COMMUNITY ARTICLE Water You Waiting For The Snake River winds its way through Southern Idaho bringing recreation irrigation hydroelectric power and natural beauty to our communities The river also provides shelter food and habitats for many plants and animals Throughout the Mini Cassia area the river is easily accessible to families and provides opportunities to play learn and work Summer is a fun time to introduce your kids to fishing birdwatching and bug catching Free fishing day is just around the corner on June 14 and it s a great way to fish our lakes and ponds without the need for a fishing license But remember to grab licenses for all your anglers over the age of 13 for the rest of the summer we set important examples when we follow the rules of our friendly Fish and Game officers We have several areas in the Magic Valley that are considered hot spots for bird watching Lake Walcott is next to the Minidoka National Wildlife Refuge and 208 678 1011 hundreds of bird species have been counted in that area The Snake River is also part of the Pacific Flyway for migrating birds so as summer days shorten into fall we can watch the skies for flocks of game birds For small children one of my favorite activities is called the Teeny Tiny Scavenger Hunt Hand them a small cup or container and give them simple picture guides of natural items to find Sometimes the cups contain an ant or beetle but most of the time your littles will find petals and pebbles and pine cones to share Make the most of summer days by exploring our rivers lakes and mountain streams You will make waves of memories Amy Christopherson Director CSI Mini Cassia Center and Idaho Science Mom xxx 1 8 Page Horizontal southernidahokids minicassia Summer 2025 13
