings as a junk and salvage business for truck parts in the 1930s, the company has grown to include more than ten automotive dealerships in Albuquerque, Santa Fe and El Paso, Texas. Along the way, the Garcia family has actively supported the Albuquerque community.Garcia Automotive Group10 Giving | Presbyterian Healthcare Foundation

Tangible resultsCarlos credits his mother, Sheilah, for the Daffodil Days partnership, which began when she wanted to help support her friend, Michael Freccia, in his previous role as a PHF board member (now emeritus board member). In addition to providing financial support and publicity for the event, the Garcia family allows the Foundation to use its facilities to stage all the daffodils in preparation for sale. “In a place like Albuquerque, everybody really has to work together because we don’t have a lot of the resources that other big cities have. We believe in the mission of the Foundation, and you can see tangible results in the community, especially with the Robert Wertheim Hospice House. That was really an exceptional project,” Carlos says.PHF President Rick Scott attributes much of the event's success to the Foundation's corporate partnership with Garcia Automotive Group. "Their generous sponsorship support and warehouse space have been integral to the success of Daffodil Days. Sheilah, Ed and Carlos Garcia are kind, community-minded people. I’m honored that they’ve chosen to support us in such a big way. New Mexico is better because of them,” says Rick.“We like to partner with people who want to make a difference in our community and want to do so for the right reasons. We support those who make people’s daily lives beer in Albuquerque and New Mexico, not just in healthcare, but also in the arts, music, children's programs, education and historicpreservation.” – Carlos GarciaSummer 2024 11
